Yes: many smart TVs can still show antenna or cable channels and play content from HDMI devices without internet. Streaming apps and most connected features will not work offline, and whether you can skip internet during setup depends on the TV’s brand, model, and software. Check the support page for your exact TV before declining setup or disconnecting it.
What can you watch on a smart TV without internet?
The most reliable offline options are live television received through the TV’s tuner and content from devices connected to its inputs. Depending on the TV, that can include an antenna, cable or satellite box, game console, disc player, or another HDMI source. Roku lists antenna or cable TV and HDMI devices as usable in unlinked mode; TCL identifies cable, satellite, a TV tuner, antenna, and external inputs as sources for Basic TV Mode (Roku: How do I use my TV in unlinked mode?; TCL: Basic TV setup on a Google TV).
Built-in streaming services need an internet connection. A separate streaming device can still run apps if it is online, but that means the device—not the TV—is providing internet-connected streaming.

There is no universal offline setup procedure. Some televisions offer a basic or unlinked mode; others require internet to finish activation. Even where an offline option exists, its name and availability may vary by model or software version. Consult the manufacturer’s current instructions for your exact TV rather than assuming another model’s setup steps apply. RTINGS also notes that menus vary across models and firmware in its cross-platform smart TV offline guide.

TCL Google TV: Basic TV Mode
TCL says Google TVs offer Basic TV Mode during setup without an internet connection or Google account. In this mode, you can use supported live-TV sources and external inputs. You do not get Google account sign-in, the Google Play library or app installation, Google Assistant search and control, or phone and tablet casting. TCL also says software and security updates are unavailable without internet. See TCL’s current Basic TV Mode instructions for your model.
Roku TVs: setup rules differ
Some Roku TV systems offer “Connect to the Internet Later” and permit unlinked use, but Roku says that option is not available on every system. In unlinked mode, antenna or cable television and HDMI sources can remain usable, while Roku streaming services are unavailable. Roku separately says that Roku-branded TVs require internet to complete initial setup; after setup, they can be disconnected and used for antenna or HDMI playback. These distinctions are documented in Roku’s unlinked-mode instructions and Getting to know your Roku TV, which Roku says was updated August 18, 2026.

Other brands and platforms
LG webOS, Samsung Tizen, Google TV, Roku, Vizio, and Amazon Fire TV have different setup flows. A general walkthrough can help you recognize the kind of option to look for, but manufacturer documentation is the better guide for the exact model and current firmware.

What stops working when the TV is offline?
Without internet, expect streaming apps and other online-dependent services to stop working. Depending on the platform and setup mode, you may also lose app downloads, voice search, casting, account-linked features, or other smart functions. The offline mode is a way to keep using television inputs; it is not a way to use built-in streaming services without a connection.

There is an update trade-off, too. TCL explicitly says Basic TV Mode does not receive software or security updates without internet. The available instructions do not establish the same update behavior for every brand, so check your manufacturer’s guidance if updates matter to your decision.
What does going offline mean for TV privacy?
If a TV has no internet route, it cannot send data to its manufacturer over that route while disconnected. That does not mean going offline erases information the TV may already have stored, or that reconnection will have no consequences; those details depend on the device and its settings.

Roku documents viewing-data collection through its Smart TV Experience, including automatic content recognition (ACR) from antenna and connected inputs when the feature is enabled. It also describes data collection associated with streaming-channel use. See Roku’s Smart TV Experience explanation for the platform’s description. If you connect a streaming box or stick, that device is another internet-connected platform with its own privacy settings and data practices.

- Check the exact model’s setup instructions. Use the TV maker’s support page to find out whether internet is optional during setup and what the offline mode supports. Menu names and availability can differ across models and firmware.
- Choose a working source. Connect an antenna, cable or satellite box, console, disc player, or other source to the appropriate input. Use the TV’s input or source control to select it.
- Plan for antenna reception if needed. If you want over-the-air local channels, check tuner compatibility and local reception conditions before choosing an indoor or outdoor antenna. A channel lineup or reliable reception cannot be guaranteed by the TV alone.
- Decide whether to keep the TV disconnected. An external streaming device can preserve access to apps while the TV itself stays offline, but the streaming device still needs internet. Review that device’s privacy controls separately.
- Consider updates and settings before disconnecting. Check whether your TV’s offline mode affects updates or account features, and review any privacy controls available in its connected settings.
Offline mode is not the same as a complete home-network outage
A TV’s offline or unlinked mode should not be confused with an outage mode for a separate TV product. For example, Tablo says its fourth-generation device’s outage mode still requires power and a working local Wi-Fi network for network-connected app access. It restores some antenna viewing and playback of completed recordings, while certain functions remain unavailable. Details are in Tablo’s outage-mode instructions and its internet requirements.
