The player controls on TipoffWatch, GenreWatch, and WatchNews opened streams in certain apps or downloaded a playlist, but they did not give users the stream address itself. Adding a Copy URL action filled that gap—while making access to the address follow the same ownership rules as access to the stream.
Why app buttons and playlist downloads left a gap
In chovy’s account of the change, the three sites let visitors play channels inline and offered controls for VLC, Infuse, and an .m3u download. The VLC and Infuse controls used app URL schemes—vlc-x-callback:// and infuse://—that the author says are registered by iOS and Android apps. On desktop, those schemes did not provide a usable playback route, so the sites hid those controls.
The download had a different limitation: the author says that on iOS Safari it could save the playlist or a .ts transport-stream file instead of playing it, so the sites hid that option on phones. Those are the author’s explanations for the behavior on these sites, not a claim about every current browser, device, or stream.
Each option was useful in the context it supported, but users lacked a direct address to take elsewhere. A stream URL could be used with destinations beyond the named app integrations; chovy lists mpv, ffmpeg, a set-top box, another VLC machine, and a Plex box as examples. The core interface problem was portability: the buttons knew where a stream might open, but did not offer the underlying address.

Where the Copy URL action appeared
Chovy reports adding a Copy URL control in four contexts, so users could reach the address from different points in the viewing flow:
- Beside the player controls in a channel row.
- Below the inline player after playback starts.
- On each multiview tile.
- Under the house player on a WatchNews channel page.
The WatchNews channel page exposed a public HLS playlist that the author says does not require a session. That differs from a user’s own subscription stream, where the address may carry credentials.

Why a stream URL needs access controls
“The address is the credential,” chovy writes. On a user’s own line, the stream URL includes that provider’s username and password. Because an external player does not share the website’s session, the site passes the address to it. Copying the URL therefore is not merely a convenience action: it can reveal subscription access information.

Managed-line channels use the site’s reseller credential, while channels from another user’s shared list use that user’s subscription. How multiview avoids putting addresses in the grid
Multiview tiles need to be reloadable and bookmarkable, and the author wanted them to open in a picture-in-picture window without embedding subscription addresses in the page markup. The grid therefore stores row IDs rather than stream URLs.
When a user presses a tile, the page requests the address from a route that chovy says responds only for the session that owns the row. The response uses no-store and private directives. This makes the URL available on an intentional action rather than placing it directly in the bookmarkable grid.

The event handler is delegated at the document level, according to the author, so tiles added after the initial page load can use it without individual button wiring. The grid component itself does not need to know about the Copy URL button.

What happens when the clipboard is unavailable
A browser may make navigator.clipboard unavailable outside a secure context or refuse a clipboard request. Chovy’s fallback places the URL in a selected text field so the user can copy it manually. That gives the action a recovery path instead of failing silently. The account does not provide browser-by-browser compatibility results.

The broader interface lesson
A device-aware player button can still leave users without the thing they need: the address that connects a stream to another player. Offering that address supports destinations a site does not explicitly integrate, but it also changes what information the interface exposes. A sound design makes the action explicit, applies the same ownership boundary as playback, and keeps credential-bearing URLs out of persistent or bookmarkable markup where they are not needed.
