Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A code comment that sends a maintainer to a ticket, wiki, chat thread, or diagram may stop explaining anything when that service is replaced or shut down. The practical fix is simple: keep the reason for consequential code in the repository, and treat external links as optional supporting detail—not the only record.
Why links in code can lose their meaning
In his September 30, 2025 essay, Serguey Asael Shinder describes a familiar maintenance trap: a comment points to a ticket system that has since been replaced, and the closed tickets did not survive the migration. In other examples, a wiki is switched off or a company stops paying for the chat service that held the decision thread. The code remains, but the explanation it depended on is no longer available.
These are the author’s illustrative scenarios, not measured evidence about how frequently tools are retired. The useful point is narrower: a link can lead to valuable context now without preserving that context for as long as the code is used. Shinder puts it this way: “Code lasts longer than the tools around it.”
What to preserve beside consequential code
When a behavior is surprising or protects against a specific failure, record enough context locally that a future maintainer can understand it without opening another service. A short comment, a commit message, or a decision file in the repository can do that. Include three things:

#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
- What happened: the incident, constraint, or decision that led to the behavior.
- What the code protects against: the failure or consequence the behavior is intended to prevent.
- What would make removal safe: the condition, changed assumption, or verification needed before deleting it.
For example, rather than leaving only “See ticket #482,” a comment could say: “Keep this retry because the upstream service can return a temporary empty response during deployment. Removing it is safe once the service guarantees a complete response during rollout.” Add a ticket link if it offers further detail, but make the local explanation useful when that link fails.
Choose a repository format that fits the information
There is no single best place for every explanation. Use the format that makes the reason easiest to find and maintain in your repository’s workflow.
Rank #2
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
- Code comment: Put a concise explanation close to the condition or workaround it describes, especially when separating the rationale from the code would make it easy to miss.
- Commit message: Record why a change was made alongside its history. This can preserve decision context without adding lengthy commentary to the source.
- Decision file: Use a repository document when the reasoning applies across several files or needs more explanation than a useful inline comment can hold.
- Text version of a diagram: Keep an accessible description of important flows or relationships near the code. The diagram can remain linked, but its meaning should not depend on being able to open the original editor.
These are practical options, not a tested ranking. Whatever the format, keep the explanation specific enough to guide a later maintainer rather than merely naming the old ticket or tool.
Make external links supporting evidence
An external link can still be helpful: it may lead to a detailed incident record, discussion, or visual diagram. The risk is relying on it as the sole explanation. Shinder’s phrase is apt: “A link on its own is a bet.” Keep the link for readers who can access it, but place the essential rationale in the repository so that the code remains understandable if the destination disappears.

Check references before retiring a tool
When your organization plans to replace a ticketing, wiki, chat, or diagram service, look for code references to it while the old system is still accessible. Retrieve the information those references depend on and preserve the relevant reasoning near the affected code. A link search is most useful when followed by a context check: distinguish references that merely offer extra background from those that contain the only record of why a behavior exists.
That makes tool retirement a documentation task as well as a migration task. Preserve the knowledge needed to maintain the code, not necessarily every old discussion or page.

A practical standard for maintainers
For any consequential condition, workaround, or non-obvious behavior, ask whether a future maintainer could understand its purpose if every linked service were inaccessible. If not, add a brief local explanation of what happened, what the code prevents, and what evidence would justify changing it. Keep external references as extra context, and keep important diagram meaning in text beside the code.
