When an automated rental-reply tool sees a monthly price, the number alone may not tell it whether the page is a listing or a subscription checkout. Daniel Pertu’s proposed safeguard combines stronger page-structure clues—such as payment scripts and card fields—with a narrow text heuristic: treat one- or two-digit monthly prices as possible subscription charges. That is a cautious design proposal, not a proven way to classify every rental market or currency.
Why confusing rent with a paywall matters
Pertu describes Notifio as a service that watches rental search pages and offers automated form filling as an upgrade. In that setting, the automation may encounter pages that ask a user to pay, sign in, register, or complete a checkout flow instead of presenting a replyable listing.
The author frames the decision as asymmetric: skipping a legitimate listing can cost an opportunity, but entering a payment flow could trigger an unwanted payment attempt or subscription. The proposed guard is therefore deliberately cautious and deterministic. A refusal should also say why the page was skipped, rather than silently failing.
This is Pertu’s rationale, not a measured comparison of the costs or outcomes. The article reports no accuracy study or false-positive and false-negative rates.

Prefer checkout structure to ambiguous words
The proposal looks for technical evidence that a page is handling payment. Examples include scripts associated with payment providers and markup associated with card-number fields or payment widgets. Pertu’s examples include Stripe, Mollie, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, and Klarna. This is an illustrative list, not an exhaustive inventory of providers.
HTTP status 402 is another independent hard stop in the described implementation. It signals a payment-related response rather than an ordinary page to proceed through.

- Up-to-date, customizable agreement that lays out rental terms and conditions
- State Required Landlord Disclosures, State Laws on Landlord"s Access to Rental Property

These structural clues are more useful than a word such as “ideal.” That word may occur in ordinary rental copy, and Idealista is also a listing-site name. A keyword match alone can therefore mistake routine listing text for a payment request.
Use the price pattern as a narrow fallback
When a page does not expose clear payment structure, the author proposes combining monthly wording with an amount of one or two digits. The described pattern recognizes monthly expressions in several European languages, with examples such as “per month,” “per maand,” and “pro Monat.” The point is not that every one- or two-digit price is a subscription; it is that such a price can be a reason to stop and inspect rather than submit a reply automatically.

Pertu’s explanation contrasts a small monthly access charge such as €9.99 with a rent such as €1,450. The two-digit cutoff is his heuristic. He argues that rents below €100 per month and listing-site access prices in the hundreds fall outside the cases he expects, but the article supplies no independent market data to establish those assumptions. They should not be generalized to all countries, currencies, room types, temporary or subsidized housing, or unusual arrangements.
How the signal types compare
| Signal family | Examples described by Pertu | How to use it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural payment indicators | Payment-provider scripts, card-field or payment-widget attributes, and HTTP 402 responses | Prefer these when available; refuse or halt before interacting with a payment flow. | The listed providers and markup examples are not stated to be complete. |
| Textual access indicators | Subscription-required or premium-members-only wording; prompts to upgrade before responding | Use as evidence that access may be gated, especially when technical indicators are absent. | Ordinary page language can be ambiguous or vary by language. |
| Monthly-price heuristic | One- or two-digit amount paired with monthly wording | Treat as a cautious trigger for refusal or further review, not conclusive proof of a paywall. | The cutoff reflects the author’s assumption, not validated cross-market rent data. |
Make refusals explainable
The article describes specific refusal statuses so the automation can report the kind of obstacle it encountered. They include payment, CAPTCHA, login, signup, paywall, offsite, and not-listing. Distinguishing these cases is more informative than returning a generic failure: a CAPTCHA or login requirement is not the same thing as a checkout page, even if both mean the automated reply should stop.

Pertu’s article is a design argument for avoiding accidental interaction with payment and account flows. It does not provide representative rent distributions, measured classifier performance, or evidence that the two-digit threshold works across European rental markets. Nor does the retrieved article text establish current Notifio pricing or availability. Treat the rules as an implementation idea that requires validation against the pages, languages, and currencies a particular service actually encounters.
