Most home devices do not need to be plugged into Ethernet. Keep phones and tablets on Wi-Fi for mobility; consider Ethernet for stationary computers, TVs, or game systems when a cable is practical and you want a steadier connection or less Wi-Fi congestion. A wired link is not a guaranteed speed boost: results depend on your internet service, router, device, cable, and home network.
Which devices are worth connecting by Ethernet?
Start with devices that stay in one place and use the network heavily. The FCC says a direct Ethernet connection can provide the highest speeds and alleviate Wi-Fi congestion, and names laptops, streaming TVs, and gaming systems as examples of devices that can connect directly. That is general guidance, not a rule that every such device must be wired.
Consider wiring stationary devices
- Desktop or work computer: Ethernet may be useful if the computer stays near the router or a safe cable route is available, particularly when wireless performance is unstable.
- Streaming TV: A direct connection is worth considering when the TV is stationary and its Wi-Fi connection is unreliable or competes with other activity.
- Game system: A wired connection can avoid the Wi-Fi signal path for a fixed console and may ease wireless congestion. It does not guarantee a particular speed or gaming result.
The FCC also includes laptops among devices that may connect directly. Since laptops are often moved around, choose Ethernet when the laptop is used at a fixed desk and the cable is convenient; otherwise Wi-Fi is usually more practical.
Keep mobile devices on Wi-Fi
Phones and tablets generally gain more from being able to move freely than from a permanent cable. The FCC’s 2015 report lists phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, game consoles, and Blu-ray players as representative connected-device types, and describes both Wi-Fi and Ethernet as home-network connection methods. That report provides category context, not current port or capability information for any particular model.

What changes when a device uses Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?
| Consideration | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | The device is tethered to the cable route. | Useful for devices that move around, such as phones and tablets. |
| Signal path | A direct cable bypasses the Wi-Fi signal path for that device. | Performance depends in part on wireless range and placement. FCC guidance says 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range than 2.4 GHz. |
| Congestion | Wiring a suitable device can alleviate Wi-Fi congestion. | Multiple simultaneous activities can burden a home network. |
| Setup | Requires compatible Ethernet ports and a safe, acceptable cable route. | Needs no cable run to the device. |
Moving one device to Ethernet does not increase the capacity of your internet service, nor does it remove competition among all other devices and activities. The FCC notes that simultaneous streaming, graphics-intensive gaming, VPN use, and video conferencing can burden a home network even with fast service.
Check ports and cable route before trying Ethernet
- Check the device: Look for an Ethernet port or consult the device manual. Do not assume a particular model has one.
- Check the router: Confirm there is an available Ethernet port on the router, using its manual if needed.
- If the device has no Ethernet port: Consider a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Confirm that the adapter’s connector and operating-system support match your device before buying; compatibility varies.
- Measure the route: Check the distance from router to device and make sure the cable can run without creating a trip hazard or crossing a doorway unsafely.
- Try the connection: Connect the cable at both ends and check whether the device reports a wired connection. Actual performance depends on the internet service, router, device, cable, and network.
The available guidance does not establish that a premium cable category is necessary for every home or device, so check device and router documentation for specific requirements rather than buying on that assumption.

If Wi-Fi is the problem, identify whether it is coverage or congestion
Weak signal in a particular area
When performance is poor mainly because the device is far from the router or separated by the home’s layout, try placing the router centrally to improve coverage. The FCC says a range extender or mesh router may improve signal strength throughout the home. These are coverage options; wiring one device addresses that device’s wireless link rather than extending Wi-Fi to the whole home.
Several devices competing at once
If the connection struggles during overlapping activities such as video streaming, graphics-intensive gaming, VPN use, and video calls, consider moving a stationary, compatible device to Ethernet where practical. This can reduce demand on Wi-Fi, but it will not expand the capacity of the internet plan itself.

A simple decision rule
- Choose Ethernet when a device is stationary, both ends support it, the cable route is practical, and you want to avoid relying on Wi-Fi for that device.
- Choose Wi-Fi when mobility matters or running a cable would be inconvenient or unsafe.
- Address coverage separately with central router placement or, if needed, an extender or mesh system.
