If your Ethernet port has no lights and Windows shows no connection, start by checking the cable and the ports at both ends—not by replacing the computer’s network adapter. A dark light can indicate that a device detects no physical link, but it does not identify whether the cable, router port, or computer is at fault. Work through the substitutions below to isolate the cause before changing Windows settings.
What a dark Ethernet light tells you
LED meanings vary by computer, router, dock, and switch, and some devices have no visible link indicator. Check the manual for your exact model rather than assuming a particular color or blink pattern has a universal meaning.
For the Dell devices covered by its guide, Dell defines “Off | No light” as “No physical link has been detected by the hardware.” That points to a link-level issue, but it does not tell you which component caused it. Dell lists possibilities including a loose or defective cable, an unpowered or faulty network-device port, or an Ethernet adapter disabled in Device Manager or BIOS. Dell’s Ethernet-port guide explains the model-specific scope.

When there is no physical link, first investigate the cable, connectors, ports, and adapter link state. TCP/IP or DNS commands are not the first step for a port that is not detecting a link.

Check the cable and router port first
- Confirm the computer has an Ethernet port. Make sure the cable is fully inserted at both the computer and router ends.
- Use a LAN port on the router. Connect the computer to a router Ethernet or LAN port—not the Internet/WAN port used for the modem-to-router connection.
- Try a known-working cable. If the link appears with another cable, the original may be defective. If it does not, keep testing rather than concluding the computer port has failed.
- Try another LAN port. If the router has another available, powered Ethernet port, move the cable there. This helps distinguish a single router-port problem from a cable or computer problem.
These checks follow Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance and Dell’s wired Ethernet troubleshooting steps.
Cross-test another device to isolate the fault
When practical, connect the same cable and router port to another computer or an appropriate USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Keep the cable and router port unchanged so the computer or adapter is the main variable.

- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
- The other device connects: The original computer becomes the main suspect. Check its Ethernet adapter status and model-specific settings before considering hardware service.
- The other device also fails: Look again at the cable, router port, or wider network connection. A failed cross-test does not by itself prove which of those is responsible.
- No built-in port on the computer: A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a connection or help test another endpoint. Check that it matches the computer’s USB connector and operating system; it is not a confirmed repair for a failed built-in adapter.
Microsoft recommends testing another PC and notes that the PC, router, ISP, or USB adapter may be involved depending on the result.
Check Windows after the physical tests
If the cable and router port have been substituted but Windows still reports no connection, inspect the Ethernet status in Settings > Network & internet. In Windows 11, Microsoft recommends running the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Interface labels can differ by Windows version.
Rank #3
- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester tests voice (RJ11/12), data (RJ45), and video (coax F-connector) terminated cables, providing clear results for comprehensive testing on unenergized Ethernet cables (not designed to test PoE)
- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
If the problem began after a Windows update and the earlier checks did not resolve it, Microsoft suggests considering an Ethernet driver uninstall and restart. Have a backup driver available before removing the current one. For a Dell computer, its wired Ethernet guide also describes checking BIOS settings and comparing results across devices.
Reserve network reset for last
Microsoft’s Network reset removes installed network adapters and resets their settings. Afterward, you may need to reinstall or reconfigure VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches. Because it changes more than the Ethernet link itself, use it only after simpler cable, port, cross-device, and Windows troubleshooting checks have failed.

- Multi-Function Network Cable Tester: Supports RJ45 (CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7) and RJ11 telephone cables. Quickly detects continuity, short circuits, open wires, miswiring, and cable shielding status, ensuring your LAN or phone lines are correctly wired and ready to use.
- Fast/Slow Mode with LED Indicators: Switch between fast and slow scan speeds to identify wiring issues more precisely. LED lights on both master and remote units show wire order, making it easy to spot errors like open pairs or misaligned pins at a glance.
- Split-Type Design for Long-Distance Testing: Master and remote units can be detached and used separately, allowing you to test both ends of a long cable run, ideal for wall-mounted ports, long runs, or structured cabling. Perfect for home, office, or professional IT setups.
- Compact, Lightweight & Durable: Ergonomically designed with sturdy ABS housing, this pocket-sized tester is ideal for on-the-go network engineers, DIYers, and electricians. It’s your go-to toolkit for cable maintenance, upgrades, or new installations.
- Safe & Easy to Use: Simple one-button operation makes testing quick and hassle-free. LED indicators clearly show wiring status, while the G light instantly identifies shielded (FTP/STP) or unshielded (UTP) cables. Supports safe testing of telephone lines with typical voltages under 48-72V, ideal for both home and professional use.
When to seek model-specific support
If a known-working cable and a working alternate router port still produce no link on one computer, its adapter, a disabled setting, or hardware may be involved. Consult the computer’s manual or manufacturer support for the exact model before replacing a port or adapter. A dark LED alone is not enough to diagnose a broken port.
Microsoft’s Ethernet guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The troubleshooting sequence is still useful for isolating a physical connection, but Windows 10 no longer receives standard support.
