Ethernet can use coaxial cable, but “Ethernet over cable” can also mean internet service delivered over a cable provider’s network. Those are different technologies: the first is an Ethernet physical layer (PHY) designed for coax; the second ordinarily uses DOCSIS to carry broadband over a hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network. Identify which meaning applies before choosing equipment or comparing speeds.

What does “Ethernet over cable” mean?

Ethernet is a family of local-area networking technologies built around a common media access control (MAC) framework. Its physical layer, or PHY, defines how signals travel over a particular medium, at a particular speed and over a supported link length. Some Ethernet PHYs are designed for coaxial cable, but that does not make every Ethernet device or coax installation compatible.

The IEEE’s 802.3-2022 overview describes Ethernet operation across selected speeds from 1 Mb/s to 400 Gb/s. That range covers Ethernet generally; it is not a speed specification for coaxial Ethernet links.

In everyday usage, “over cable” may instead refer to cable-provider internet. That service uses coax as part of the provider’s HFC network, but its broadband access technology is DOCSIS—not necessarily a direct Ethernet PHY running between the customer and provider over coax.

ScreenBeam ECB7250K02 Network Adapter Starter Kit Bonded MoCA 2.5 - Fastest
  • Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
  • Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
  • Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
  • Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
  • Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.

How Ethernet over coax works

A coaxial Ethernet connection requires compatible Ethernet PHY equipment at both ends of a coax link. The PHY encodes and decodes network traffic using signaling suited to its specified medium and speed. The endpoints and the coax installation must match the chosen technology; a coax connector by itself does not establish compatibility.

IEEE also has a standards effort called EPON Protocol over Coax (EPoC). The IEEE 802.3bn task force reports that its work concluded with approval of IEEE Std 802.3bn-2016 by the IEEE-SA Standards Board on September 22, 2016. EPoC is a specific standards-family effort, not a synonym for DOCSIS or for any generic consumer adapter.

Hitron MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter (2-Pack) NOT a Modem - Extends Internet Over Coax | NOT for Satellite/AT&T U-Verse | Works Cable/Fiber/DSL | Requires Connected Coax
  • ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
  • 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
  • ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
  • 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
  • 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.

How cable internet differs

CableLabs describes DOCSIS as the standard for broadband internet access over HFC networks. In an HFC network, fiber serves parts of the provider’s infrastructure and coax is used closer to customers. A customer typically connects a DOCSIS cable modem to the provider service; the modem terminates that access link and supplies a local network interface.

CableLabs says DOCSIS 3.1 was officially released in 2013 and lists a download capability of up to 10 Gbps. That is a technology capability, not a guarantee of a retail plan’s speed or an individual customer’s measured throughput. The IEEE Ethernet speed range and CableLabs’ DOCSIS figure describe different technologies and scopes.

Which meaning fits your setup?

  • You want internet from a cable provider: You mean DOCSIS service over the provider’s HFC network. Check the provider’s approved-device list and your service-tier requirements before selecting a modem.
  • You want a wired link between rooms or devices using coax: You mean a local network link. Identify the specific coax networking technology and confirm that compatible endpoints are available at both ends.
  • You are comparing equipment or speeds: First establish whether the equipment uses an Ethernet coax PHY, DOCSIS, or another home-network-over-coax system. Their endpoints and compatibility requirements are not interchangeable.

What to verify before using existing coax

The general IEEE overview confirms that selected Ethernet PHYs use coaxial cable, but it does not establish installation limits for every PHY. Before relying on existing wiring, check the specific standard and both devices’ documentation for the required cable type, connectors, permitted link length, splitters, and network layout. Do not assume household coax will work just because it has the right-looking connector.

For cable-provider broadband, verify modem approval with the ISP and confirm the device supports your service tier. For either use case, treat published protocol capabilities separately from the speed your plan provides or your installed link actually achieves.
