For ordinary balanced twisted-pair Ethernet, the jacket color does not determine speed, performance category, or intended use. Check the category and construction printed on the cable instead. Color can be useful for appearance or as a locally chosen identifier, but it is not a standards-based performance rating.
Does Ethernet cable color affect speed?
No—not for ordinary balanced twisted-pair Ethernet cabling. BICSI’s standards FAQ says there are no recommended jacket colors based on cable performance category or intended use. A blue, green, or yellow jacket therefore does not, by itself, tell you the cable’s speed or what network task it supports.
To identify a cable, read the markings printed along its jacket. Compare the labeled category and construction with the requirements of your equipment and installation. Also consider length, connector type, shielding, and whether the cable is suitable for its route and environment. The available guidance establishes no performance benefit from choosing one jacket color over another.
What can the outer jacket color tell you?
It can make a cable easier to distinguish, but only if the person or organization choosing the color has assigned it a meaning. For example, an installation team might use a documented color scheme to identify different networks or types of runs. That is a local convention, not a universal standard: check the site’s labeling rules rather than assuming a color means the same thing everywhere.

If there is no such scheme, choose jacket color for appearance or visibility. Do not use it as a substitute for reading the cable’s printed specifications.
What do the colored wires inside the cable mean?
The colored conductors inside a four-pair cable are different from the jacket color. Their colors help an installer connect each conductor to the correct pin in an RJ45 connector. T568A and T568B are two conductor-to-pin arrangements; they do not describe cable speed or outer-jacket color. APC’s pin-sequence reference and Schneider Electric’s wiring reference show the arrangements.

In both schemes, the blue and brown pairs occupy the same listed pin positions, while the orange and green pairs exchange positions. The pin sequence—not the cable’s jacket color—is what matters when terminating the connector.

Should both ends use T568A or T568B?
For a straight-through cable, use the same arrangement at both ends: T568A on both ends or T568B on both ends. Panasonic’s LAN cable termination FAQ describes using A at one end and B at the other as crossover wiring for the Ethernet types it covers. Follow the installation design and equipment instructions that apply to your setup rather than treating either scheme as universally required.

How should you choose or organize Ethernet cables?
- For a cable purchase: Check the printed category and construction, length, connector type, shielding, and suitability for the installation. Treat color as an appearance or identification choice.
- For a new installation: If you use colors to distinguish runs, define the scheme and document it so others can interpret it correctly.
- For termination: Follow the pin map for the selected T568 arrangement and use that same arrangement at both ends for straight-through wiring.
- For troubleshooting: Do not infer a cable’s category or speed from its jacket or the conductor colors alone; check its markings and how it is terminated.
