Ethereum exchange netflow measures ETH moving into exchanges minus ETH moving out over a selected period. Exchange reserves measure the ETH balance attributed to exchange wallets at a particular time. Netflow tracks movement; reserves show the balance left behind. Both can help describe exchange-held supply, but neither proves that traders intend to sell or predicts ETH’s price.
What Ethereum exchange netflow measures
Netflow is a period-based measure: exchange inflow minus exchange outflow. CryptoQuant expresses the calculation as “Exchange Inflow – Outflow = Netflow.” A positive result means the measured exchange wallets received more ETH than they sent out during the chosen interval. A negative result means more ETH left than entered.
The time interval matters. A daily netflow describes the balance of movements during that day; it does not say how much ETH exchanges hold overall, nor does it reveal what any sender or recipient plans to do.

What exchange reserves measure
Exchange reserves are a point-in-time balance: the amount of ETH attributed to exchange addresses. CryptoQuant defines the metric as “The total amount of coins held in the exchange addresses.” The figure depends on which addresses a provider identifies as belonging to exchanges and on the exchanges included in the chart.

Reserves reflect the accumulated effect of movements into and out of the measured wallets, along with the provider’s address attribution and scope. A rising reserve means the attributed exchange-held ETH balance grew; a falling reserve means it shrank.
Netflow vs. reserves at a glance

The two measures can move differently without contradicting each other. Netflow is a movement over an interval, while reserves are a balance. A sizable daily netflow may be small relative to the overall reserve; repeated smaller netflows can gradually affect the reserve trend.

What rising or falling readings may suggest
Positive netflow or rising reserves
Positive netflow means more ETH entered than left during the selected period. Rising reserves mean the attributed exchange balance increased. Either can indicate that more ETH is held in the measured exchange wallets and may be available for trading. That is a possible supply or selling-pressure signal, not evidence that holders will sell: transfers can have other purposes, and the metric does not establish intent.

Negative netflow or falling reserves
Negative netflow means more ETH left than entered during the interval. Falling reserves mean the attributed exchange balance declined. These movements are consistent with ETH moving to self-custody or other destinations, but they do not establish that recipients will hold it long term or are accumulating it.

Why providers’ charts may differ
Before comparing two readings, check that they measure the same thing on the same basis. CryptoQuant documents separate ETH groupings for all exchanges, spot exchanges, and derivative exchanges. A chart covering all venues can therefore differ from one limited to spot exchanges. Providers also use address labels and clustering to attribute wallets, and their identified wallet sets may not match.
- Exchange universe: Confirm whether the chart covers all exchanges, spot venues, or derivative venues.
- Metric and unit: Distinguish netflow from gross inflow or outflow, and ETH-denominated figures from USD-valued balances.
- Time window: Compare the same aggregation interval, such as daily with daily.
- Smoothing: Check whether the displayed series is raw or smoothed. Glassnode, for example, shows a seven-day EMA in its ETH exchange volume chart to make broader trends easier to identify.
- Address attribution and revisions: Providers can update labels and clustering as exchange wallets are discovered and validated, changing recent or historical readings.
CryptoQuant’s ETH Exchange Flows API guide says its endpoint does not support point-in-time accuracy because wallet-address clustering is updated periodically. As a result, a past figure may not exactly match a later data download. Glassnode says its exchange balances are built from an address-label database based on officially published exchange information and proprietary clustering. These methodological differences mean provider figures are not necessarily interchangeable.

Which metric should you use?
Choose the measure that matches the question. Use netflow to examine net ETH movement into or out of a defined exchange set over a particular interval. Use reserves to track the attributed exchange-held balance and how it changes over time. For context, inspect both, while keeping their different time bases in mind.
