Espressif’s ESP32-H2 is a low-power microcontroller for devices that need Zigbee or Thread—not a Wi-Fi-first ESP32. Its IEEE 802.15.4 radio supports both protocols, and Bluetooth 5 LE is integrated too. For a hands-on project, look for an ESP32-H2 development board or module, then build with Espressif’s ESP-IDF and ESP-Zigbee-SDK.
What makes the ESP32-H2 different?
The ESP32-H2 pairs a single-core 32-bit RISC-V processor with an IEEE 802.15.4 radio and Bluetooth 5 LE. That radio is the key distinction: it supports Zigbee and Thread, protocols used by low-power connected devices. Unlike Wi-Fi-oriented ESP32 products, the H2 is aimed at endpoints such as sensors, switches and other home-automation devices.
Hackaday introduced the part in 2021 as a 96 MHz RISC-V chip. That figure reflects the announcement-era description, not a complete current specification for every silicon revision. Espressif’s current product page is the better reference for the chip’s present features and certifications: ESP32-H2 product information.
What are its specifications?
Espressif lists these resources for the ESP32-H2:
| Resource | Espressif-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Single-core, 32-bit RISC-V SoC |
| Wireless | IEEE 802.15.4 and Bluetooth 5 LE; supports Zigbee and Thread |
| SRAM | 320 KB |
| ROM | 128 KB |
| Low-power memory | 4 KB |
| SiP flash | Built-in 2 MB or 4 MB options |
| Programmable GPIO | 19 |
| Peripherals | ADC, SPI, UART, I2C, I2S, RMT, GDMA and LED-PWM |
Those GPIO and peripheral options let a design connect sensors and control hardware as well as communicate wirelessly. The appropriate board or module determines how much of the chip’s connectivity is exposed in a particular project.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can you use it for Zigbee or Thread?
Yes. Espressif says the integrated 802.15.4 radio supports both Zigbee and Thread. The company identifies the ESP32-H2 as a “Zigbee-Compliant Platform” and a “Thread-Certified 1.3.0 Component.” These are platform and component certifications; they do not by themselves certify a finished product or guarantee that any particular device will interoperate without the right firmware and configuration.
For Zigbee development, Espressif provides the ESP-Zigbee-SDK and describes it as production-ready for standard home-automation devices. The chip is also supported by ESP-IDF, Espressif’s development framework. Check Espressif’s product page and linked resources for current documentation, software and sample information.

Is there an ESP32-H2 development board?
The practical starting point is an ESP32-H2 development board or module. A development board gives you a way to prototype and connect peripherals without designing a custom circuit board; a module may suit a later product design, depending on its features and integration requirements.
Confirm the exact board or module listing before buying: board revision, exposed pins, included components, seller and stock can vary. The chip specification alone does not establish what connectors, antenna arrangement or programming interface a particular board provides.

How does it fit into a Matter project?
Espressif positions the ESP32-H2 for Matter development. Its combination of 802.15.4 and Bluetooth LE can support Thread endpoints. For gateway-style designs, Espressif describes pairing the H2 with another Espressif Wi-Fi SoC to build a Thread border router or a Matter-to-Zigbee bridge.
That means the H2 is not a standalone Wi-Fi gateway: the cited gateway and bridge designs use a second Wi-Fi-capable Espressif chip. Choose the architecture based on whether the project is an endpoint, such as a sensor, or a device that must connect wireless networks and protocols.

Is it the right part for a low-power home-automation device?
Consider the ESP32-H2 when the device needs Zigbee or Thread, Bluetooth LE setup or connectivity, and a modest set of local interfaces. Its integrated radios and GPIO/peripheral options give developers a single-chip starting point for many endpoint designs.
- Good fit: Zigbee or Thread sensors, switches and similar connected endpoints where the chosen protocol and board are supported by the project’s software.
- Potentially not a fit: a design that requires Wi-Fi from the same chip, or substantial processing and memory beyond the H2’s listed resources.
- For gateways: plan for the additional Wi-Fi SoC in the Espressif architectures described for border-router or Matter-to-Zigbee bridge roles.
Espressif’s specifications and SDK support establish what the platform offers, but they do not establish real-world battery life or comparative performance. Those outcomes depend on firmware, radio activity, peripherals and the finished device; no battery-life figure or independent head-to-head benchmark is specified here.
