An MS-DOS 5.0 installation error is not one universal fault. If Setup stops around 11% with “An error occurred while reading or writing to drive C:” while saving MS-DOS.SYS, the failure could involve the source floppy, the target hard disk, or a hardware-specific setup incompatibility. First record the exact message, file, drive, and installation stage; then follow the troubleshooting branch that matches your symptom and edition.

What the reported 11% error means

A February 15, 2002 AnandTech forum report describes MS-DOS 5.0 Setup reaching 11% on an 80 MB hard disk and failing while writing MS-DOS.SYS to drive C:. The archived discussion does not record a confirmed cause or successful repair. Participants suggested damaged floppy media or a failing hard disk, but those suggestions were hypotheses rather than test results.

That distinction matters: a read failure from the installation disk and a write failure on C: are different diagnostic paths. The percentage alone does not identify the defective component.

Identify your exact symptom before changing anything

  1. Copy the error message exactly, including the drive letter and filename.
  2. Note whether Setup is reading a diskette, copying files, creating startup files, or rebooting.
  3. Record the disk number requested and whether the same prompt repeats.
  4. Determine whether your package is MS-DOS 5 Upgrade or a full OEM installation set.
  5. Write down the computer model, floppy-drive size and density, hard-disk controller, partitioning software, and any removable-drive drivers.

Back up any accessible files before testing a vintage disk or changing partitions. Do not delete a partition or reformat merely because Setup stops.

Choose the branch that matches the failure

Symptom Most relevant avenue Do not assume
“An error occurred while reading or writing to drive C:” while writing MS-DOS.SYS Check installation-media readability and the target disk, cables, controller, and drive condition using hardware-appropriate diagnostics. That the forum’s suspected bad floppy or hard disk is proven.
Setup repeatedly requests the same upgrade disk Use the documented hard-drive-copy workaround for upgrade media. That the disk-prompt procedure repairs a C: write failure.
Setup names a partition manager, partition type, removable-drive driver, or special machine configuration Follow the matching section of the MS-DOS 5 Upgrade README. That a generic reinstall or different DOS version fixes the incompatibility.
You are attempting a blank-disk installation with Upgrade media Confirm that an existing DOS installation is present and understand the upgrade’s limitations. That Upgrade Setup will partition or format the hard disk.

When Setup cannot write MS-DOS.SYS to C:

1. Check the source floppy without treating it as the diagnosis

Inspect the diskette for visible damage and try reading its files on another compatible drive or computer, if you have one. A disk that cannot be read consistently may be bad, but successful reading does not prove that the target hard disk is healthy. If you recreate setup media, use the correct disk size, density, and drive type for the original package and machine.

2. Check the target drive and its connections

A write error can arise from the hard disk, controller, power, cabling, or an incorrect low-level configuration. Use diagnostic methods designed for that vintage hardware and preserve any data before destructive tests. If the disk reports errors outside Setup as well, stop installation and address the storage fault first. Do not claim that changing DOS releases will repair failing hardware.

3. Verify the partition and active-system state

Confirm that C: is the intended writable DOS partition and that the machine’s partitioning software is compatible with the Setup path you are using. An unusual partition type or disk manager can require a special procedure; do not delete the partition unless you understand that doing so destroys its contents.

MS-DOS 5 Upgrade versus a full OEM edition

The archived Microsoft documentation describes MS-DOS 5 Upgrade as an upgrade to an existing DOS installation. Its Setup does not repartition or reformat a hard drive. A full OEM edition follows different installation assumptions and may provide a clean-install path.

Before using FORMAT, FDISK, or any partition-removal instruction, identify the edition printed on the disks or manual. If the media is Upgrade media, prepare an existing DOS system or use the documented upgrade procedure rather than treating it as a blank-disk installer.

Hardware-specific Setup instructions

Microsoft’s MS-DOS 5 Upgrade README has separate branches for partition managers, partition types, removable-drive drivers, and particular machine configurations. Apply a workaround only when Setup’s message and your hardware match the relevant section.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For example, the README states: “If your system uses Priam or Everex disk-partitioning software, and Setup has referred you to this section, you must do the following to install MS-DOS 5.0:” The conditional wording is important. It is not a general repair for every C: write error. One listed procedure uses setup /f to install to floppy disks when Setup directs users with those configurations to that section. Other cases can involve editing CONFIG.SYS, changing a driver, or handling a partition in a specific way.

If Setup keeps asking for the same disk

A repeated upgrade-disk prompt is a separate problem from failing to write MS-DOS.SYS. Archived Microsoft Knowledge Base guidance recommends copying all files from the upgrade disks into a directory on the hard drive and running Setup from that directory. This removes repeated floppy reads from the main installation path.

For repeated uninstall-disk prompts, the same guidance identifies two possible conditions to check: floppy-drive change-line support and a conflicting volume label. Those checks apply to the prompt loop, not to a hard-drive write error.

Installation requirements and media

An indexed Microsoft manual scan dated 1990 lists these requirements:

  • Hard-disk installation: 512 KB of memory and 2.5 MB of free disk space.
  • Floppy installation: 256 KB of memory.
  • Floppy media: four low-density 5.25-inch disks or two 3.5-inch disks, with drive-density details varying by configuration.

These are period installation specifications, not results from a modern compatibility test. Confirm the figures against the physical manual or an accessible primary copy when an exact disk set matters. If you need replacement media, 3.5-inch floppy disks are appropriate only when your drive and package use that format; verify capacity and density before writing setup or recovery disks.

A safe diagnostic order

  1. Stop and document: record the exact text, percentage, filename, drive, and disk prompt.
  2. Identify the edition: separate Upgrade media from a full OEM set.
  3. Separate read from write: test whether the source floppy can be read and whether C: can reliably accept files.
  4. Check hardware: inspect the diskette, hard disk, controller, cables, and power with equipment suitable for the machine.
  5. Match compatibility notes: consult the README section named by Setup for a disk manager, partition, driver, or machine configuration.
  6. Use the correct prompt workaround: only copy Upgrade files to a hard-drive directory when the symptom is a repeated upgrade-disk request.
  7. Avoid destructive actions: do not repartition, format, or delete a partition until data preservation and edition requirements are clear.

What cannot be concluded from this error alone

  • The historic 11% report does not prove that its floppy disk was bad.
  • It does not prove that its 80 MB hard disk was failing.
  • It does not establish a universal MS-DOS 5.0 bug or a guaranteed fix.
  • A repeated disk prompt is not interchangeable with a C: write failure.
  • Changing to another DOS version is not a hardware repair.

The Bottom Line

Treat “Error installing MS-DOS 5.0” as a symptom, not a diagnosis. Match the exact message and Setup stage to the correct branch: investigate source-media and target-drive integrity for a C: write failure, use the hard-drive-copy method for repeated Upgrade prompts, and follow the README’s conditional instructions for named partition managers or hardware.
