The result connects quantum-device research with a standard semiconductor platform, but it does not demonstrate a production-scale or fault-tolerant quantum computer.
What Equal1 validated
Equal1 said its monolithic test chip contained 29 NMOS and PMOS quantum cells. Each cell hosted a linear quantum-dot array capable of supporting up to three tunnel-coupled dots, along with charge-sensor structures. The company reported testing the arrays from 70 mK to 1.2 K and described their performance and operational stability as robust. These are details and characterizations reported by Equal1, not independently established manufacturing-yield figures.
The process platform was GlobalFoundries’ 22FDX FD-SOI CMOS technology. Equal1 characterized the result as the first demonstration of this kind in a commercial process; that priority claim is the company’s, rather than an independently verified industry-wide conclusion. Equal1’s April 16, 2025 announcement describes the validation.
Why commercial CMOS compatibility matters
Quantum-dot spin qubits use electrical gates to define and control dots in semiconductor material. Showing that such structures can be formed and operated in a commercial CMOS process matters because it may let quantum-device development draw on established fabrication infrastructure and familiar silicon design practices. Those capabilities could help with repeatability and integration as designs develop.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compatibility is a starting point, not evidence that a foundry can already manufacture large quantum processors at high yield or low cost. The announcement establishes neither wafer-scale manufacturing performance nor a large, error-corrected system. A few-dot array and a scalable fault-tolerant computer are very different engineering milestones.

- December 3, 2024: Equal1 reported a six-qubit silicon-germanium array made on a CMOS-compatible process, with 99.4% single-qubit gate fidelity at 84 ns and 98.4% two-qubit gate fidelity at 72 ns. The company also announced a multi-tile controller operating at 300 mK. These results belong to that separate performance announcement, not the 29-cell validation chip. Equal1’s 2024 announcement.
- Technology-page summary: Equal1’s current technology page lists 99.9% average single-qubit gate fidelity and 99.3% average two-qubit gate fidelity, with average gate durations of 140 ns and 200 ns respectively; it also lists 99% readout fidelity and a 10 μs readout time. These are company-page summaries associated with research references. The cited publications are needed to assess methods, device details, and limitations before comparing these numbers with other platforms. Equal1 technology page.
- May 14, 2026: Equal1 described RacQ as a rack-mounted hybrid quantum-classical system powered by UnityQ. The company stated that it fits a standard 19-inch rack format, weighs 400 kg, uses approximately 1.6 kW, and has an integrated closed-cycle cryocooler maintaining 0.3 K. Those are product claims about a different system, not specifications of the 2025 test chip. Equal1’s RacQ announcement.
What the result does—and does not—show
It shows a process-compatibility step
Equal1 reports quantum-dot formation, tunable tunnel coupling, and charge sensing in a commercial GlobalFoundries process. That is relevant evidence that a standard semiconductor platform can support structures used in silicon spin-qubit development.
It does not establish production readiness
The announcement does not provide independent verification of the company’s priority claim, manufacturing yield, cost at scale, or the performance of a useful large processor. Nor does demonstrating quantum-dot arrays amount to demonstrating fault tolerance. Those questions require evidence beyond process validation, including reproducible manufacturing data and system-level results.

GlobalFoundries’ Ted Letavic described the results as promising and said the companies looked forward to further optimization. These statements are quotations and assessments from the companies’ announcement, not independent endorsements.
