Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) both offer energy-infrastructure income, but they are not interchangeable securities. EPD is a publicly traded limited partnership that pays distributions per unit; Enbridge is a Canadian corporation that pays dividends per common share. The better fit depends on business exposure, cash-flow policy, currency, account type and tax residence—not on a universal winner or an unmatched yield figure.
What are you buying?
| Feature | Enterprise Products Partners | Enbridge |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer and security | Enterprise Products Partners L.P., a Delaware publicly traded limited partnership; common units trade on the NYSE as EPD. Company filing with the SEC. | Enbridge Inc., a Canadian issuer; common shares trade as ENB. Enbridge notes tax treatment varies by shareholder country of residence. Official dividend information. |
| Cash payment | Distribution to common unitholders, expressed per unit. | Dividend to common shareholders, expressed per share. |
| Portfolio consideration | Partnership status can introduce tax reporting and account-specific questions; the filing does not determine an individual investor’s outcome. | Canadian issuer status can raise currency and tax questions; the dividend page does not determine an individual investor’s withholding or reporting obligations. |
These distinctions matter before comparing returns. Security structure, tax treatment and the currency in which you measure income can affect what reaches your account. Consult tax guidance relevant to your residence and account rather than assuming the two payments receive identical treatment.
How different are their businesses?
Enterprise: a broad midstream network
Enterprise’s network serves natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), crude oil, petrochemicals and refined products. In its investor letter reporting 2025 operations, the partnership reported equivalent pipeline transportation volumes of 13.7 million barrels per day, up 5% from 2024. Pipeline transportation volumes for NGLs, crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals were 8.3 million barrels per day, also up 5%. Enterprise’s 2025 investor letter.

#1 Best Overall
Enbridge: pipelines, gas and power
Enbridge identifies four core business areas: liquids pipelines; gas transmission and midstream; gas distribution and storage; and renewable power. Its 2026 shareholder letter said 2025 results exceeded the midpoint of guidance for EBITDA and distributable cash flow (DCF) per share, and gave 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance of C$20.2–C$20.8 billion. Enbridge’s 2026 shareholder letter.
The companies therefore offer different mixes within the broad energy-infrastructure category. EPD’s disclosed network spans several hydrocarbon streams and related products; Enbridge combines liquids and gas infrastructure with gas distribution, storage and renewable power. Neither business mix eliminates operating, regulatory, financing or demand risk.
How do the income figures compare?
The companies report payments in different forms and currencies, and the figures below are not yields. Enterprise declared $2.175 per common unit for 2025, a 3.6% increase over 2024. Its fourth-quarter 2025 distribution rate was $0.55 per unit, or $2.20 annualized. These are company-reported figures from Enterprise’s 2026 release reporting 2025 results. Enterprise’s 2025 results.

Enbridge’s official dividend page lists a 2026 quarterly dividend of $0.97 per common share, or $3.88 annualized. The company announced a 3% increase in December 2025, its 31st consecutive annual increase. Its stated target dividend payout ratio is 60%–70% of DCF. Rank #2
Those cash amounts cannot establish which investment currently has the higher yield. Yield depends on the share or unit price on the same date, the listing and currency used, and the calculation method. A fair comparison needs matched-date market prices and a stated calculation date; no such yield ranking follows from the payment figures alone.
What do coverage and payout policies tell you?
Enterprise’s reported coverage
Enterprise reported $7.9 billion in Operational DCF for 2025, 1.7× coverage of distributions declared for that year and $3.2 billion of retained DCF. These company-reported figures indicate that its declared distributions were covered by the company’s chosen cash-flow measure, with cash retained after distributions. Operational DCF and coverage are company-defined measures, not a promise that future cash generation or distributions will be maintained. Enterprise’s 2025 results.
Enbridge’s target payout ratio
Enbridge states a target dividend payout ratio of 60%–70% of DCF. A target is a management policy framework, not a guarantee that actual results will fall within the range or that a dividend increase will follow. The available company materials do not provide a directly comparable coverage figure using the same definition and period as Enterprise’s 1.7× measure.

Both companies operate energy infrastructure. Pipeline and utility operations can face operating and safety incidents, environmental obligations, regulation, counterparty and volume changes, financing costs, interest-rate movements and project delays or cost overruns. Fee-based contracts, utility activities, long histories of increases or management targets do not make distributions or dividends guaranteed.
Enterprise’s own account of 2025 distinguishes fee-based margin growth from weakness in more economically sensitive businesses. Enbridge’s strategy discusses contracted expansion and capital growth; contract structures may shape revenue exposure, but they do not remove project-delivery, financing or operating risks. Review the companies’ 2025 SEC filings for detailed risk factors before investing.
How to decide which one fits your portfolio
- Start with the security structure. Check how a publicly traded partnership versus a Canadian corporation fits your tax residence, account type and reporting needs.
- Compare income on a consistent basis. Use the same valuation date, define the relevant listing and currency, and calculate yield from the market price and the payment period you intend to use.
- Match business exposure to your goals. Consider whether Enterprise’s midstream network or Enbridge’s mix of pipelines, gas distribution and storage, and renewable power better complements your existing holdings.
- Assess payout evidence in context. Enterprise’s reported 2025 coverage and retained DCF and Enbridge’s target payout ratio are useful but different measures; do not rank them as if they were calculated alike.
- Account for currency and risk. A Canadian-share dividend and a U.S.-traded partnership distribution can have different implications for the currency and tax treatment relevant to you. Consider leverage, capital requirements, operating exposures and project execution, not only recent payment growth.
Enterprise called 2025 “another building year for Enterprise Products,” while Enbridge said it believes its diversified business model can succeed through market cycles.
