End-to-end (E2E) tests check that a critical user journey works through the browser, application backend, and any services the journey depends on. Start with a small set of high-impact workflows, make their data predictable, and keep each test independent. Use browser tests for integrated behavior, and let component and API tests cover narrower questions.
What end-to-end testing verifies
An E2E test exercises an application through a real browser and follows the journey into the backend and relevant integrations. It can establish that a user-visible flow—such as signing in, submitting a key form, or completing a purchase—works across those parts. Cypress lists authentication, purchasing, multi-screen persistence, and pre-deployment smoke checks as common E2E scenarios (Cypress end-to-end testing).
That breadth is useful, but it comes with more setup and maintenance than narrower tests. Do not use a browser test for every validation rule or small UI detail; reserve it for behavior that needs confidence across the assembled system.
Choose a small set of high-value journeys
Begin with tasks users must be able to complete and failures that would materially affect them or the business. A practical first suite might cover sign-in, one important form submission, and a purchase or other core transaction. Add a journey when it protects a distinct risk, not merely to increase the test count.

- Identify the user goal and the essential success outcome.
- Include the meaningful boundary conditions for that journey, such as an empty starting state or a returning user, where they represent real risks.
- Keep detailed business rules and isolated UI behavior in component or API tests when a full browser journey adds little confidence.
Organize coverage across layers: component tests isolate UI parts, API tests exercise backend contracts and can prepare state quickly, and E2E tests confirm critical behavior through the rendered site and supporting services. Cypress describes these as complementary testing approaches (Cypress testing types).
Make test data and environments reproducible
A test is only useful when its starting conditions are known. Use a controlled test environment and accounts, and arrange the required application state explicitly rather than relying on whatever data happens to be present.
- Define the precondition. State what must exist before the journey begins—for example, a test account with no submitted request.
- Reset or seed state. Use a supported server-side task or an HTTP request to reset and seed data. Cypress documents both Node tasks and HTTP requests for this purpose (Cypress best practices).
- Use controlled accounts and services. Keep tests away from real customer data and uncontrolled external side effects. Where an integration is part of the risk being tested, decide deliberately how the test environment will exercise it.
- Verify the outcome in the interface. Assert the visible result of the journey, not just that a setup request returned successfully.
Playwright likewise recommends controlling test data and using a staging environment that does not change unexpectedly (Playwright best practices).

Write tests around user-visible behavior
Drive the page as a user would and assert on rendered behavior. Prefer locators based on visible roles, labels, and names; use documented test IDs when a stable user-facing locator is not practical. Avoid incidental CSS classes, DOM structure, or internal function names that can change without changing the user experience. Playwright recommends user-facing attributes and explicit locator contracts, with locators that auto-wait and retry (Playwright best practices).
A role-based locator can make a test easier to understand, but it does not prove that the interface is accessible. Keep accessibility checks explicit and separate where needed.
Keep tests independent
Each test should establish or create its own state and be runnable on its own. Do not depend on a preceding test to sign in, create a record, or leave the browser in a particular state. Playwright’s official guidance says: “Each test should be completely isolated from another test and should run independently with its own local storage, session storage, data, cookies etc.” (Playwright best practices).

Isolation makes failures easier to locate: a failure points to the current test’s setup or journey instead of a chain of earlier tests. It also makes parallel execution more practical, provided the tests do not collide over shared data or accounts.
Choose Playwright or Cypress by fit
Neither framework is a universal winner. Compare how each fits your supported browsers, preferred workflow, test layers, data setup, and CI environment. The capabilities below are documented by the frameworks; they do not establish a universal speed or reliability ranking.
| Decision axis | Playwright | Cypress | How to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser coverage | One API drives Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit (Playwright browsers). | Documents cross-browser testing and CI runs across Firefox and Chrome-family browsers (Cypress end-to-end testing). | Check the configured browser matrix against the browsers your product promises to support; do not assume browser support is identical just because both tools test in browsers. |
| Workflow and scope | Playwright Test includes auto-waiting, assertions, tracing, and parallelism (Playwright introduction). | Cypress describes E2E, component, API, and accessibility testing in its workflow (Cypress testing types). | Consider the testing layers and debugging workflow your team needs. |
| Locators and maintenance | Recommends user-facing attributes and explicit contracts; locators auto-wait and retry (Playwright best practices). | Recognizes test IDs as resilient, while noting that locator choice alone does not establish accessibility (Cypress accessibility best practices). | Choose maintainable locators, then test accessibility directly rather than inferring it from a selector. |
| Data and infrastructure | Advises controlled data and stable staging (Playwright best practices). | Documents Node tasks and HTTP requests for resetting or seeding data (Cypress best practices). | Assess how the framework fits your backend, state-reset mechanism, test accounts, and CI setup. |
Run browser tests in CI
Run the suite regularly on commits or pull requests so regressions are found before release. Keep the browser matrix aligned with the browsers the site supports, and preserve diagnostic artifacts so failures can be investigated rather than merely retried.

- Install the framework and its required browsers in the CI environment using the framework’s current installation guidance.
- Prepare a stable test environment and reset or seed data before each test or suite as appropriate.
- Run the focused critical-journey suite on the chosen trigger, such as a pull request, and add broader coverage on an appropriate schedule.
- Retain traces or equivalent artifacts for failed runs. Playwright provides CI guidance for browser installation and sharding, as well as tracing for diagnosis (Playwright CI; Playwright Trace Viewer).
Sharding can distribute work, but it does not fix shared-state conflicts. Ensure parallel tests use independent data or isolated accounts, and investigate persistent failures instead of treating repeated retries as proof the suite is healthy.
Use accessibility automation as one layer
Automated scans can detect some known issues, but they cannot prove that a website is accessible. Cypress explicitly notes that manual testing remains necessary (Cypress accessibility best practices). Pair scans with assertions around critical flows and manual evaluation.
- Check that form fields have appropriate labels and controls have understandable names.
- Assert that expected semantic elements are present in important views.
- Exercise keyboard access and verify focus behavior through key workflows.
- Review the experience manually; passing a scan or using role-based locators is not a certification of accessibility.

Troubleshoot common E2E failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A test passes only after another test runs | It relies on shared browser state, data, or test order. | Make the test create its own preconditions, reset its data, and run independently. |
| An element is intermittently missing | The page may still be rendering, or the locator may depend on a transient implementation detail. | Use a locator tied to visible behavior and an assertion that waits for the expected state; inspect a trace to understand the timing. |
| A test fails because records already exist | Its starting data is not controlled. | Reset or seed the server state explicitly and use test-owned records. |
| Failures appear only in CI | The CI browser, environment, data, or timing differs from local runs. | Check browser installation and environment configuration, capture diagnostic artifacts, and reproduce with the same controlled data and browser where possible. |
| Accessibility scan passes but users still encounter barriers | Automated scans cover only some detectable issues. | Add flow-specific assertions and manual keyboard, focus, and semantic checks. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every website test be end-to-end?
No. Use component tests for isolated UI behavior and API tests for backend contracts or fast state setup; reserve E2E tests for important integrated user journeys.
Does a passing automated accessibility scan mean a site is accessible?
No. Scans can find some issues, but manual evaluation and checks of keyboard access, focus, labels, and names are still needed.
