To access a Windows PC remotely, first check the edition installed on the computer you want to reach: built-in Remote Desktop can host incoming connections on Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server, but not Windows Home. Then choose the right method: use built-in Remote Desktop for recurring access to an eligible PC, or an attended support tool when someone is present to approve the session.
The computer being accessed is the host; the device you connect from is the client. Turning on Remote Desktop does not, by itself, make the host reachable over the public internet. The host also needs to be on, permitted accounts, firewall access, and a working network route.
Check the host’s Windows edition and choose an access method
On the PC you want to reach, check its Windows edition before changing settings. Built-in Remote Desktop hosting is supported on Windows Professional, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server. Windows Home cannot host an incoming built-in Remote Desktop session, although Home and other Windows editions can be used as clients. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop setup guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Your need | Option | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated access to an eligible Windows PC | Built-in Remote Desktop | Requires a supported host edition, an allowed account, a running host, and a network route. |
| Help for someone who is present and can approve access | Quick Assist | The helper provides a time-limited code. The person sharing the screen approves screen sharing and separately approves control. |
| Persistent access to a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer, or a one-time support session | Chrome Remote Desktop | Google documents persistent access secured with a PIN and one-time support codes; sessions are encrypted. |
These are different workflows. Quick Assist is consent-based, attended help, not a way to silently reconnect to your own PC later. For an unexpected support request, stop and verify the person independently: Microsoft says it does not initiate unsolicited requests for device access.

Enable built-in Remote Desktop on the Windows host
- On the host PC, open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Switch Enable Remote Desktop to On, then confirm.
- Note the PC name shown on the Remote Desktop settings page. You will use it, or the host’s IP address, when connecting.
- If another account needs to connect, use the user-selection control in Remote Desktop settings to add it. Members of the Administrators group and users specifically permitted there can connect.
Microsoft’s instructions for enabling Remote Desktop also cover the prerequisites and account permissions.
Connect from another device
From another Windows PC
- Open Remote Desktop Connection on the client PC.
- Enter the host’s PC name or IP address and select Connect.
- When prompted, enter credentials for an account permitted to access the host.
If you are connecting from macOS or iOS, Microsoft documents Windows App as a client; for Android, it documents the Remote Desktop app. App names and availability can change, so use Microsoft’s current Remote Desktop clients page for current installation information.

- The host is powered on and connected to its network.

- The client has a network route to the host.
- The host firewall allows Remote Desktop.
On an employer- or school-managed PC, follow the administrator’s access and security rules.

Reach a host outside its local network
A client outside the host’s home or office network needs a working route into the destination network. Microsoft identifies a VPN or port forwarding as possible approaches, but the right configuration depends on the network, router, firewall, VPN endpoint, and organizational policy. A VPN subscription alone does not automatically make a particular PC reachable. For a work computer, ask the organization’s IT administrator how remote access is provided.
Secure remote access and protect your privacy
- Use trusted networks. Microsoft advises: “Only enable Remote Desktop on trusted networks, such as your home network, and avoid enabling it on devices that require strict access controls.” Read its official Remote Desktop guidance.
- Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled when possible. Microsoft recommends NLA for most environments because it requires authentication before a remote session is established. If an older client cannot use NLA, treat any compatibility change cautiously and restore the protection when possible.
- Limit who can sign in. Permit only intended accounts and use strong, unique passwords for accounts with remote access.
- Turn off access when you no longer need it. Leaving remote access enabled unnecessarily increases exposure.
- Be cautious with attended support. Quick Assist can expose the screen and allow control if the user approves it. Microsoft recommends using it only with trusted people. Microsoft also says it will not contact people through unsolicited calls, emails, or other methods to request device access. See Microsoft’s Quick Assist guidance and advice on tech-support scams.
Use Quick Assist for a session someone can approve
Quick Assist is suited to helping a person who is at their device and can review each request. The helper shares a time-limited code; the person receiving help approves screen sharing and must separately approve a request for control. Follow Microsoft’s current Quick Assist instructions. Do not treat an approval prompt as routine if you did not initiate the help session.

Set up Chrome Remote Desktop as a cross-platform alternative
Google documents Chrome Remote Desktop for remote access to Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. It supports persistent access configured with a PIN as well as one-time support codes. Use Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop setup instructions for the current installation and connection steps; the setup differs from Windows’ built-in Remote Desktop settings.
Choose based on the host’s operating system and edition, whether access is recurring or attended, the required account and consent steps, whether a network route or VPN is needed, and any organizational restrictions.
