EmDash’s plugin registry is a catalog and trust workflow for sandboxed CMS extensions—not a guarantee that every plugin is harmless. Registry plugins run through a sandbox runner, declare the capabilities and network hosts they need, and require administrator review. EmDash’s plugin CLI also scaffolds an agent-ready project, but people still decide what access to grant, what to test, and what to publish.
How does EmDash’s plugin registry work?
EmDash is Cloudflare’s open-source content management system built on Astro. Its 1.0 release was announced on September 28, 2026. The product combines an admin interface, APIs, a command-line interface, and a built-in MCP server for human and agent workflows. Cloudflare’s 1.0 announcement describes the release and its development with contributors and production users.
The official registry is the supported catalog for sandboxed extensions. In the EmDash admin, an administrator can inspect a plugin’s publisher, metadata, requested permissions, and verification status before choosing whether to install it. Installation requires the plugins:manage permission, configured storage for downloaded bundles, and an available sandbox runner. EmDash verifies a release’s checksum, name, version, and permissions; if the publisher requires build provenance, that evidence is checked too. The registry documentation and installation guide describe the workflow.

Names, publishers, and releases
A public plugin name combines the publisher’s current Atmosphere handle with a package slug, such as @example.com/my-gallery. Handles can change, so the publishing guide advises pinning the publisher’s DID rather than relying on a mutable handle. Releases are signed records associated with the publisher account, and an existing published version cannot be overwritten; a change requires a new version. The publishing guide explains these identity and release rules.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This identity model avoids making a central marketplace account the sole basis of a package’s public name, but it does not mean the registry has no hosted infrastructure: the documentation describes a hosted default registry endpoint, and name resolution remains important. If an identity handle becomes invalid, new installs are blocked. Existing installations remain in their current state pending review; that is not the same as verifying that the publisher identity is still valid.
Updates are reviewed too
EmDash repeats verification for updates. If a new release requests additional access, the administrator must approve it again. Confirmation is also required for certain MCP or route changes. Review the release’s changes and permissions rather than treating an update as an automatic continuation of the original consent.

Are EmDash plugins sandboxed?
Registry plugins are always run through a sandbox runner and receive only the access declared in their manifest. A plugin can request capabilities—such as reading or writing content—and specify which network hosts it may contact. The administrator sees those requests before installation. EmDash’s publishing guide gives a Slack-notification example that can read content and contact hooks.slack.com, but cannot write content, see users, or contact other hosts under that example manifest. If a hook needs a capability it did not declare, EmDash skips the hook and logs a warning. The publishing guide details the manifest model.

Sandboxing narrows access; it does not make approved access harmless. For example, a plugin granted redirects:write can change where visitors are sent. The consent screen’s descriptions of content, media, network, and redirect permissions make least-privilege review more practical, but an administrator still needs to judge whether each requested operation is appropriate. The installation guide cautions that an approved permission authorizes the operation it describes.

Cloudflare’s April 1, 2026 introduction contrasted EmDash’s isolated Workers approach with plugins that share a CMS server process. Its September 1.0 announcement says the team spent five months working with contributors and production users on areas including plugin security, migrations, editorial workflows, localization, performance, and reliability. These are Cloudflare’s descriptions of its architecture and development work, not the findings of an independent security audit. The introduction provides the original architecture context.
Registry plugins versus native plugins
| Type | Execution and isolation | Distribution and installation | Access implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registry plugin | Runs through a sandbox runner. | Published to the official registry and installed through the EmDash admin, with release verification and administrator consent. | Receives declared capabilities and allowed-host access; permissions must be reviewed. |
| Native plugin | Executes inside the EmDash server process; it is not sandboxed by the registry system. | Distributed through npm and cannot be published to the official registry. | Runs with server-process authority rather than the registry sandbox’s isolation and limits. |
The registry documentation distinguishes the two plugin types. Choose native distribution only with a clear understanding of its different trust boundary; it is not a way to publish a registry plugin with fewer review steps. Registry documentation and sandbox documentation cover the distinction.

How do I publish an EmDash plugin?
The documented workflow starts with the plugin CLI. Its scaffold collects publisher, author, security-contact, and source-repository information, then creates a manifest, TypeScript entry point, test setup, AGENTS.md, and a plugin-creation skill. Open the generated project in a coding agent or editor and build against the plugin APIs from that project. The September 28, 2026 publishing guide gives the procedure.
- Scaffold a project: run
pnpm dlx @emdash-cms/plugin-cli init my-pluginand provide the publisher and project details requested by the CLI. - Implement the extension: use the generated TypeScript entry point and manifest to define the plugin’s behavior, capabilities, and allowed hosts. Keep requests limited to the operations the plugin actually needs.
- Test locally and on the target runtime: connect a local development build to an EmDash site and exercise the plugin there. If production will run on Cloudflare, test on Cloudflare as well; the Node.js and Cloudflare runtimes have different enforcement and resource constraints.
- Publish a release: use the publisher identity and release process documented by EmDash. Published versions are immutable, so subsequent changes require a new version.
The generated agent guidance makes the APIs easier for coding agents to use; it does not autonomously approve access, validate a plugin’s safety, or make publishing decisions. A publisher remains responsible for the code and its declared access, and an administrator decides whether to install it.

Current bundle and execution limits
The publishing guide dated September 28, 2026 lists these implementation constraints. They are runtime and registry limits, not general performance guarantees; check the current guide before relying on them because product limits can change.
| Constraint | Documented limit |
|---|---|
| Total decompressed bundle size | 256 KB |
| Maximum size per file | 128 KB |
| Maximum files | 20 |
| Backend dependencies | Node built-ins such as fs and path are not allowed. |
| Call duration | Both documented runners stop a call after 30 seconds. |
| Cloudflare CPU time | 50 ms per invocation. |
| Cloudflare subrequests | At most 10 per invocation. |
These figures come from the publishing guide dated September 28, 2026; the Cloudflare-specific caps apply to that runner, not to every deployment route.
Which sandbox runner should you choose?
The main choice is between running the documented Node.js sandbox runner and deploying on Cloudflare Workers with Worker Loader. The Cloudflare path requires a Workers Paid plan for Worker Loader; that is a prerequisite for this runner, not a general requirement to use EmDash. The sandbox guide and publishing guide describe the options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Deployment route | Runtime setup | Plan requirement | Database compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Node.js | Use @emdash-cms/sandbox-workerd with its workerd peer dependency; plugins run in a separate workerd process. |
The cited guide does not state a paid-plan requirement for this route. | The documented Cloudflare Hyperdrive restriction concerns the Cloudflare bridge; check the Node.js deployment’s own database configuration. |
| Cloudflare Workers | Configure the LOADER Worker Loader binding and export PluginBridge from the Worker entry point. |
Worker Loader requires a Workers Paid plan. | The Cloudflare plugin bridge uses D1 directly; sandboxed plugins are currently unavailable on Cloudflare sites using the Hyperdrive database adapter. |
EmDash’s Cloudflare guide says the bridge uses the D1 binding directly and that sandboxed plugins cannot currently run on Cloudflare sites using Hyperdrive. This is a specific compatibility limitation, not a statement that EmDash as a whole cannot use Hyperdrive. If your site uses that adapter, do not assume the Cloudflare registry runner will work; consult the current deployment guide before selecting a route. The Cloudflare guide and sandbox guide document the constraint.
What happens if no runner is available?
Sandboxed plugins will not load, and registry installation fails if no runner is available. The documentation says the rest of the site is unaffected. Do not disable sandboxing in production as a workaround: without the runner, host allowlist, and resource limits, plugins gain server-process authority. EmDash’s sandbox documentation explains this risk.
