Consider EmDash if your site is built—or being rebuilt—with Astro, your editors need a content-management interface, and your team is comfortable operating the database and media storage in the same application deployment. It is a stable, open-source CMS, but it is not a drop-in WordPress replacement: importing content does not bring WordPress PHP themes or plugins with it. If your site depends on those, or you want WordPress’s established theme and plugin ecosystem, staying with WordPress may be the more practical choice.
What EmDash changes about an Astro site
EmDash 1.0 was announced on September 28, 2026, as a free, open-source CMS built on Astro. Its publisher describes it as an Astro-integrated application with an admin panel, API, command-line interface, and MCP server. The architecture places the public site and admin in the same runtime, using the same database and media storage, rather than connecting a separate frontend to a separately operated CMS service. EmDash 1.0 announcement and EmDash architecture documentation.
Editors manage content through forms generated from collections and fields; available work can include drafts, publishing, media, taxonomies, menus, and widget areas, depending on site configuration and permissions. Developers still build Astro pages and components to determine how that content appears. EmDash gives editors a CMS interface, but it does not eliminate Astro development.

When EmDash is a good fit
- Your public site is already built with Astro, or the rebuild is deliberately moving to Astro.
- Editors need to create and update structured content without changing files in the code repository.
- You want the CMS and public site to share one application and deployment rather than operate as separate services.
- Your team can run and maintain the database and media storage that the application depends on.
The official fit guidance also points to agency-built sites handed over to client editors, small Astro teams, and WordPress migrations where the frontend is being rebuilt in Astro. EmDash documentation.

How EmDash compares with WordPress and Astro content collections
These options solve different workflow and deployment problems. EmDash suits editor-managed content inside an Astro application; file-based Astro collections suit content maintained alongside code; a separate headless CMS suits teams that need an independently operated content service, potentially shared by multiple applications.
| Option | Content and editing workflow | Deployment and operations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| EmDash | Editors use an admin interface; developers define Astro presentation. | CMS and public site share an application runtime, database, media storage, and deployment. | An Astro site that needs an editorial interface and can be operated as one application. |
| Astro file-based content collections | Content lives in the repository and fits a Git-oriented contributor workflow. | Content changes are part of the code and deployment workflow. | Teams that want content managed in version control rather than through a separate editor interface. |
| Separate headless CMS | Content is managed in an independent CMS service and can be consumed by multiple frontends. | The content service is deployed and operated separately from the Astro site. | Several applications need to share a content service that is independent of any one frontend. |
| WordPress | A familiar editorial system with a large theme and plugin ecosystem. | Its existing PHP implementation and dependencies remain relevant to the site. | Sites that rely on WordPress themes, plugins, existing PHP work, or familiar WordPress workflows. |
EmDash’s 1.0 announcement identifies WordPress’s ease of getting started, accessible editing, and extensive theme and plugin ecosystem as strengths. Those strengths matter: the available evidence does not establish that EmDash offers equivalent ecosystem maturity. The choice is not simply which CMS has more features; it is whether your team wants content management coupled to an Astro application or wants to retain WordPress’s established environment. What a WordPress-to-EmDash migration includes
EmDash documents two ways to bring WordPress content over: upload a WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) export, or install the EmDash Exporter plugin in WordPress and connect using an application password. The exporter route can include content that is not exposed through the normal public REST API. EmDash WordPress migration guide.
Import is a content-transfer path, not a turnkey site conversion. EmDash does not run WordPress PHP themes or plugins. Its migration guide maps theme files to Astro routes and identifies design and custom plugin behavior as work to implement in Astro and EmDash. The admin interface is not a visual copy of wp-admin, and Gutenberg blocks become Portable Text; which admin screens are available depends on the collections and features configured for the site. Plan for content-state changes
The importer maps published WordPress items to published EmDash items. Draft, pending, private, future, trash, and unknown states become drafts. That mapping makes a review of publication status essential: an import can change which items are ready to appear on the new site. EmDash WordPress migration guide.
Use a staged cutover
- Choose the import route and transfer content into a working EmDash instance while the WordPress site remains available.
- Check imported content, authors, taxonomies, menus, links, and downloaded media against the original site.
- Review permissions and publication states, paying particular attention to items that were not published in WordPress.
- Rebuild the Astro presentation and any custom behavior formerly supplied by a theme or plugin; review URL changes and prepare redirects where needed.
- Only switch DNS or retire WordPress after the content and site behavior have been verified.
The official migration guidance specifically advises keeping WordPress and its media available until those checks are complete. Importing successfully is not proof that links, presentation, or site behavior are ready for a cutover. EmDash WordPress migration guide.

What EmDash’s plugin security model does—and does not—mean
The 1.0 announcement says sandboxed plugins run in isolation and receive only capabilities approved at installation. It describes a Cloudflare Dynamic Workers implementation and a Node.js option using a separate process in the open-source workerd runtime. The architecture documentation makes an important distinction: standard-format plugins can run in an isolated runtime when the site configures a sandbox runner and grants capabilities, while native plugins run with the host application’s access. EmDash 1.0 announcement; EmDash architecture documentation.
So, do not treat “plugins are sandboxed” as a blanket guarantee covering every plugin type or configuration. The isolation claim applies to sandboxed plugins; native plugins have host access, and the documented sandbox setup and approved capabilities matter.

For context on WordPress security, Patchstack’s 2025 report on findings from 2024 counted 7,966 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem, primarily in third-party plugins. Patchstack attributed 96% of vulnerabilities it uncovered that year to plugins and 4% to themes, and reported seven in WordPress core, none of which it characterized as significant enough to pose a widespread threat. Its report also said 43% of the vulnerabilities uncovered required no attacker authentication; that describes the authentication prerequisite, not by itself the ease or likelihood of exploitation. These are counts and shares of disclosed vulnerabilities under Patchstack’s methodology—not the probability that a particular WordPress site will be compromised. Patchstack 2025 security whitepaper.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose EmDash: Astro is your chosen framework; editors need structured content management; and a shared CMS/site application, database, and media layer suit your operations.
- Keep WordPress: your current site depends on PHP implementation, WordPress themes or plugins, or a workflow you do not want to rebuild.
- Choose file-based Astro content: contributors are comfortable editing content in the repository and you do not need a separate editorial admin.
- Choose a separate headless CMS: multiple applications need a content service that should be deployed and operated independently of the Astro frontend.
EmDash makes the most sense as an architectural choice made alongside an Astro decision, not as a shortcut for replacing a working WordPress installation. For an existing WordPress site, evaluate the presentation and custom behavior rebuild as carefully as the content import.
