What EMC announced in 2013
EMC introduced ViPR at EMC World in Las Vegas on May 6, 2013. The company presented it as a foundation for software-defined, Web-scale data centers: storage administrators could manage different arrays through common policies instead of treating every vendor platform as a separate system.

How ViPR’s control plane and data plane worked
ViPR separated storage management from storage functionality. That division was the product’s central architectural idea.
ViPR Controller: the control plane
ViPR Controller provided the abstraction layer over storage infrastructure. It was intended to discover and represent storage resources from EMC, non-EMC, commodity and other third-party systems, then apply policies for provisioning and management.

In the operating model EMC described, administrators or self-service users would work with policies and service requests rather than manually configuring each array. The controller would translate those requests into actions on the underlying infrastructure.
- Represent heterogeneous arrays and their available resources through a common model.
- Apply policy-based rules to a provisioning or management request.
- Automate the required operations across the selected storage systems.
- Expose the result through enterprise or service-provider workflows.
ViPR Data Services: the data plane
ViPR Data Services supplied storage functions that applications consume. The initial emphasis was object storage, with EMC describing object services that could run across existing arrays and commodity hardware rather than requiring a new proprietary storage system.

The separation meant the controller could coordinate infrastructure while data services delivered an access method or storage capability. EMC’s materials described the two components as complementary rather than as interchangeable editions of the same product.

Object interfaces
At launch, EMC identified support for Amazon S3, OpenStack Swift and Atmos APIs. It also described object access through file-like views, allowing users or applications accustomed to file-oriented access to interact with object data.
Planned ecosystem extensions
EMC’s launch discussion included a roadmap involving HDFS and VMware software-defined data centers. Those items were forward-looking plans in the 2013 announcement, not evidence that every roadmap capability was available on the initial release date.

Was ViPR hardware or software?
ViPR was a software platform, not a storage array or a fixed hardware appliance. Its design was to control existing storage infrastructure and extend it with data services. EMC specifically discussed using existing arrays and commodity hardware for the data-services layer, which distinguished ViPR from buying a new, self-contained storage system.
Intended use cases
- Enterprise storage automation: standardized provisioning and policy enforcement across multiple arrays.
- Service-provider operations: repeatable, self-service workflows for storage delivered as an internal or external service.
- Object repositories: S3-, Swift- or Atmos-compatible access for application and archive workloads.
- Web-scale data centers: an operating model based on software control and pooled infrastructure.
- Hadoop-oriented data lakes: a direction reflected in EMC’s HDFS roadmap discussion.
- VMware-integrated software-defined data centers: an ecosystem direction EMC identified for future integration.
What the launch evidence does—and does not—show
EMC clearly presented ViPR as a strategic platform for abstraction, automation and self-service across heterogeneous storage. However, the 2013 launch announcements did not provide an independent performance benchmark, a verified customer-count figure or a third-party comparison with other storage-management products. Claims about simplification, scale or operational benefits should therefore be understood as EMC’s product positioning unless supported by later independent evidence.
ViPR is now a historical EMC launch. Anyone evaluating a purchase, deployment, successor product, licensing arrangement or support option needs separate, current confirmation of ownership, availability and lifecycle status; those details are not established by the 2013 announcements.
