If mail from your Node.js app still lands in spam after you configured SPF, DKIM and DMARC, inspect a copy of the message as the recipient received it. Compare the visible From: domain with the SPF-authenticated envelope domain and the DKIM signature’s d= domain. DMARC passes when at least one passing SPF or DKIM identity aligns with the visible From domain; a standalone SPF or DKIM pass does not prove alignment. Even a DMARC pass is not an inbox-placement guarantee.

Start with the message that landed in spam

A Node.js mailer’s successful sendMail callback—or an SMTP relay accepting the submission—does not tell you whether a recipient accepted the message, authenticated it, or placed it in the inbox. Use the full headers of an affected message as your primary evidence. If possible, compare them with a similar message delivered to the inbox.

  • Record the recipient system: personal Gmail, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365/Outlook, or another provider. Requirements and diagnostics differ.
  • Note whether the message was sent directly, forwarded, or distributed through a mailing list, and whether it is transactional or promotional. Google’s direct-mail alignment guidance for personal Gmail differs for indirect mail such as forwarding or mailing lists, where ARC headers are relevant. See Google’s sender FAQ.
  • Save the timestamp, the complete received headers, and any SMTP delivery response or provider log entry. Do not share message bodies, recipient addresses, access tokens, or private keys in public support forums.

Read the three identities in the received headers

Find the recipient’s Authentication-Results header. It typically reports SPF, DKIM and DMARC results, along with the identities used for those checks. Header formats vary by receiver, so use the identities actually shown rather than assuming a particular field name.

What to inspect What it identifies What to compare
From: The visible author address and its domain, as presented to the reader. Use this domain as the reference for DMARC alignment.
SPF identity, often shown as smtp.mailfrom The SMTP envelope sender domain, associated with MAIL FROM and commonly reflected in the return path. Check whether SPF passed and whether this authenticated domain aligns with the visible From domain.
DKIM result and signature d= The domain that signed the message. Check whether DKIM passed and whether its signing domain aligns with the visible From domain.
DMARC result and disposition The receiver’s overall DMARC evaluation and any reported policy action. If it failed, determine whether the SPF path, the DKIM path, or both lacked an aligned pass.

DMARC uses authenticated SPF and DKIM identifiers and their alignment with the visible From domain; it does not treat a pass on either protocol as automatic proof of alignment. The DMARC specification describes the identifiers and alignment rules. Microsoft’s authentication troubleshooting guidance also explains how differing MAIL FROM and From domains can produce an alignment failure when DKIM does not provide an aligned pass.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For example, spf=pass with an unrelated envelope domain is not an aligned SPF pass for your visible From domain. Likewise, dkim=pass with an unrelated d= domain does not establish aligned DKIM. If the receiver reports dmarc=fail, use the reported identities to locate the failure instead of changing DNS records at random.

Trace the sending path and verify DNS against it

Make an inventory of every system that sends mail using your domain: the production relay, transactional provider, marketing platform, support desk, and any other application. A record that authorizes one sender does not automatically authorize every service. Google advises senders to include all sending services in SPF; an unlisted third-party sender is more likely to have messages marked as spam. See Google’s SPF setup guidance.

Check SPF and the actual envelope sender

  • Compare the receiver-reported SPF identity with the envelope domain your Node.js mail route actually uses. Do not assume that the visible From: address is the SPF identity.
  • Confirm that the SPF record for the relevant hostname authorizes the actual sending service. Consolidate authorized senders into the intended SPF record; do not publish multiple SPF records for one hostname. Follow the sending provider’s own setup instructions.
  • If you recently changed SPF for Gmail delivery, Google says changes can take up to 48 hours to start working. This is a propagation note, not a guarantee that delivery will recover within that period. See Google’s SPF troubleshooting page.

Check the DKIM selector and signing domain

  • Read the selector from the received DKIM-Signature and check that its public key is published for the signing domain and matches the sender’s configured private key.
  • Check the signature’s d= value against the visible From domain. A valid key and a passing signature do not by themselves establish that the signing domain aligns.
  • In Nodemailer’s DKIM configuration, the relevant concepts include domainName, keySelector and privateKey. Consult the Nodemailer project README for the documentation corresponding to your installed version.

Find out whether the message changed after DKIM signing

DKIM checks a signature over selected headers and message content. A relay, gateway, mailing list or transport rule that changes signed content after signing can invalidate the signature. Microsoft identifies body modification after signing as one cause of DKIM body-hash failure. Nodemailer also warns that downstream SMTP services may change headers such as Message-Id or Date, which can invalidate a signature if those headers were signed.

  1. Map the route from the Node.js app through every relay, provider, gateway and list before delivery.
  2. Determine where DKIM signing occurs and which stage first changes headers or body content, if any.
  3. Compare sender-side output with the received headers and body where you can do so safely. Use the receiving system’s DKIM result to confirm whether the final delivered message still verifies.

For guidance on signed-message failures, see Nodemailer’s README and Microsoft’s authentication troubleshooting page.

Check which Gmail sender requirements apply

Google’s requirements here concern mail sent to Gmail accounts; do not assume their thresholds or policies apply identically to every mailbox provider. Google says all senders need SPF or DKIM, valid forward and reverse DNS for sending domains and IPs, TLS, RFC 5322-compliant messages, and a spam rate below 0.3%.

For senders exceeding 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts, Google’s bulk-sender requirements include SPF, DKIM and DMARC, with DMARC set to at least p=none. Google also requires alignment of the From domain with SPF or DKIM for direct mail, and one-click unsubscribe for applicable promotional or subscribed messages. Google’s FAQ describes the volume threshold as close to 5,000 or more in a 24-hour period and says mail across subdomains under the same primary domain counts toward it. Check the current wording in Google’s sender guidelines and FAQ for your sender and traffic type.

Google recommends aligning both SPF and DKIM for greater reliability, even though its direct-mail alignment requirement can be satisfied by either an aligned SPF pass or an aligned DKIM pass. Forwarding or mailing-list traffic may need a different analysis; see the FAQ’s guidance on indirect mail and ARC.

Use Postmaster Tools and SMTP errors as supporting evidence

For Gmail delivery, Google Postmaster Tools provides an Authentication dashboard with aggregate SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass rates, plus a Compliance status dashboard for sender requirements. These aggregate signals complement the evidence in an individual received message; they do not identify every message-specific cause. Google also notes that third-party message modification can cause SPF and DKIM failures and consequently affect DMARC.

Capture the complete SMTP response when a delivery attempt fails. Google documents 4.7.27 and 5.7.27 for SPF failure, 4.7.30 and 5.7.30 for DKIM failure, and 4.7.32 for From-header alignment problems in bulk-sender contexts. Treat these as clues, not a diagnosis of every message sent to spam: compare them with the message’s Authentication-Results. The code descriptions are in Google’s SMTP errors and codes.

What to include when escalating a Node.js mail issue

Give your mail provider or administrator enough evidence to trace the failing hop without exposing secrets. Include:

  • Complete headers from the affected received message, with personal addresses and identifying content redacted where appropriate.
  • Timestamp, recipient provider, and whether the message was direct, forwarded, or sent via a list.
  • A sanitized outline of the sending route, the Nodemailer version, and relevant provider delivery logs.
  • The SPF record, DKIM selector and public-key DNS answer, DMARC record, and the identities reported in Authentication-Results.
  • Postmaster Tools data if Gmail is involved.

To record the installed Nodemailer version locally, run npm ls nodemailer from the project directory. Never send a DKIM private key or mail-provider credentials as part of a diagnostic bundle.

If SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass but mail still goes to spam

A successful authentication result establishes that the checks passed for that message; it does not guarantee inbox placement. Google lists other sender requirements, and recipient systems also make filtering decisions based on factors beyond authentication, including message handling and recipient behavior. If the received copy shows DMARC passing, check the applicable receiver requirements and aggregate reputation or compliance signals rather than repeatedly changing records that already match the observed message. For Gmail, use the requirements and Postmaster Tools information above; for other providers, use that provider’s own diagnostics.
