Elon Musk’s “this week” statement was made on June 2, 2025, when XChat was still in limited testing. He said X expected to roll it out more broadly that week if scaling went smoothly. X’s current documentation now describes Chat as an existing feature, but encrypted messaging depends on registration, recipient eligibility and the conversation’s status—not simply on having an X account.
What is XChat?
XChat is X’s encrypted messaging system, available through X and the separate X Chat app. X says Chat creates a public-private key pair when a user first enters the feature. You set a PIN, which X says remains on your device and is used to recover the private key from X infrastructure.
For each conversation, X says it creates a separate encryption key. The users’ key pairs are used to exchange that conversation key, which then protects the messages. This is X’s description of its design; it is not an independent certification of the implementation.
X also says its key-backup arrangement uses the Juicebox protocol, with key shares stored across three Juicebox realms currently operated by X. That describes how X says recovery works, but does not by itself establish who could access a key in every possible circumstance.

Chat supports encrypted group messages and media, according to X’s About Chat documentation.
What did Musk mean by “this week”?
TechCrunch reported Musk’s announcement on June 2, 2025. His post said: “This is built on Rust with ‘Bitcoin-style’ encryption, whole new architecture.” The report described XChat as being tested with a limited group and said Musk expected broader availability that week unless scaling problems intervened.
That forecast is historical. It should not be read as a current September 2026 rollout prediction. For present availability, X’s help pages are the relevant source: Chat is documented as an existing product, subject to registration and recipient rules.

Is XChat end-to-end encrypted?
X describes encrypted Chats as protecting message content, links, media, files and reactions. However, encryption is conditional and several important parts of the service remain outside that protection.

X’s European Electronic Communications Code Notice also states: “The current implementation is not ‘forward secure.’” In practical terms, the current design does not provide the protection normally associated with forward secrecy if a long-term key is later compromised.

Who can use encrypted Chat?
Both people must register for Chat to send and receive encrypted messages. X’s documented eligible relationships include:
- The recipient follows or subscribes to the sender.
- The users have messaged each other previously.
- The recipient previously accepted an encrypted message from the sender.
- Both users belong to the same Premium Business or Premium Organization as the sender.
An eligible non-follower can receive a message request, but X says that request starts unencrypted. Encryption begins only after the request is accepted and both users are registered as required.

What registration means
When you first enter Chat, X says it generates your key pair and asks you to create a PIN. The PIN is intended to recover the private key from X’s infrastructure; it is not described as a password that X never possesses in any form. Keep the PIN available, because losing the recovery method can affect access to encrypted conversations.
What does “Bitcoin-style encryption” mean?
“Bitcoin-style encryption” is Musk’s wording, not a named cryptographic standard in X’s help documentation. His reported June 2, 2025 statement linked the phrase to a Rust-based, “whole new architecture.”
X’s formal description is more specific: user key pairs, per-conversation keys, PIN-assisted key recovery and the Juicebox protocol for key shares. X does not define those mechanisms as “Bitcoin-style,” and the phrase alone does not tell you which algorithms, protocols or threat model are being used.
For that reason, treat the phrase as a product description attributed to Musk rather than as a technical security rating.

The available documentation does not independently settle every possible access scenario. X says encrypted content is protected with conversation keys and that private-key recovery is supported through X infrastructure using the user’s PIN. It also confirms that recipient and creation-time metadata are not encrypted.
Those facts mean encrypted message content and metadata should be considered separately. The architecture X discloses may limit routine access to message content, but the cited documents do not amount to an independent guarantee that X can never access a message under any operational, legal or recovery condition.
X’s documentation also says the current implementation is not forward secure, so compromise of relevant long-term key material would not have the same protection that a forward-secure system is designed to provide.
What independent security review exists?
X’s About Chat page links to a third-party protocol audit. Trail of Bits’ public publications index lists “X XChat” under cryptography reviews dated October 2025, with both a security-assessment report and a fix-review report.

The index confirms that those records exist; it does not, by itself, establish the reports’ findings, prove that every issue was fixed or certify XChat as secure. Specific conclusions require reading the reports themselves. The existence of an audit should therefore be treated as evidence of review, not a blanket security endorsement.

X says previous messages remain in the inbox but are not encrypted unless and until the conversation is upgraded. Moving to Chat does not automatically convert a legacy DM history into encrypted history. Message requests are likewise unencrypted until accepted and upgraded under the documented rules.
Before assuming a message is protected
- Confirm that you and the recipient have both registered for Chat.
- Check the conversation’s encryption indicator in the interface.
- Do not assume an accepted message request encrypted the earlier request text.
- Remember that metadata remains outside encryption.
Is XChat available to everyone?
Chat is documented as an available X feature, but “available” does not mean that every account can immediately exchange encrypted messages with every other account. Registration is required, and the recipient must satisfy one of X’s eligibility relationships with the sender. A non-registered recipient can still receive an unencrypted message or request where X permits it.
Availability can also differ between the X service and the X Chat app because both require registration and account eligibility. X’s current help documentation, rather than Musk’s June 2025 rollout forecast, is the appropriate reference for present behavior.
What the claim gets right—and what it leaves out
- Accurate context: Musk did announce a broader XChat rollout in June 2025 and used the phrase “Bitcoin-style encryption.”
- Documented protection: X says encrypted Chats cover message content, links, media, files and reactions.
- Important conditions: Both users must register, and recipient eligibility rules apply.
- Important exclusions: Metadata is not encrypted; message requests and pre-upgrade history are not retroactively protected.
- Security limitation: X explicitly says the current implementation is not forward secure.
- Review status: Trail of Bits lists an October 2025 assessment and fix review, but the index alone is not a certification or a summary of results.
The Bottom Line
XChat is a real, documented X feature, but Musk’s June 2025 “this week” announcement is historical and “Bitcoin-style encryption” is not a formal standard. Encrypted exchanges require registration and eligibility, exclude metadata, do not retroactively protect old messages and are explicitly not forward secure.
