Electronic Code Book (ECB) is a mode of operation for block ciphers. It encrypts each fixed-size plaintext block independently with the same key, so identical blocks produce identical ciphertext blocks. That repeatability can expose patterns in the data even when the message itself cannot be read.
What does ECB stand for?
ECB stands for Electronic Code Book. In cryptography, the term names a mode of operation for a block cipher—not a cipher algorithm by itself. NIST’s glossary lists the acronym and expanded form in its ECB glossary entry.
How does ECB encryption work?
A block cipher processes data in fixed-size blocks. ECB splits the plaintext into those blocks and encrypts each one separately using the same key. There is no linkage between one block’s encryption and another’s.
- Divide the plaintext into blocks sized for the block cipher.
- Encrypt every block independently with the same key.
- Place the resulting ciphertext blocks together to form the encrypted output.
The practical consequence is deterministic repetition: whenever two plaintext blocks are identical, their ciphertext blocks are identical under that key. A NIST-hosted textbook excerpt describes this block-by-block behavior and the information it can disclose: Network Security: Private Communication in a Public World, 3rd Edition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why can ECB reveal patterns?
Encryption can keep the contents of an individual block unreadable while still preserving visible relationships between blocks. Because repeated plaintext blocks become repeated ciphertext blocks, someone examining the encrypted message may infer repeated structures or patterns from the ciphertext. NIST’s security-policy material states the same-key repeated-block property: NIST example values and security policy material.
This leakage is about structure, not necessarily direct recovery of the original text. Whether a particular message exposes recognizable patterns depends on its data and layout; the underlying issue is that ECB does not conceal which plaintext blocks are equal.

How ECB fits among block-cipher modes
NIST Special Publication 800-38A specifies five modes for data confidentiality: ECB, Cipher Block Chaining (CBC), Cipher Feedback (CFB), Output Feedback (OFB), and Counter (CTR). The publication establishes this set of modes; their presence in the same standard does not mean they are interchangeable or that one mode is universally appropriate for every application. See the NIST SP 800-38A publication page.
| Mode | What this source set establishes |
|---|---|
| ECB | Encrypts blocks independently; identical plaintext blocks under the same key produce identical ciphertext blocks, which can disclose patterns. |
| CBC | Listed by NIST SP 800-38A as a mode for data confidentiality; the cited material here does not detail its operation. |
| CFB | Listed by NIST SP 800-38A as a mode for data confidentiality; the cited material here does not detail its operation. |
| OFB | Listed by NIST SP 800-38A as a mode for data confidentiality; the cited material here does not detail its operation. |
| CTR | Listed by NIST SP 800-38A as a mode for data confidentiality; the cited material here does not detail its operation. |
Choosing a mode requires more than knowing its name: an application must account for how it handles repeated data, what additional inputs or state it needs, and whether it requires confidentiality alone or additional protections. The cited sources establish ECB’s repeated-block leakage and the NIST mode list, but do not establish a single best choice for all uses.

What to remember about ECB
- ECB means Electronic Code Book and is a block-cipher mode.
- It encrypts each block independently using the same key.
- Identical plaintext blocks therefore result in identical ciphertext blocks.
- That visible repetition can disclose patterns or structure in encrypted data.
