Silicon microwire solar cells use arrays of tiny silicon wires to trap sunlight and collect electrical charge. Their geometry has produced striking light-absorption results and promising laboratory cells, but those figures are not interchangeable: absorption is not conversion efficiency, and a projected result is not a measured device. The best reported array-cell result in the studies covered here was 10.6% conversion efficiency on a 1 cm² laboratory cell.
How do silicon nanowire solar cells work?
Silicon microwire and nanowire cells use the same broad idea: replace a flat silicon absorber with an array of upright wires. The wires scatter and trap incoming light, helping a relatively small amount of silicon absorb sunlight. In a planar cell, the design must balance absorbing light against giving charge carriers a short route to a collecting junction. A radial-junction wire addresses that tension by placing the junction around the wire, so carriers can travel outward to the junction rather than across a thick, flat absorber.
The geometry alone does not make a good cell. The junction must be uniform, surfaces need treatment to limit carrier recombination, and fine electrodes must collect current without obstructing too much light. A 2020 review describes these as central design and scale-up challenges, alongside optimizing wire geometry for absorption. It also discusses flexible crystalline-silicon cells made with mechanically flexible microwires; flexibility is a feature of some designs, not a property established for every wire cell. Um et al., “Progress in silicon microwire solar cells” (2020).

A wire array can absorb a high share of incident light without converting that share into usable electricity. Power-conversion efficiency also depends on how effectively the device separates and collects charge, as well as its voltage and current. Keep optical absorption, carrier-collection measurements, and photovoltaic conversion efficiency distinct when comparing results.

What is the efficiency of silicon wire solar cells?
There is no single efficiency figure for silicon-wire solar cells: published values describe different devices and measurements. The strongest array-cell result in the cited studies is a 10.6% AM1.5G conversion efficiency for a 1 cm² laboratory cell. Other frequently cited numbers refer to light absorption, a single wire, or a modeled large-area possibility—not the same kind of cell result.
| Study and device | Reported result | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Kelzenberg et al., 2010; silicon wire arrays | Up to 96% peak absorption and up to 85% day-integrated absorption of above-bandgap direct sunlight, with less than 5% areal wire fraction | Optical absorption under the study’s conditions, not power-conversion efficiency. The study also reported peak external quantum efficiency of 0.89 and broadband, near-unity internal quantum efficiency for collection through a radial semiconductor/liquid junction. |
| Kelzenberg et al., 2011; single-wire radial p–n junction device | Up to 9.0% apparent photovoltaic efficiency; approximately 600 mV open-circuit voltage and fill factor above 80% | A single-wire device measurement, not a large-area array result. |
| Um et al., 2013; microwire-array cell | 10.6% AM1.5G conversion efficiency on a 1 cm² cell; 0.56 V open-circuit voltage, 25.2 mA/cm² short-circuit current density, and 75.2% fill factor | A specific laboratory cell with a 25 μm silicon absorption region and a conformal 200 nm silicon-dioxide coating. Its reported efficiency was 8.71% before coating. |
The 2011 paper also suggested that large-area arrays might exceed 17%, based on projective measurements of single wires and optoelectronic simulations. That is projected potential, not a measured large-area cell efficiency. Kelzenberg et al., “High-performance Si microwire photovoltaics” (2011). The 2013 cell’s coating and performance are reported by Um et al., “Si Microwire Solar Cells: Improved Efficiency with a Conformal SiO2 Layer” (2013).

What the 2010 absorption result does—and does not—show
In the 2010 study, arrays with less than 5% areal wire fraction reached up to 96% peak absorption and up to 85% day-integrated absorption of above-bandgap direct sunlight under the reported experimental conditions. These findings show how wire geometry can manage light with relatively little silicon. They do not mean the arrays converted 96% or 85% of sunlight into electricity. The reported quantum-efficiency measurements describe charge collection, a separate aspect of device performance. Kelzenberg et al., “Enhanced absorption and carrier collection in Si wire arrays for photovoltaic applications” (2010).
Are silicon microwire solar cells more efficient?
Not on the basis of these results alone. The studies establish useful optical behavior and several laboratory-device measurements, but they do not provide a like-for-like comparison showing that microwire cells outperform conventional commercial silicon cells. The 10.6% result belongs to a particular 1 cm² microwire device; it should not be compared as if it were a current commercial module specification.

For context, the 2025 edition of the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables lists a 27.4 ± 0.4% result for a conventional crystalline-silicon cell, measured in September 2024. That is not a microwire-cell result, and a cell figure is not a module rating. Green et al., “Solar Cell Efficiency Tables (Version 66)” (2025).

They offer a possible materials advantage, not proof of cheaper panels. Strong absorption with a low wire fraction suggests that an absorber could use less silicon, but the available studies do not establish manufacturing cost, production yield, throughput, or a lower installed-panel price. Fabrication at scale also has to deliver consistent wire geometry, uniform radial junctions, effective surface treatment, and precise electrical contacts. A review of large-scale silicon-nanowire fabrication discusses these practical prerequisites rather than establishing a commercial cost advantage. Zhang, “Large-Scale Fabrication of Silicon Nanowires for Solar Energy Applications” (2017).

Are silicon microwire solar cells commercially available?
The cited literature establishes a research approach and laboratory demonstrations, not a fielded commercial microwire-panel architecture. A 2020 review frames high efficiency as a development challenge, while a 2026 perspective surveys contending silicon photovoltaic technologies without establishing commercial availability of microwire arrays. These sources do not prove that no product is sold anywhere; they do not support treating microwire cells as an established commercial panel option. The 2020 review and the 2026 silicon-PV industry perspective.
