Efficient Computer and GlobalFoundries announced a partnership on August 29, 2024, to bring a processor based on Efficient’s Fabric architecture to market using GF’s 22FDX platform. The agreement involves a processor designed to use a manufacturing platform with embedded MRAM; it is not evidence that Efficient has shipped an MRAM chip. Efficient targeted customer sampling by summer 2025, but the available announcements do not establish whether that milestone was met.
What the GlobalFoundries partnership covers
The companies described a plan to combine Efficient Computer’s Fabric processor architecture with GlobalFoundries’ 22FDX manufacturing platform. The announcement was about developing and bringing a processor to market, not a standalone MRAM product or a confirmed production order. The platform’s embedded MRAM capability is relevant to the partnership, but details of the specific processor’s memory implementation were not provided in the announcement.
Efficient said it was working with select customers and aimed to begin customer sampling by summer 2025. That target date has passed, and the cited announcements do not confirm that samples were delivered, that the processor entered volume production, or that it is commercially available. No named customer deployments or production volumes are established.
What 22FDX embedded MRAM means
GF established platform capability
GlobalFoundries said in February 2020 that embedded MRAM on its 22nm FD-SOI 22FDX platform had entered production. GF described the memory as a potential alternative to embedded NOR flash for high-volume designs and identified uses including IoT, microcontrollers, automotive, and edge AI. Memory roles and historical claims
In a 2016 announcement, GF said 22FDX eMRAM could serve both for code storage, a role commonly associated with flash, and as working memory, a role associated with SRAM. GF also claimed write speeds 1,000 times faster and endurance 1,000 times greater than non-volatile-memory offerings available at that time. GF announced Auto Grade 1-ready eMRAM availability on an enhanced FDX platform in March 2026. This is evidence of continued development of FDX embedded memory, but the announcement concerns GF’s broader automotive platform; it does not confirm Efficient’s chip schedule, memory configuration, or qualification. How to interpret Efficient’s efficiency figures
Efficient’s 2024 announcement claimed “up to 166x” greater energy efficiency than industry-standard embedded CPUs and “up to 99% lower DC power” for its architecture without compromising performance. These are vendor claims, not independently validated results in the cited materials. The 166x figure is tied to a specified 5×5 convolution: Efficient said its low-power SoC and E0 processor ran the same C program and that the two measurements were made directly on a lab bench. Its comparison with an accelerator instead used that accelerator’s advertised MLPerf Tiny 1.1 figures.
