Edison is a programmable educational robot designed to make coding visible: students can give it instructions, then watch it move, sense its surroundings and respond. Its design combines screen-free activities, browser-based programming that progresses from blocks to text, and options for building with compatible construction systems. Microbric positions Edison as accessible for classroom budgets, but its published materials do not disclose production costs or establish an independent price comparison.

What is the Edison robot?

Microbric describes Edison as a hands-on STEM and coding platform for classrooms, rather than a single-purpose toy. The company says the Edison brand was released in 2014. Its educational purpose is practical: learners can connect instructions to physical behavior by programming a robot and seeing the result in the real world. That is the manufacturer’s stated approach; the cited product materials are not independent evaluations of learning outcomes. Meet Edison overview · Microbric’s Edison site

How does Edison teach coding?

Edison offers several routes into programming, so the same robot can be used with screen-free activities and with progressively more explicit coding environments. Microbric says its programming options are free and browser-accessible. The current options listed by the company are:

  • Barcode programming: Students scan printed barcodes with Edison to activate pre-set programs. This provides a screen-free starting point.
  • Card coding: A screen-free approach using coding cards, listed by the manufacturer as a programming route.
  • EdBlocks: A graphical, drag-and-drop block environment.
  • EdScratch: A vertical block-based environment built around a Scratch-style approach.
  • EdPy: A text-based programming environment for learners ready to work with written code.

These are different entry points, not separate robots. Students can move from trying a pre-set behavior to assembling instructions and eventually writing text-based code. The company’s original environment, EdWare, has been retired, so it should not be treated as a current option. Edison programming software

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What does the physical design let students do?

The robot’s movement and sensing give programs a physical output. The technical overview describes a programming-transfer method for Edison V3 on iOS in which the device screen flashes information that the robot receives with its line-tracking sensor. It also documents LEGO compatibility: after the wheels are removed, LEGO cross-axles can be fitted, and multiple Edisons can be stacked for larger constructions. Those details make construction part of the platform, not just a separate coding activity. Edison technical information

EdCreate is an optional building extension

For more structured construction, Microbric offers EdCreate, a 115-piece interlocking construction system. The manufacturer says one kit supports five named EdBuilds as well as additional engineering and design challenges. This is a product specification from Microbric, not an independent assessment. EdCreate is an optional extension; Edison itself is the central product. EdCreate construction kit · EdCreate teaching guide

How is Edison set up for classroom use?

Microbric describes Edison as compact, durable and rechargeable, with school use in mind. Materials for Edison V3 specify an integrated rechargeable battery and an EdCharger designed to charge and store five robots at once. The charger is a separate classroom-logistics detail, not proof that every robot listing includes one. Before buying, check the specific generation, what charging equipment is included, and whether accessories are compatible with that model. Edison V3 announcement · Edison teaching resources

Is Edison affordable?

“Anyone can afford” reflects the product’s accessibility positioning, not a documented cost analysis. Microbric says Edison is intended to fit classroom budgets, and its V3 announcement included launch pricing: US$59 for a single unit and classroom bundle pricing as low as US$38 per robot. Those are historical launch claims, not current prices. The company’s home page displayed AUD $99 including GST on October 4, 2026, but that listing is market- and time-sensitive, and its model details should be checked before purchase. They support the narrower conclusion that Microbric positions Edison for budget-conscious education and offers free programming tools; they do not prove why it can be sold at a particular price or that it is cheaper than alternatives in every market.

What to check before choosing a model

  • Learning path: Decide whether students need barcode or card activities, blocks, or a text-based environment.
  • Building needs: Check whether LEGO-compatible construction is sufficient or whether the optional EdCreate kit suits the planned activities.
  • Classroom setup: Confirm charging arrangements, generation compatibility and what the listing includes, especially for a class set.
  • Local price: Compare current unit or bundle price in your market and verify the model and included accessories rather than relying on historical launch figures.
