Yes. You can use Chrome DevTools MCP with Microsoft Edge because Edge implements the Chrome DevTools Protocol. The practical choices are to let the MCP server launch an isolated Edge profile, connect to an already running Edge profile with remote debugging, or attach to a WebView2 host. Launch mode is safer for routine work; auto-connect preserves sign-ins but exposes the selected profile to your AI agent.
What an Edge MCP server actually is
chrome-devtools-mcp is an MCP server designed to let an MCP-capable coding agent inspect and control a live Chromium browser. Although its name says Chrome, Microsoft documents using it with Edge and WebView2 by pointing the server at the appropriate executable or user-data directory. Edge DevTools Protocol APIs are compatible with Chrome DevTools Protocol APIs, so the server can use the same inspection and debugging model.
The MCP server is not an Edge extension. It is a Node.js process that starts Edge or discovers a debugging endpoint, then exposes browser-inspection tools to clients such as Visual Studio Code with GitHub Copilot, Copilot CLI, Claude Code and Cursor.
Choose the right connection mode

Use launch mode unless the test genuinely requires existing state. Never point auto-connect at a personal or production profile when a disposable test profile will do.

Prerequisites
- Node.js, preferably the latest LTS release, with npm available on your PATH.
- Microsoft Edge Stable, Beta, Dev or Canary, depending on the channel you need to test.
- An MCP-capable client, such as VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Copilot CLI, Claude Code or Cursor.
- A test URL and, for authenticated testing, a dedicated Edge profile or account.
Keep the Node.js and Edge installations on the same machine unless your client explicitly supports forwarding the MCP process and browser endpoint remotely.
Option 1: let the MCP server launch Edge
This is the clearest starting point because the server controls the browser lifecycle. Find the Edge executable for your operating system and pass it to npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest through the client’s MCP configuration.
Typical executable paths

Use the path that exists on your machine; channel-specific installations can have different locations.

Create or edit the workspace or user mcp.json used by VS Code, then add a server entry like this:

}On macOS or Linux, replace the Windows path. If your client uses a top-level mcpServers object instead of VS Code’s servers object, keep the same command and arguments in that client’s format. Copilot CLI uses an mcp-config.json file; Claude Code, Cursor and other clients generally document an equivalent mcpServers entry.

Verify the launch
- Restart or reload the MCP client after saving its configuration.
- Ask the agent to list its Chrome DevTools MCP tools.
- Ask it to open a harmless test page and report the page title, URL and visible headings.
- Confirm that a new Edge window or profile appears rather than your everyday browser session.
If the browser does not open, run the same npx command in a terminal to expose path or npm errors, then check the troubleshooting section below.
Option 2: auto-connect to a running Edge profile
Auto-connect is useful when the page is already authenticated or populated with test data. Edge must be started with remote debugging enabled, and the MCP server must be given the matching user-data directory. Puppeteer then reads the DevToolsActivePort file to discover the browser’s WebSocket endpoint.
Safe operating procedure
- Close the Edge instance that owns the profile you intend to use, if required by your channel and startup method.
- Start Edge with remote debugging enabled and an explicit, dedicated user-data directory. Do not reuse your normal personal profile.
- Configure the MCP server with
--autoConnectand--user-data-dirpointing to that directory. - Connect from the MCP client and ask the agent to identify the current tab before performing any action.
The exact command-line switch used to enable remote debugging can vary by Edge release and operating system. Follow Microsoft’s current Edge remote-debugging guidance for your installed channel rather than copying a path or port from an unrelated setup.

]Use a real absolute directory. The directory must be the one from which the debuggable Edge instance was launched, not merely a parent folder containing unrelated profiles.
Connect to a WebView2 application
WebView2 embeds Edge rendering inside a Windows host application. Enable remote debugging for the host, locate the WebView2 user-data directory (its name ends in EBWebView), and use the same auto-connect pattern with --user-data-dir. The MCP server can then inspect the embedded page through the DevTools endpoint.

Because WebView2 state belongs to the host application, avoid changing data in a production desktop app while experimenting. A test installation or separate Windows user account makes recovery easier.
Use Edge through Playwright instead
If your objective is accessibility-tree automation, browser workflows or end-to-end tests rather than DevTools inspection, Playwright offers a separate connection path. Its official browser channels include msedge, msedge-beta, msedge-dev and msedge-canary. Playwright can also connect to a Chrome DevTools Protocol endpoint. This gives you a Playwright automation surface; Chrome DevTools MCP gives your MCP client DevTools-oriented inspection and debugging tools. Select the tool surface that matches the task instead of treating the two integrations as interchangeable.

- Cookies and accounts: auto-connect can expose cookies and logged-in pages through the active session.
- Page data: JavaScript-accessible content, local storage and open tabs may be visible to the agent.
- Destructive actions: an agent with control of a real session could submit forms, change settings or delete data.
- Network reach: pages available to the browser, including internal test systems, may become reachable through agent actions.
Use a trusted MCP client and a profile created specifically for the task. Prefer launch mode with a clean profile for public-page inspection. If authentication is necessary, limit the account’s permissions, remove unrelated tabs and close the debugging session when finished.
Troubleshooting
“npx” or package-not-found errors
Confirm Node.js and npm are installed and that the terminal used by your MCP client can find them. Run node --version and npm --version, then retry npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest. Corporate npm policies or a restricted network can also prevent package retrieval.
Edge does not launch
The executable path is wrong, points to a directory rather than the binary, or uses quoting that your client’s JSON parser changes. Verify the file exists and escape backslashes in JSON. Test the path directly outside the MCP client.

Auto-connect cannot find a browser
Check that Edge was started with remote debugging, that the MCP server’s --user-data-dir exactly matches the running instance, and that the profile is not still locked by another Edge process. Shut down duplicate instances and start the dedicated profile again.

Close unrelated tabs in the dedicated profile, then ask the agent to enumerate open pages and identify the target by URL before interacting. For repeatable tests, launch a clean profile instead of relying on whichever tab was last active.
WebView2 produces no targets
Remote debugging may not be enabled for the host, or the selected directory may not be the WebView2 directory ending in EBWebView. Confirm the host application is running and that its data directory belongs to the instance being debugged.
Pages are blank or incomplete
Wait for navigation and dynamic content to finish before inspecting. Check whether the page requires authentication, blocks automation, depends on a network reachable only from a corporate environment, or renders content inside a frame. A blank result is a page or environment problem, not proof that Edge and the protocol are incompatible.

- Use a dedicated profile so extensions, cached redirects and old tabs do not change results.
- Keep one browser instance per test purpose; parallel agents should not compete for one profile.
- Record the Edge channel, Node.js version, URL and connection mode with test output.
- Wait for a meaningful page condition, such as a visible heading or completed navigation, instead of using an arbitrary short delay.
- Close the MCP client and browser cleanly so the DevTools endpoint and profile lock are released.
Launch mode generally produces the most reproducible run. Auto-connect is more realistic for signed-in workflows but introduces state, privacy and tab-selection variables that you must control.
