ECIA’s June 2023 date-code guide recommends that buyers stop applying broad, default date-code limits to electronic components ordered from manufacturers and their authorized distributors. It does not say age is irrelevant in every application: ECIA allows technically justified exceptions and advises buyers to assess supplier handling, storage, warranty, and quality controls. The guide is ECIA GIPC Knowledge Document #101; confirm its revision status with ECIA before treating the June 2023 edition as the latest.
What ECIA’s date-code guide is—and what it recommends
The Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA) published Global Industry Practices Committee (GIPC) Knowledge Document #101, Managing Date Code Restrictions on Orders for Electronic Components, in June 2023. It supersedes a NEDA document published in December 2002. ECIA members—component manufacturers and distributors—recommend that customers avoid general date-code restrictions when ordering through manufacturers and their authorized distributors. ECIA’s GIPC #101 document is the primary source for the recommendation and its exceptions.
A general restriction might require every delivered component to carry a date code newer than a cutoff, regardless of part, application, or supplier handling. ECIA argues that such blanket limits can delay order entry and fulfillment, disrupt normal first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory use, and add costs that do not improve the product. Its position is that properly packaged and handled inventory held by manufacturers and authorized distributors will meet the manufacturers’ electrical and solderability specifications, and that component warranties are not affected by age at sale. Those are ECIA’s statements about properly controlled inventory—not a guarantee for every component or every storage history.
Does an old date code mean a component should be rejected?
Not by itself, under ECIA’s guidance. A date code indicates when a component was produced according to the manufacturer’s coding practice; it does not alone establish how the part was stored, whether its packaging remains suitable, or whether it meets the needs of a particular design. Buyers should evaluate the supplier’s control of packaging and storage and the component’s technical requirements rather than use age as a universal proxy for condition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a procurement recommendation, not a universal suitability rule or a claim that every part is interchangeable. A component may have an application-specific requirement, a demonstrated sensitivity to lot variation, or a suspected issue that warrants further investigation. Those circumstances can justify a narrower, technically grounded request.
When a date-code requirement may be justified
GIPC #101 identifies three reasonable grounds for an exception. ECIA says buyers should discuss exceptions individually with manufacturers and distributors and provide a technical basis. It warns that a request may add cost or delay shipment.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Demonstrated design sensitivity: The design is demonstrably intolerant of lot-specific electrical variation, even when components remain within the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Testing a suspected variation: The customer suspects component variation and needs parts with other date codes to support immediate production testing.
- A specific technical requirement: Another defined technical need requires date-code control.
Where possible, describe the relevant part, technical concern, and required outcome instead of imposing the same cutoff across an entire order or product family. A specific request gives the supplier a basis to assess availability, cost, and timing.
What to check about a component supplier
ECIA’s recommendation does not remove the need to qualify the supply chain. For orders through manufacturers or authorized distributors, assess whether the supplier can:

- Support the product warranty.
- Distribute and follow product change notices, recalls, and quality alerts.
- Report component issues to manufacturers and quarantine suspect stock.
- Review, quote, and meet technically justified date-code requirements.
These checks focus on controls and traceability that age alone cannot establish. They also give buyers a practical basis for deciding whether a date-code exception is needed.
Date-code charts and purchasing restrictions are different
A marking reference helps decode a date code; GIPC #101 addresses whether customers should impose date-code limits when buying. They answer separate questions.

ECIA’s Weekly Date Codes resource identifies production year and week and lists annual charts through 2026. ECIA says the program follows EIA-476-A, EIA-476-B, and MIL-STD-1285 criteria. A chart can help interpret a mark, but it does not establish a component’s storage conditions or decide whether a purchasing restriction is technically warranted.
ECIA NIGP 117.00, dated January 2015, addresses date-code marking format and traceability. It describes a four-digit YYWW format: the first two digits give the year and the last two the week. Its definition of week 1 is based on the first Thursday of the year. The production milestone underlying a code can differ by manufacturer; examples in the guideline include encapsulation, fabrication, packaging, or inspection. Do not assume that identical-looking codes mean every manufacturer dates components from the same production step. See ECIA’s NIGP 117.00 guideline for the marking guidance.

What is known about the guide’s current status
ECIA’s PDF is hosted, and its separate weekly-code page lists a 2026 chart, but neither establishes that GIPC #101 has been revised or remains the current policy document. In a release dated April 22, 2025, ECIA announced a related educational initiative involving its GIPC and other industry participants, including IPC, JEDEC, and EMSNOW.com. The announcement describes a planned webinar series and names Dan Deisz of Rochester Electronics as a presenter; it shows continued discussion, not a formal revision of GIPC #101. Check with ECIA for the document’s latest revision status before relying on the June 2023 edition as current. EE Times reported the guide’s publication on June 14, 2023.
