EasyOS 6.0 “Scarthgap” was a surprisingly capable 2024 release for a lightweight Linux distribution: it paired a broad set of desktop and creative applications with a drive-image workflow that makes USB trials straightforward. The tradeoff is important: booting from removable media is simple, but installing to an internal drive requires manual partition and bootloader work. EasyOS describes itself as experimental, so this is a retrospective look at the release—not a claim that it is the best choice for every desktop or the current version to download.
What EasyOS 6.0 introduced
Barry Kauler announced EasyOS Scarthgap 6.0 on June 18, 2024. It began a new release series built with packages compiled using OpenEmbedded’s Scarthgap release and the project’s meta-quirky layer. The release announcement says that layer provided approximately 240 additional package build recipes; that is a project figure, not a measure of application performance. The announcement listed Linux kernel 6.6.32 for the June 2024 release. That version belongs to the original 6.0 release and should not be read as a current kernel version. The announcement also described OpenEmbedded/Yocto Scarthgap as an LTS series supported until April 2028; that was the support horizon stated in 2024, not a fresh confirmation of its status today. What comes with the desktop
EasyOS 6.0’s application selection is one of its strongest practical attractions. The release announcement lists tools spanning everyday work, graphics, development, and media:
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
- Office and personal organization: LibreOffice, Grisbi, NoteCase, Osmo, Planner, and Symphytum.
- Graphics and creative work: GIMP, Inkscape, Dia, Flowblade, and SolveSpace.
- System and development tools: Chromium, Celluloid, Geany, and GParted.
This range gives a newcomer a useful set of applications to explore without first assembling a desktop from scratch. It does not establish how well each program performs on a particular computer, and no benchmark is claimed here. The list is based on the 6.0 release announcement.
How the drive-image workflow works
EasyOS is distributed as a drive image rather than a conventional ISO installer. For a trial, the 6.0 announcement describes writing the image to a USB flash drive and booting from it. The older official technical overview also identifies SD cards, HDDs, and SSDs as possible image targets. The sources do not establish a minimum USB capacity or guarantee that a given computer will boot successfully. 6.0 announcement; EasyOS technical overview.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
A USB flash drive is a convenient route for trying the image, but it is not bundled with EasyOS and is not required for every installation. Check the project’s instructions and your computer’s boot options before writing an image; do not assume compatibility for hardware that has not been tested.
Internal installation takes more work
EasyOS does not provide a graphical installer for internal-drive installation. The current official installation guide says installation requires an ext4 partition, so readers expecting a mainstream installer to handle partitioning and bootloader setup should account for this extra manual work. Follow the project’s current instructions for preparing the partition and configuring the bootloader rather than relying on old walkthroughs. EasyOS internal-drive installation guide.

Is the “surprisingly good” verdict fair?
The phrase “Surprisingly Good Release” is an editorial judgment in the review title, not an independently established performance result. The case for the praise is concrete: EasyOS 6.0 combined a substantial built-in application selection with a bootable image workflow that lets curious users try it from removable media. That makes the release interesting to people who value experimentation and a pre-populated desktop.
The qualification is equally central. EasyOS’s official release notes call the project experimental and say some components remain under development or at beta quality. That is a meaningful caveat for anyone considering it as a dependable primary operating system. EasyOS release notes.

Should you download EasyOS 6.0 now?
EasyOS 6.0 is best understood as a specific 2024 release review, not the project’s recommended starting point today. The official release notes later recommend the Daedalus series for new users and document subsequent Scarthgap maintenance releases. For a current download, consult the project’s release notes and series information rather than treating the original 6.0 image as the default choice.
For readers evaluating the 6.0 release itself, the practical decision is straightforward: it is appealing if you want to explore a lightweight, application-rich Linux desktop from a drive image and are comfortable with experimental software. If your priority is a guided internal installation or a system whose stability is established for everyday use, its manual installation model and experimental status deserve careful consideration.
