East of Eden is Netflix’s seven-episode limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel, with Zoe Kazan as writer and executive producer and Florence Pugh playing Cathy Ames. The setup shifts attention toward Cathy and expands the story beyond the 1955 film’s telling. Whether that focus makes for a daring new perspective—and whether Pugh is sensational in the role—are judgments for viewers to make from the performances and the series itself.

What is Netflix’s East of Eden about?

The series follows Cathy Ames and the Trask family across generations, setting their story against the darker side of the California dream. Netflix describes the drama as beginning in the early 1900s, when an independent woman drives a rift between two brothers. Its seven episodes give the adaptation a serial form for telling a story that spans two generations.

That premise puts Cathy near the center of the series rather than treating her only as one piece of the Trask family saga. The extent to which the show makes her motives and perspective feel newly legible is an important question for the adaptation to answer.

How does Zoe Kazan’s version approach Steinbeck’s story?

Steinbeck’s novel was published in 1952. The Associated Press describes Kazan’s series as a fuller telling than Elia Kazan’s 1955 film, with more attention to Pugh’s Cathy. Elia Kazan was Zoe Kazan’s grandfather; that connection makes the adaptation’s relationship to the earlier film especially notable, but it does not by itself establish the series’ artistic success.

The format creates room to follow a multigenerational story at greater length than a feature film. The key comparison is not simply which version covers more of the novel, but whether the series uses that scope to develop Cathy and the Trask family with complexity. A close viewing can assess how much of Steinbeck’s story the series retains, what it changes, and whether Cathy’s expanded presence deepens the family drama.

Florence Pugh as Cathy, with Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist as the Trask brothers

Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, while Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist plays Charles Trask. That casting places the central family conflict alongside the series’ emphasis on Cathy. Calling Pugh’s performance “sensational” is a critical judgment, not a production fact; it should rest on what her choices convey about Cathy and how those choices shape the audience’s understanding of the character.

The brothers’ performances matter to the same question. Their dynamic can be judged in relation to Cathy’s influence and the family’s divisions, rather than as a separate subplot. The official cast information establishes who plays whom; the quality of the actors’ chemistry and characterization is for the viewer to evaluate.

Where and when can you watch East of Eden?

Netflix lists the series as a 2026 limited series and classifies it TV-MA. The New Zealand Film Commission and the Associated Press identify October 1, 2026, as its premiere date. Netflix is the confirmed platform; availability can vary by region, so check the live Netflix title page for your location.

The New Zealand Film Commission says the production filmed extensively across New Zealand, using its locations to recreate early twentieth-century America. That account establishes New Zealand as a major filming base without specifying individual locations.
