The easiest all-purpose Windows screenshot shortcut is Windows logo key + Shift + S. It opens the Snipping Tool overlay so you can capture a rectangle, freeform area, window, or the entire screen, then annotate, copy, save, or share the result. It works on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and does not require an additional app or purchase.

How do I take a screenshot on Windows?
Use Windows + Shift + S
- Arrange the page, window, or desktop exactly as you want it captured.
- Press Windows + Shift + S together. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- Drag over the required area for rectangular or freeform mode. In window mode, select a window; full-screen mode captures immediately.
- Select the notification that appears to open the image in Snipping Tool.
- Use the editor to annotate or crop, run Text actions (OCR) when available, then copy, save, or share the result.
The snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window automatically. Press Ctrl + C to copy it again, or Ctrl + S to save it as an image file.
Choose the right Snipping Tool mode
- Rectangular: Best for a precise portion of a webpage, document, or app.
- Freeform: Draw an irregular outline around an object.
- Window: Capture one app window without manually trimming surrounding content.
- Full screen: Capture every visible display at once.
Where are screenshots saved on Windows?
Images made with Windows + Shift + S, Alt + Print Screen, or Print Screen initially go to the clipboard and Snipping Tool. Open the notification, then press Ctrl + S and select a folder and format.
Windows + Print Screen saves without that extra step. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is redirected to OneDrive, the Screenshots folder may be under the OneDrive Pictures location instead.

How to capture a window or the entire display
Active window only
Click the window so it has focus, then press Alt + Print Screen. Paste the result with Ctrl + V into Paint, an email, a document, or another image-capable app. This method does not automatically create a file.
Entire screen to the clipboard
Press Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V. This is useful when you want to edit or place the image immediately in another application.
Entire screen to a file
Press Windows + Print Screen. The display briefly dims and Windows writes a PNG image to Pictures/Screenshots. This is the fastest option when you need a file immediately and do not need annotations.
Editing, text extraction, and sharing
Open a snip in Snipping Tool to draw with a pen or highlighter, crop the canvas, and save a copy. On supported installations, Text actions can recognize text in the image so you can copy it rather than retype it. You can then attach the saved image to a message or use Snipping Tool’s share command.

For a quick paste, leave the image on the clipboard and press Ctrl + V in the destination app. Clipboard captures are temporary: save the image if you will need it after restarting or replacing clipboard contents.
Keyboard problems and Windows variations
No obvious Print Screen key
Compact keyboards and laptops may label the key PrtSc, PrtScn, or combine it with another function. Try the keyboard’s Fn modifier. Microsoft also documents hardware-dependent alternatives such as Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on some devices. The Windows + Shift + S shortcut remains the simplest route because it does not depend on a dedicated Print Screen key.
Windows 11 Copilot+ features
On Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, Snipping Tool may include Perfect Screenshot and Color picker. Microsoft identifies both as Copilot+ PC features, so their availability depends on the computer and installed Windows version.
Multiple monitors
Full-screen capture includes the display context selected by the capture mode and Windows configuration. For a single application on a multi-monitor setup, use window snip or click the target window before pressing Alt + Print Screen. If the result includes unwanted monitors, switch to rectangular or window mode and select only the required area.

Common screenshot problems and fixes
Nothing appears after pressing the shortcut
- Press all three keys together: Windows logo, Shift, and S.
- Release any stuck modifier key, then try again.
- Use Start search to open Snipping Tool directly and select New.
- If a managed work computer blocks capture, check with the administrator; security policies can restrict screenshots in protected apps.
The image is missing from a message or document
The capture may still be on the clipboard. Press Ctrl + V in the destination. If another copy operation replaced it, repeat the capture and save it with Ctrl + S before switching apps.
The automatic file is not in Pictures/Screenshots
Confirm that you used Windows + Print Screen, not plain Print Screen. Then check whether Windows or OneDrive moved the Pictures folder. Use File Explorer search for recent PNG files if the folder has been redirected.
A webpage is taller than the visible screen
These shortcuts capture visible pixels, not an entire scrolling webpage. Use the website’s own full-page print or capture feature, a browser extension, or an automated screenshot service when you need content below the fold. Make sure you have permission to capture private or restricted material.
A protected video or banking page is black
Some apps intentionally block screen capture or use protected rendering. Windows shortcuts cannot override that protection. Use an authorized export, download, or print function instead.

When the built-in method is enough—and when it is not
Snipping Tool is the best choice for occasional screenshots, quick annotations, OCR, and captures that only need the visible desktop. It is free with Windows and requires no account.
Consider a specialized workflow when you need repeatable captures of URLs, full-page pages with lazy-loaded images, CSS or JavaScript changes, custom headers or cookies, a fixed device viewport, PDFs, bulk jobs, webhooks, or an API integrated into tests and documentation. Browser automation gives control but requires installing and maintaining a browser, drivers, timing logic, and cleanup rules.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept cookie banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Available controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for selectors or network idle, blocking ads or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

Windows + Shift + S saves through Snipping Tool, so you choose a location each time with Save As. Automatic Windows + Print Screen files follow the Pictures folder location, which can be redirected through Windows or OneDrive settings.
What is the difference between a screenshot and a screen recording?
A screenshot is a still image. On Windows 11, Windows + Shift + R opens Snipping Tool’s video capture for a selected region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a menu that disappears when I press a key?
Open Snipping Tool first, set a delay from its capture controls, open the menu during the delay, and let the capture occur.
Which image format should I use?
PNG is the practical default for text and interface screenshots. Choose JPEG when a smaller file matters more than lossless sharpness.
