Early interactive short isolation is an LVS debugging workflow: inspect shorted layout paths as soon as LVS results are available, test candidate fixes virtually, and run targeted checks on selected nets before the project’s required full-chip signoff. Siemens EDA describes this workflow through Calibre RVE Interactive Short Isolation with Calibre nmLVS Recon. The capability and speed claims discussed here are vendor descriptions, not independent benchmark findings.
What early interactive short isolation does
Layout-versus-schematic (LVS) verification checks whether a physical layout’s connectivity matches its schematic. A short is an unintended connection between nets; the described use cases include power or ground networks and signal lines. In dense, hierarchical layouts with multiple interconnect layers, tracing the physical path behind a reported short can be difficult.
In an EE Times Partner Content article published December 4, 2024, Ritu Walia describes adding the “SI” (short isolation) keyword to the Mask SVDB Directory statement in the rule file. The article says Calibre RVE can then highlight shorted layout segments and organize them in a tree view. It also describes reviewing multiple paths, simulating candidate fixes without changing the layout, verifying the virtual fixes, and saving results in a separate database. These are descriptions of the vendor’s flow, not independently tested findings. Read the EE Times article.
How to use the workflow
- Run LVS and produce results. Use the project’s existing rule deck and run setup to generate the data needed for inspection.
- Enable short isolation. As described in the EE Times article, add the “SI” keyword to the Mask SVDB Directory statement in the rule file.
- Inspect the reported paths in Calibre RVE. Use the highlighted layout segments and tree view to follow the short paths and identify the net or segment that needs attention.
- Prioritize an issue. Focus investigation on the problematic net or path most relevant to the design’s connectivity risk rather than manually chasing every hierarchical connection in sequence.
- Test a candidate fix virtually. The article says the flow can simulate and verify a proposed fix without modifying the source layout, and retain the outcome in a separate database.
- Run a targeted check if appropriate. The described flow supports partial LVS checks on selected nets and launching LVS from the debug GUI. Multithreading and distributed processing are mentioned as run options, not as measured guarantees of faster completion.
- Complete the project’s required verification. Treat the targeted check as a debugging aid, not a substitute for whatever full-chip LVS and signoff process the project requires.
What this can improve—and what it does not establish
The proposed advantage is a tighter debug loop: engineers can inspect paths, try a fix, and perform a focused check without repeatedly switching between graphical and command-line environments or rerunning full-chip LVS after every iteration. The article also frames interactive path review as a way to reduce the burden of inspecting many hierarchical connections. These are vendor-presented workflow benefits; the source does not establish a universal time saving or show that a particular signoff step can be skipped.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The article says manual inspection can take several days in large, complex designs, but it provides no study or benchmark behind that duration. It also cites more than 15,000 short paths in 5 nm designs, attributing the figure to unnamed industry conference surveys. Because the surveys, sample, and method are not identified, treat that number as an example reported by the article, not an industry-wide rate or an expected count for a specific project. Design density, hierarchy, and interconnect complexity are relevant alongside process node.
How to assess it for your verification setup
The available sources describe one Siemens EDA flow, not a head-to-head comparison of LVS tools. If you are deciding whether it fits your team, evaluate it against your current debugging process on representative designs and rule decks.

- Can you run checks on selected nets before a full-chip run, and are the boundaries of those checks clear?
- Does the interface make each short path easy to enumerate and trace across hierarchy and interconnect layers?
- Can you test candidate fixes without editing the source layout, and retain those results separately?
- Does the debug environment fit the team’s existing layout-viewing and command-line workflow?
- How does it perform with your design, rules, compute resources, and parallelization settings?
- For any claimed runtime or productivity gain, what design, hardware, baseline, run configuration, and measured endpoint support the claim?
Siemens’ technical-paper landing page quotes Joe Sawicki: “You get Calibre signoff accuracy, but 10X faster.” The page does not provide the benchmark setup, comparison baseline, design, or conditions for that figure, so it should not be read as a guaranteed speedup. The landing page presents the vendor’s framing, not independent validation. See Siemens’ Calibre nmLVS Recon page.
