A tip may be too large if it creates a compressed, pressured or uncomfortable feeling, but discomfort alone does not prove that size is the cause. Check that the earbud is inserted as its maker recommends, then try another included tip size. The right fit should feel comfortable, stay secure and provide an appropriate seal—without pain.
Signs an earbud tip may be too large
- Pressure or compression: The tip feels as though it is pressing too firmly against your ear.
- Discomfort during ordinary wear: The feeling persists while you are wearing the earbud normally, rather than occurring only as you adjust it.
- A poor overall fit: You cannot find a comfortable position that also feels stable and provides a suitable seal.
These are reasons to reassess the fit, not a diagnosis. Placement, the shape of the earbud body, skin irritation or another ear problem can also cause discomfort. Earache has several possible causes; the NHS explains this in its earache guidance.
How to check the fit
- Follow the instructions for your exact model. Read the maker’s insertion guidance and position the earbud as directed. Poor placement can feel uncomfortable, affect stability or interfere with the seal. See Apple’s AirPods Pro ear-tip guidance, Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro wearing guidance or Sony’s earbud fit guidance, as applicable.
- Assess comfort during normal use. Notice whether the tip feels compressed or uncomfortable once correctly positioned. Apple recommends trying a smaller size if an AirPods Pro tip feels too large or uncomfortable. The best size may differ between your left and right ears.
- Check stability and seal as well as pressure. A comfortable tip should stay secure during ordinary movement and provide an appropriate seal. If your model offers a fit or seal test, use it as an additional check—not as a substitute for comfort.
- Try another included size. Change one ear at a time if that helps you compare, and reassess comfort, stability and seal. Sony advises trying larger or smaller tips to find a comfortable, snug fit. A smaller tip is not automatically better: if it leaves a gap or feels insecure, it may be too small.
- Stop if wearing the earbuds causes pain or skin irritation. Do not push a painful earbud farther into your ear. Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor if pain or skin irritation occurs.
What earbud fit tests can tell you
Some supported earbuds offer software-based checks that assess fit, seal or sound performance. Apple describes an Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro generations 1 and 2 and an Acoustic Seal Test for generation 3, subject to supported software conditions. Samsung also documents fit tests for certain Galaxy Buds; availability depends on the model and device.
A test can help identify whether the seal is suitable under the test conditions. It does not establish that a tip will remain comfortable over time, and not every earbud has such a feature. Follow the current instructions for your exact model. Apple’s AirPods Pro ear-tip instructions and Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro guidance describe their respective model-specific options.

When to consider replacement tips
If none of the included sizes feels comfortable and secure, or a tip is damaged, a replacement set in another size may help. Before buying, check that the replacement is compatible with your exact earbud model: tip shape and attachment can vary. Apple identifies replacement tips for AirPods Pro, while Samsung and Sony advise trying different sizes for supported products. Their instructions are available from Apple, Samsung and Sony. Do not assume that a tip intended for another model will fit.

Size labels are useful for comparing the options supplied for a particular model, but they do not determine which tip will suit your ears. Judge each option by four things:

- Comfort: Does it avoid painful or excessive pressure?
- Stability: Does it stay in place during ordinary movement?
- Seal and sound: Does it provide the appropriate seal for the earbud?
- Compatibility: Is it designed for your exact earbud model?
Use the smallest size only if it still feels secure and provides a suitable seal. If no size meets those checks, stop using a painful fit rather than forcing it.
