If you want a straightforward starting point, choose DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS (2025), the current entry Koei Tecmo describes as a return to the series’ roots. If you want to follow the franchise’s western release order, begin with DYNASTY WARRIORS 2 (2000)—not a game called Dynasty Warriors 1—and continue through DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 (2018). Xtreme Legends and Empires are optional branches, not required steps.
Dynasty Warriors games in western release order
Koei Tecmo’s official history gives the western-numbered main series chronology below. The franchise is set during China’s Three Kingdoms period; its Japanese and western numbering do not line up at the beginning.

The 2000 Japanese release Shin Sangoku Musou was titled DYNASTY WARRIORS 2 in the West. The Japanese Shin Sangoku Musou 2 became western DYNASTY WARRIORS 3. That naming difference explains why the western main-series list starts at 2. Koei Tecmo’s history also lists a separate 2004 release called DYNASTY WARRIORS; it is not an extra first step in the western-numbered sequence.

Which Dynasty Warriors game should you start with?
For a current starting point: DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS
Choose ORIGINS if you want the newest release rather than a tour through older installments. Koei Tecmo presents it as a return to the series’ roots. Its Europe catalogue lists the game for PS5, Steam, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Confirm that the edition is available for your platform and region in the relevant store before buying; a catalogue listing does not establish current stock or pricing. See the official ORIGINS page and Koei Tecmo Europe catalogue.
For a legacy alternative: DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition
Consider this older edition if you specifically want to try the DW8 era. Koei Tecmo’s licensing catalogue names the Complete Edition and records a Switch release; its series history confirms the DW8 and Xtreme Legends lineage. Availability and compatible platforms vary, so check the exact edition and platform with a regional retailer. The catalogue record supports it as a legacy option, not as a definitive best game. See Koei Tecmo Europe’s licensing catalogue.
Rank #2
- Battlefield action with over 20 intense stages and 40 playable warriors
- Brand new 2-Player versus and cooperative modes!
- Even more bone-crushing moves and improved MUSOU Attacks!
- First in the series - massive elephant troops!
- Plus 7 untold stories!
For a release-order completionist
Start with western DYNASTY WARRIORS 2, then follow the table through DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 and ORIGINS. This is the clearest way to trace the franchise’s release history. You do not need to play every version or branch to understand that sequence.
Are Xtreme Legends and Empires required?
No. Koei Tecmo’s timeline lists Xtreme Legends and Empires releases alongside the numbered games, but they are separate branches rather than additional numbered installments. Treat a particular version as an optional stop if its release or direction interests you; there is no need to complete every branch before moving to another main entry. The official history establishes their release categories, but does not provide a detailed feature comparison that would support stronger claims about how they play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which entries are worth playing?
There is no evidence here for an authoritative best-to-worst ranking or review consensus, so “worth playing” depends on what you want from the series and what you can play. These are practical entry-point recommendations based on release position and publisher descriptions, not a quality verdict.
- Want the current release: try DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS.
- Want an older entry with a named Complete Edition: look for DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition if it is available for your platform.
- Want the franchise’s historical progression: follow the western-numbered order, starting with DYNASTY WARRIORS 2.
- Interested in a branch rather than another main entry: explore Empires or Xtreme Legends on its own terms; the official chronology does not make either one a required continuation.
Koei Tecmo describes the broader Warriors-series appeal as “the thrill of 1 vs. 1,000.” The company’s corporate page reports more than 42 million copies worldwide for the broader Musou/Warriors series, not for Dynasty Warriors alone. Neither statement is a comparative ranking of these entries. See the KOEI TECMO HOLDINGS Entertainment page.
