Dynamic cruise control usually means adaptive cruise control (ACC): it maintains a driver-set speed and can adjust that speed to help keep a selected distance from traffic ahead. It is a driver-assistance feature, not self-driving; the driver must continue watching the road and be ready to brake or take control.
What dynamic cruise control does
Regular cruise control holds the speed you set. Dynamic cruise control adds forward sensing: it detects a vehicle ahead and can slow your car to help maintain a chosen following gap. When the lane ahead is clear, it can accelerate back toward your set speed. Transport Canada describes this basic operation in its adaptive cruise control guidance.
Depending on the vehicle, sensing may use radar, a camera, or both. The system can manage acceleration and may apply braking, but its sensors, controls, and braking capability differ by model. For example, Renault’s Clio manual describes a system using radar or camera information to control acceleration and deceleration through the engine and braking system; those details apply to the specified Clio version, not all vehicles. See the Renault Clio manual.

Is dynamic cruise control the same as adaptive cruise control?
Usually, yes: “dynamic cruise control” is commonly used to describe adaptive cruise functionality. Automakers use different names, including active cruise control, intelligent cruise control, radar cruise control, and traffic-aware cruise control. A badge or menu label can have a manufacturer-specific meaning, so check the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s exact feature and controls.

Can it stop and go in traffic?
Some systems can brake the vehicle to a full stop in stop-and-go traffic and resume when traffic moves. That ability is not universal, and the operating range and conditions vary by vehicle. Do not assume a system will stop, remain stopped, or resume automatically unless your owner’s manual says it can and explains how to use it.
What are its limits, and what must the driver do?
Adaptive cruise control is assistance, not a substitute for attention or control. Transport Canada warns that the driver may need to brake when the vehicle ahead brakes sharply or another vehicle cuts in, and that the system may not respond to stopped vehicles. Its Canadian guidance recommends using ACC on highways rather than urban roads. As Transport Canada puts it: “These systems are designed to help you drive. They don’t replace your attention and judgement”.

System performance can also be affected when its radar or camera is obstructed. Renault’s manual for the documented Clio version warns that braking is limited and the system does not trigger an emergency stop; those particular warnings and directions are vehicle-specific. Follow your own manual and local rules, keep monitoring traffic, and be prepared to brake or take over whenever needed.
