Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) places selected advertisements into a live stream at designated breaks. The program marks an ad opportunity, an ad decision system chooses creatives, and an insertion service or player coordinates how the ad media joins playback. The architecture determines which work is handled by hosted services, a manifest manipulator, and the player.

How a live ad becomes a viewer’s ad

A live DAI workflow connects the program feed, break signaling, ad decisioning, stream or manifest handling, playback, and measurement. The exact division of responsibilities depends on the implementation.

  1. Prepare the live stream. The encoder or origin produces a supported HLS or DASH stream. Ad breaks need to be signaled in the stream or manifest so the system can identify their start and duration. AWS MediaTailor’s live HLS setup documents markers including #EXT-X-CUE-OUT/#EXT-X-CUE-IN and #EXT-X-DATERANGE, and requires markers for that workflow: AWS HLS ad markers.
  2. Register a stream or session. In Google’s live pod-serving workflow, the player registers the stream and receives a unique session identifier. That identifier helps coordinate the player’s requests and the ad-serving workflow: Google live pod serving.
  3. Signal the break. When the program reaches an ad opportunity, the marker communicates that an avail has begun and, where applicable, its duration. Google’s server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) can use manifest markers; for its optional Early Ad Break Notification API, Google recommends sending notice about one minute or more before a scheduled break so the system can prepare. This is Google-specific guidance, not a universal timing requirement: Google SGAI documentation.
  4. Select advertisements. The ad decision server evaluates the request and available targeting parameters, then returns ad creative references. AWS describes MediaTailor sending viewer parameters to an ad decision server and receiving creative URLs in a VAST or VMAP response: AWS MediaTailor overview.
  5. Assemble the break. Depending on the architecture, a service or a separate manifest manipulator builds an ad pod and integrates its segments or references into the playback path. In full-service DAI, the service can return a stream with breaks inserted; in pod serving, a separate component handles manifest manipulation; in SGAI, the player coordinates playback using server-provided break and ad information: Google Pod Serving API.
  6. Play and measure. The player follows the content and ad media, responds to break metadata, and sends measurement events. Google documents media verification pings for live pod serving; AWS documents client-side impression and quartile beacons. An ad appearing in a manifest is not, by itself, proof that a viewer completed it: AWS MediaTailor tracking.

How the main insertion architectures differ

These are vendor-specific workflows, not interchangeable product labels. Confirm the current supported protocols, player requirements, and device coverage for the service you plan to use.

Approach Who handles insertion What the workflow means What to evaluate
Full-service DAI / SSAI A hosted DAI service selects and stitches the ad pod into the stream. The service returns a stream with ad breaks inserted; the player uses the service’s SDK or supported workflow. Service boundary, player and platform support, stream format, configuration control, and tracking needs. Google full-service DAI
Pod-serving SSAI The ad service supplies ad pods; a separate manifest manipulator stitches or embeds ad references. The publisher retains a stream-manipulation component and coordinates sessions, manifests, and verification. Manifest ownership, engineering and operations workload, HLS/DASH details, and player integration. Google Pod Serving API
Server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) The server supplies break and ad information; the client player coordinates playback. The player uses break metadata and ad pods to manage the transition between program and ads. Google documents EABN as an optional advance-preparation mechanism. Player responsibilities, manifest signaling, platform support, transitions, and measurement. Google SGAI documentation
AWS MediaTailor workflow MediaTailor mediates between the player/CDN, content origin, and ad decision server. The service returns a personalized HLS or DASH manifest using viewer parameters and the ad decision. Marker compatibility, origin and CDN configuration, ad decision integration, and tracking mode. AWS MediaTailor overview

Why break markers and duration matter

Markers tell the insertion workflow when an avail starts and ends. Their format and behavior vary by protocol and service, so an encoder, origin, ad service, and player must agree on how they are represented.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • In AWS’s documented live MediaTailor behavior, live ad replacement uses break markers and aims to preserve the total interval between them. A live CUE-OUT needs a duration or a matching CUE-IN: AWS MediaTailor ad behavior.
  • Break duration affects pod selection and what happens when the available ad pod is shorter than the scheduled avail. Google’s pod-serving documentation notes that Ad Manager may insert slate for the remainder in that case: Google Pod Serving API.
  • Test marker timing, matching start/end signals, duration handling, slate or fallback behavior, and ad-pod length using the exact live workflow you intend to deploy.

Insertion is separate from verified viewing

DAI has at least two distinct outcomes to validate: whether ad media was integrated into the stream and whether playback generated the expected measurement events. Google’s live pod-serving workflow documents media verification pings. AWS’s client-side tracking documentation describes impression and quartile events—start, first quartile, midpoint, third quartile, and complete: AWS MediaTailor tracking.

Validate tracking in the target player and device matrix. Do not treat an ad reference in a manifest, or an insertion event alone, as evidence that a viewer watched the ad through completion.

Implementation checks before launch

  • Confirm stream and player compatibility. Check the service’s current HLS or DASH support and the specific player, platform, and device versions you will serve.
  • Verify signaling end to end. Confirm that the origin emits the expected break markers, that durations and closing markers agree, and that the insertion service interprets them as intended.
  • Exercise ad decisions and fallback. Test successful ad responses, short pods, unavailable creatives, slate behavior, and transitions back to the live program.
  • Check session coordination. Ensure the player, ad service, and manifest workflow use the session or stream identifiers required by the chosen architecture.
  • Validate measurement independently. Check the expected verification, impression, and quartile events in playback rather than inferring them from the manifest.
  • Test the actual delivery path. Exercise origin, CDN, insertion service, player, and representative devices together; a workflow documented for one vendor or configuration does not establish support for every implementation.

What DAI does not guarantee

DAI describes an insertion method, not a universal performance or business result. The vendor implementation guides cited here do not establish a general latency reduction, buffering improvement, revenue uplift, fill rate, or audience scale across providers. Results depend on the particular service, stream, ad decisioning, player integration, and delivery configuration.
