One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchNeither a dual-PC setup nor cloud encoding is always cheaper. If you already own a suitable second computer, using it may cost less in ongoing cash outlay; buying one adds upfront costs, while a cloud PC can avoid that purchase but may bill for compute time, storage, or a monthly plan. Compare the same workload and broadcast workflow before deciding.
What You’re Comparing
In a traditional dual-PC setup, one computer runs the game and another runs streaming software and encodes the video. A capture card is a common way to route video and audio to the streaming PC. Intel describes the arrangement as a way to distribute workload between the two systems.
“Cloud encoding” can refer to different services: a rented cloud PC where you run streaming software, a monthly cloud PC plan, or a managed live-video service that encodes and distributes a broadcast. These are not interchangeable products, and their prices cover different things.
Cost Comparison
| Cost factor | Dual-PC setup | Cloud PC or encoding service |
|---|---|---|
| Initial outlay | May be low if you already have a suitable spare PC; buying or upgrading a PC and capture device raises the cost. | Can avoid buying a second local computer, but check the service’s billing model and plan limits. |
| Recurring charges | Electricity, maintenance, and eventual replacement or upgrades. Estimate these for your own equipment and usage. | May include hourly compute, a monthly subscription, storage, or other charges. Some storage fees can continue while a machine is stopped. |
| Usage pattern | Can be attractive if suitable hardware is already owned and used regularly. | Hourly billing may suit occasional sessions; a monthly plan may be more predictable, subject to included hours and restrictions. |
| Workflow | Local control and a common capture-card workflow; requires suitable hardware and network capacity. | Requires a supported remote-computer or broadcast workflow and a network connection with acceptable latency and bandwidth. |
These are comparison factors, not a tested total-cost result. The research does not establish current comparable retail prices for a local PC and capture card, or a universal break-even point.

How to Calculate Your Break-Even
- Define the workload. Note your broadcast hours per month, resolution and frame-rate target, encoding setup, and expected storage.
- Calculate local costs. Include only equipment you need to buy or upgrade, plus your estimated electricity and maintenance. For a cash-outlay comparison, treat equipment you already own as sunk; you can show depreciation separately if useful.
- Calculate cloud costs. Multiply active hours by the current compute rate, then add storage, subscriptions, and any charges that continue outside sessions. Check whether stopping the machine stops compute billing but leaves storage billing.
- Compare the same service and period. Use the same output and workload for both options, and compare totals over a period such as 12 months.
- Check workflow constraints. Confirm that the cloud service supports your intended streaming software and broadcast workflow, and that its latency and network requirements work for you.
Use your own electricity rate and measured system draw rather than relying on a generic power estimate. Run the comparison at several usage levels: a result for occasional sessions may differ from one for frequent or continuous use.
Cloud Pricing Examples—and Their Limits
Cloud billing varies by product. AirGPU lists starting machine rates of $0.65 per hour for Tesla T4, $0.90 for L4, $1.05 for A10G, and $1.20 for L40S. These are machine rates, not complete bills: AirGPU’s billing documentation describes storage charges separately. Check the current rates and billing terms before calculating your own total.

Shadow’s US offers page lists monthly cloud-PC plans, with limits on some offers. Those plans should not be assumed to be dedicated broadcast-encoding plans; check their current terms and whether the workflow you need is supported.
Managed event-streaming infrastructure is a different category. Amazon Web Services gives scenario-specific examples: approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers, and approximately $1,505.60 for a one-hour 1080p event with about 10,000 viewers, under its stated US East (N. Virginia) assumptions. These examples include encoding, packaging, and distribution estimates; they are not prices for renting a personal cloud PC to run streaming software. AWS notes that estimates depend on assumptions and may be higher than actual costs.

Which Option Fits Your Use?
A dual-PC setup may fit when
- You already own a suitable second PC and want to avoid adding a recurring cloud bill.
- You need local control over a live workflow involving game capture, cameras, overlays, or scene changes.
- Your equipment, network, and latency requirements make a local setup practical.
A cloud PC may fit when
- You do not want to purchase another local computer.
- Your use is occasional enough that an hourly plan may compare favorably with buying equipment, after storage and other fees are included.
- The service supports your intended streaming software and has acceptable latency, bandwidth, availability, and plan limits.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner or a fixed number of monthly hours at which one option becomes cheaper. The answer depends on existing equipment, actual usage, the cloud product’s billing rules, and the work you need it to do.

Is a second streaming PC cheaper than using a cloud PC?
It can be, especially if you already own a suitable second computer and use it regularly. If you need to buy equipment, compare that outlay and ongoing costs against the cloud service’s compute, storage, and subscription charges for your actual usage.

Does a stopped cloud PC stop all charges?
Not necessarily. AirGPU describes storage charges that continue daily while a machine is stopped, while Paperspace says compute charges for a powered-off GPU machine stop. Check the billing rules for the particular service and include any continuing charges in your estimate.
Are AWS live-streaming estimates the cost of a personal cloud encoding PC?
No. AWS’s examples cover managed live-video scenarios with encoding, packaging, and viewer distribution under specified assumptions. They are not equivalent to renting a cloud PC to run a creator’s streaming software.
