Neither dual monitors nor an ultrawide is best for every setup. Choose dual monitors if you want two independent panels you can position or orient separately. Choose an ultrawide if you prefer one continuous, wide workspace and your computer and apps support its resolution and aspect ratio. Before buying, check your desk, display connections, and the way you use windows.
What is the practical difference?
Dual monitors give you two physically separate displays. You can place them side by side or stack them, and—if the displays and mounts allow it—use different sizes or orientations. An ultrawide puts a broad workspace on one panel, so windows can sit side by side without a bezel between them.
These categories can overlap: you can use an ultrawide as your main display and add a second monitor. The best comparison is not simply one screen versus two; it is the actual workspace, resolution, and flexibility each arrangement gives you.

Compare the workspace, not just the screen count
As examples of common formats, LG lists a 34-inch, 21:9 ultrawide at 3440 × 1440 and 27-inch, 16:9 displays at 2560 × 1440. These are examples, not a guarantee that every model uses those specifications or that the configurations provide equal display area. Check the exact dimensions and resolution of the displays you are considering. LG’s comparison of ultrawide and dual monitors also notes that ultrawides can require more graphics processing at higher resolutions, and that some programs or content may not handle 21:9 well.
#1 Best Overall
- DO MORE ON ONE SCREEN: See every detail on the wider display featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio; Ultra WQHD provides the simplest way to maximize screen real estate and experience truly seamless multitasking on just one screen.Brightness (Typical) : 300 cd/㎡. Static Contrast Ratio 3000:1.
- ENJOY A BILLION COLORS W/ INCREDIBLE DEPTH: With HDR10 that displays over 1 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for typical SDR technology, dark colors are darker and the brightest are even brighter; Content is experienced as the creator intended
- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
When dual monitors are the better fit
- You want two distinct physical work areas, or want to keep one screen dedicated to a particular app.
- You value independent placement, such as stacking displays, mixing sizes, or rotating one screen for portrait use.
- Your work and media are mostly designed for conventional 16:9 displays.
- You want the option to move, replace, or upgrade one display without changing the other.
The trade-off is physical: two panels need room for their widths, stands or a mount, and additional cabling. Consider whether the desk has enough usable width and depth, and whether differences in resolution or color between the panels would bother you.
When an ultrawide is the better fit
- You want a broad, uninterrupted surface for arranging several windows side by side.
- Your work benefits from extra horizontal room, such as a wide spreadsheet or editing timeline.
- You prefer one main panel and fewer physical boundaries in the middle of the workspace.
- Your desk can accommodate the monitor’s actual width and curve, if it has one.
Before choosing an ultrawide, verify that the software, games, and video you care about display correctly at its aspect ratio. Also confirm that your computer can drive the selected model at its native resolution and desired refresh rate; support depends on the specific computer, connection, and display. LG’s format comparison describes the trade-offs, while its work-from-home setup guide shows examples including an ultrawide paired with a second display. Those examples illustrate possible arrangements, not a universally best setup.

Check computer and connection limits before buying
A computer’s graphics adapter can limit how many independent displays it supports. Check the computer’s specifications and the exact display limits of its ports, dock, or adapter. Microsoft explains that a basic splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create separate extended desktops. Some computers may need a compatible dock or USB video adapter to add displays. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance and Samsung’s multi-display setup guidance for connection considerations.
Do not assume that a port’s shape tells you its full display capability. Check the computer and dock documentation for the number of independent screens, supported resolution, and refresh rate available through the connection you intend to use.

Set up the displays for clear, useful work
- Connect the displays to supported ports or a compatible dock or adapter. A simple splitter will mirror the signal rather than extend the desktop, according to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
- In Windows, choose the display mode. Open Settings > System > Display and select Extend for separate work areas or Duplicate to show the same content on each screen. With extended displays, Microsoft says you can move items between screens. Use the display arrangement controls to match the on-screen layout to the physical positions. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor setup instructions.
- Use the recommended resolution. Microsoft notes that a lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp or produce an image that appears small, centered, bordered, or stretched. Check Microsoft’s resolution and layout guidance.
- Set orientation only when the display can rotate. Windows provides orientation settings, but portrait mode also requires a panel and stand or mount that can physically rotate. The same Windows display guidance covers layout and orientation settings.
Does either setup improve productivity?
There is no universal productivity winner established by the evidence cited here. A 2021 preprint, “Use and Perceptions of Multi-Monitor Workstations: A Natural Experiment”, surveyed software developers. In that study, 19% of respondents said they had added a monitor to their home setup in response to COVID-19. Respondents perceived multiple monitors as beneficial and desirable, but the study did not directly compare ultrawides with dual-monitor setups or demonstrate that either causes a productivity gain. Its findings apply to the surveyed developers and their pandemic context, not to every worker or task.
