A dual counter-rotating ring is a ring-network topology with two signal paths that carry traffic in opposite directions. The second path can provide an alternate route after certain failures, but how traffic uses it and how the network recovers depend on the technology.
What does “dual counter-rotating ring” mean?
ISO/IEC 9314-3 terminology defines “counter-rotating” as “an arrangement whereby two signal paths, one in each direction, exist in a ring topology.” It defines an FDDI “dual ring” as a pair of counter-rotating logical rings. ISO/IEC 9314-3 terminology
The definition describes opposed signal directions and logical paths; it does not require two physically separate fiber cables. FDDI is one fiber-optic example, but the topology should not be reduced to that medium.

How can the two directions provide redundancy?
If a link or station fails, a network may preserve communication by redirecting traffic onto an operational route. The existence of a second direction makes an alternate route possible, but recovery requires a protection mechanism; it is not automatic or identical across all dual-ring systems.

IEEE 802.17 draft material describes two ringlets, named ringlet0 and ringlet1, and fault responses that include wrapping the ring or steering traffic away from a fault. Stations may transmit in either direction. These mechanisms illustrate one protocol’s behavior, not a universal rule for every dual counter-rotating ring. IEEE 802.17 working-group draft material
Do both rings carry traffic at the same time?
That depends on the technology and its traffic strategy. A 1992 article abstract describes FDDI as normally using one active ring while keeping the second on standby for reliability. IEEE 802.17 draft material, by contrast, describes path selection across its two ringlets. Neither example establishes how all dual-ring networks operate. 1992 FDDI article abstract

What to check when comparing dual-ring systems
- Physical versus logical paths: Determine whether the description refers to separate physical links, logical rings, or both.
- Traffic use: Check whether one direction is active and the other reserved, whether both carry traffic, or whether the system selects a direction by destination.
- Failure recovery: Identify the specified response to link or station faults, such as wrapping or steering.
- Technology and standard: Tie each behavior to the particular protocol or implementation. The ISO/IEC terminology cited here dates to 1995, and the IEEE material is historical draft text; neither alone establishes current product behavior or standards status.
