DreamHost supports SFTP for website file transfers on port 22. It is a hosting feature, not a separate SFTP product. You can transfer files with a graphical client such as FileZilla; use SSH when you need terminal access to run commands. Whether DreamHost is a good fit depends on the hosting plan’s resource model, WordPress management, and level of server control.
What DreamHost SFTP does—and what it does not do
SFTP encrypts the connection used to transfer files between your computer and your hosted site. DreamHost says website users are configured to use SFTP on port 22. Its support documentation distinguishes SFTP from FTP, which does not encrypt data in transit. DreamHost warns: “An FTP connection (using port #21) is not secure and should never be used.” DreamHost’s FTP overview and website security guidance explain the distinction.
SFTP is for file operations—uploading, downloading, and managing website files through a compatible client. SSH is a separate way to access a server’s command-line shell. You do not need terminal access just to transfer files, but SSH access is necessary for terminal commands. DreamHost notes that shell access must be enabled for the relevant server user, and DreamPress has separate SSH instructions; do not assume every plan follows the same enablement steps. See DreamHost’s FTP/SFTP guidance and SSH overview.
What you need to connect
A client connection needs four details: hostname, username, password, and port 22. DreamHost says the hosting panel provides the site’s credentials after the domain is configured on a hosting plan. Use the values shown for your own site rather than copying an example from elsewhere. DreamPress users should follow its separate instructions. DreamHost explains where to find FTP/SFTP details.

Connect with a graphical SFTP client
- In DreamHost’s panel, open the website’s hosting or user settings and locate its SFTP credentials.
- In a client such as FileZilla or Cyberduck, choose SFTP as the protocol, then enter the hostname, username, password, and port 22.
- Connect and transfer files between your computer and the appropriate site directory. If the connection fails, check that you selected SFTP, copied the credentials exactly, and used port 22.
DreamHost identifies FileZilla and Cyberduck as examples of compatible clients. The exact panel labels and credential workflow can vary by hosting product, so use the plan-specific support instructions if your account is on DreamPress.
When SSH is needed
Choose SSH when you need a terminal to run commands or troubleshoot from the server. It is not required for ordinary uploads and downloads. For DreamHost users, shell access has to be enabled for the applicable server user; follow the relevant plan documentation rather than treating one setup route as universal.

Which DreamHost plan suits your needs?
SFTP availability alone does not distinguish the plans. Consider whether you want shared or protected resources, managed WordPress features, and root access for server configuration. DreamHost’s plan comparison describes the broad differences below; check the live plan details for the specific site count, backups, and access terms before choosing.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Plan type | Management and resources | Root access | May suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Hosting (shared) | Shared server resources; intended as a starting point for many sites. High use by another site on the server can affect performance. | No | Readers who want conventional hosting without server administration and do not require isolated resources. |
| Managed VPS | Protected RAM with DreamHost-managed software and security; DreamHost’s current page lists unlimited SFTP users and SSH access. | No | Readers who want more protected resources but do not want to manage the server stack. |
| VPS | Greater server control; DreamHost promotes root access and SSH/SFTP access. | Yes | Readers who need root-level configuration and can take on more server responsibility. |
| DreamPress | Managed WordPress hosting with WordPress-specific features and separate SSH instructions; plans are configured around a limited site count. | No | Readers who prioritize managed WordPress and whose site needs fit the selected plan’s site and backup allowances. |

| Managed VPS Business | $13.75/month | $31.99/month |
At the time of the 2026 plan-page check, Web Hosting Launch also listed 25 websites, 25 GB NVMe SSD, daily backups, unmetered bandwidth, and free SSL. Those are plan-page details, not a reason to assume every DreamHost plan includes the same allowances.
What SFTP does not secure
Encrypted file transfer protects the connection in transit; it does not by itself secure the website, prevent a compromised password, or fix vulnerable software and overly broad permissions. DreamHost separately recommends a unique web user for each site, appropriate file and directory permissions, SSL, limited developer access, and keeping site applications updated. Apply those controls alongside SFTP rather than treating the protocol as a complete security solution. DreamHost’s security guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is DreamHost a good fit for SFTP hosting?
DreamHost is a reasonable option if you want a managed hosting provider with encrypted website file transfers and can select a plan whose management and control match your needs. SFTP on port 22 covers file transfer; it does not determine whether shared hosting, managed VPS, VPS, or managed WordPress hosting is right for your site. Choose based on resource isolation, WordPress-specific management, and whether you need root access. Readers who only need to move files can use an SFTP client without learning SSH commands.
