Neither DreamHost nor IONOS is the clear winner for every site. On the US plan pages reviewed October 7, 2026, DreamHost emphasizes daily automated backups and offers monthly billing; IONOS lists more NVMe storage on its web-hosting tiers, with a mix of introductory and renewal prices. Choose by comparing the complete cost for your term, the resources and features your site needs, and how you handle backups and WordPress administration—not by the advertised starting price alone.

How do DreamHost and IONOS compare?

Their published plans are different bundles rather than direct equivalents. The prices and features below are from the providers’ US pages reviewed October 7, 2026; confirm the selected term and live checkout total before buying, especially where a promotional price is unusually low.

Provider and listed tier Published price and term Storage and listed features
DreamHost Web Hosting Launch $2.89/month for the first year; auto-renews at $10.99/month after one year. DreamHost says monthly billing is available for web hosting; the listed first-year price is not a monthly-billing quote. 25 GB NVMe SSD storage, unmetered bandwidth, daily automated backups, unlimited free SSL certificates, a free domain for one year on eligible terms, a three-month professional email trial, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. DreamHost plan details
IONOS first listed web-hosting tier $4/month with a one-year term, then $8/month. 100 GB NVMe storage, standard access to server resources, one email address, website malware scanner, custom domain and SSL, and a 30-day money-back guarantee. IONOS plan details
IONOS second listed tier $6/month with a one-year term, then $10/month. 200 GB NVMe storage; resource access, email, malware, CDN, and SSL features vary by tier. See the live plan page for the exact bundle. IONOS plan details
IONOS third listed tier $1/month with a one-year term, then $14/month. 350 GB NVMe storage; resource access, email, malware, CDN, and SSL features vary by tier. See the live plan page for the exact bundle. IONOS plan details
IONOS fourth listed tier $10/month with a one-year term, then $18/month. 500 GB NVMe storage; resource access, email, malware, CDN, and SSL features vary by tier. See the live plan page for the exact bundle. IONOS plan details

The IONOS page lists several tiers at promotional prices that do not rise in sequence: its 350 GB tier is shown at $1/month for the one-year term, then $14/month. That makes it especially important to verify the chosen tier, billing term, renewal amount, and cart total rather than assuming the headline price represents ongoing cost. DreamHost says its plan cards show renewal prices beside promotional prices and that promotional pricing applies to the first term. DreamHost pricing terms

How much does each host cost after the first term?

Calculate the term total, not just the monthly equivalent

For a one-year term, multiply the quoted monthly rate by 12 to estimate the term’s hosting charge, then account for any checkout additions or conditions. The listed DreamHost Launch figures imply $34.68 for the first year at $2.89 per month, followed by $131.88 per year at the $10.99 monthly renewal rate. The listed IONOS one-year tiers imply first-term hosting charges of $48, $72, $12, and $120 respectively, followed by annualized renewal charges of $96, $120, $168, and $216. These arithmetic totals use the monthly rates and one-year terms displayed on the reviewed pages; they are not a guarantee of the final checkout total.

For DreamHost, ask whether monthly billing changes the price and what the current monthly rate is. The reviewed page confirms monthly billing is available but does not establish the rate for that billing option. For IONOS, the cited tier prices are tied to a one-year term. Do not compare the two as if they had the same billing flexibility.

Check what is bundled with the plan

A lower hosting charge may not mean a lower total cost if a required feature is excluded or only temporarily included. DreamHost Launch lists a free domain for one year on eligible terms and a three-month professional email trial. IONOS lists a custom domain and SSL on its first listed tier, plus one email address. Confirm renewal conditions and the exact included features for the plan you select.

Which host’s features fit your site?

Choose DreamHost when backup coverage and billing flexibility matter

DreamHost’s Launch page lists daily automated backups, unmetered bandwidth, and unlimited free SSL certificates, and the provider says monthly billing is available for web hosting. Those features may suit a site owner who values built-in backup frequency or wants a monthly-billing option. But daily backups do not mean long-term archival: DreamHost’s hosting FAQ, updated July 28, 2026, says average website-backup retention is two weeks and database-backup retention is five days, and that long-term backups are not included. Choose an IONOS tier when listed storage is a priority

The reviewed IONOS US page lists 100 GB, 200 GB, 350 GB, and 500 GB NVMe storage across its four web-hosting tiers. Those capacities are larger than the 25 GB listed for DreamHost Launch, but storage alone does not determine how well a site performs. IONOS tiers also vary in resource access and included email, malware, CDN, and SSL features, so check the exact bundle rather than extrapolating from the storage figure. IONOS web-hosting plans

What should WordPress users check?

Compare the work each provider says it handles, the migration path, and the tools available on the specific plan. IONOS’s WordPress page describes server and technical-task management, setup guidance, pre-installed plugins, included support, SSL, and professional email. It also advertises SSH, SFTP, WP-CLI, and PHP versions 8.2–8.4 on the reviewed page; verify availability for the exact plan. IONOS WordPress hosting

DreamHost says WordPress sites can use its free automatic migration tool. For non-WordPress sites, it describes manual migration or moving with Pro Services; additional fees may apply for proprietary builders and Windows Server ASP sites. DreamHost migration information

Also factor in server access if you expect to manage the server directly. DreamHost’s FAQ says root access is unavailable on Shared, Managed VPS, and DreamPress, and that its panel is built in-house. It describes the service as Linux-only. DreamHost hosting plan FAQs

Do the uptime guarantees identify the more reliable host?

No. DreamHost promotes a 100% uptime guarantee, while IONOS states a 99.99% uptime guarantee on its web-hosting page. These are provider claims, not independent measurements of real-world uptime, and they do not establish which service will be more reliable for your site. DreamHost uptime claim; IONOS uptime claim

How to make the choice

  1. Work out the full price. Compare the full first-term charge and renewal rate, and check whether the chosen term changes the price or billing schedule.
  2. Match the resources to your site. Check storage and resource allocation against your current and expected needs; do not treat storage capacity as a performance score.
  3. Decide how you will protect your data. Compare backup frequency and retention with your recovery needs, including whether you need separate long-term backups.
  4. Confirm the included services. Check domain, SSL, email, malware scanning, CDN, and any trial periods on the exact tier.
  5. Review the WordPress workflow and server access. Verify migration support, management tasks, developer tools, and access limitations for the specific plan.
  6. Read the refund terms and verify the checkout. Both pages reviewed list a 30-day money-back guarantee, but confirm the current terms and exclusions before purchase.

The reviewed material does not provide an apples-to-apples independent test of current US plan performance, uptime, or support quality. It therefore does not support a measured speed or support-quality ranking between the providers.
