In Dragon Shelter, follow the active quest, gather the nearby materials it calls for, and learn each system as it unlocks. That linked routine—gathering, farming, cooking, crafting, and repairing—gives you useful direction without requiring a rigid day-by-day route. Exact tasks and prerequisites can vary by build, so use the quest tracker in your current save.
What to do first in Dragon Shelter
- Check the active quest. Read what it asks for before roaming; use its requirements to decide what to collect next.
- Gather nearby resources. Learn how your available tools work and collect materials close to the farm. Official developer announcements describe resource gathering, tool upgrades, building restoration, and unlocking crafting stations as core activities (Dragon Shelter on Steam).
- Take on farming when it becomes available. Plant when you have the necessary tool and a task or other reason to do so. A beginner guide recommends learning the tools, collecting nearby materials, planting once the shovel is available, and following residents’ requests (Dragon Shelter Beginner Guide).
- Follow requests and repair projects. They give purpose to gathering and help move town restoration forward. Treat each newly unlocked task as your next short-term goal rather than trying to repair or craft everything at once.
This is a flexible opening approach, not a guaranteed quest sequence. In her September 25, 2026 account of her first 14 in-game days, PC Gamer’s Lauren Morton described collecting wood to repair a bed on day one, then encountering requests involving berries, a cart repair, and wheat. Those are examples from one player’s run, not universal prerequisites (PC Gamer’s first-season account).
How farming, cooking, and crafting fit together
Think of the game’s systems as a connected loop: gathered materials and ingredients support crops, meals, upgrades, crafting, and repairs; requests help you decide which part of that loop to work on. You do not need to master every station up front. Learn a system when a quest or unlock introduces it, then check the task text for the exact requirement.
Plant crops when the tools and task are ready
Planting is most useful once farming has been introduced and you have the relevant tool and seeds. Morton reported receiving a watering can and wheat seeds during the first two in-game days, and growing wheat and potatoes later that week. Your own timing and available crops may differ; check the current quest tracker rather than relying on that schedule.

Use cooking for requests as well as meals
Cooking involves gathering ingredients, learning recipes from townsfolk, and experimenting, according to the developer’s official advice. Morton described an outdoor kitchen with an oven and cauldron, and reported making berry jam, bread, and potatoes during her early playthrough. Her account also describes cooking as a queued, step-based process and notes recipes used for requests. These are useful examples, not a complete recipe or station-unlock guide (official announcements; PC Gamer).
Let requests guide crafting and repairs
Town requests and restoration projects turn materials into visible progress. Official developer announcements identify upgrades, restored buildings, and newly unlocked crafting stations as part of bringing the world back to life. Gather for the next task first, then pursue extra upgrades or projects if you have time and materials.

How dragons help on the farm
Dragons are both companions and working helpers. Official developer notes say the water dragon can assist after trust is earned, with tasks including watering, digging, seeding, carrying, chopping, repairs, livestock care, and kitchen work. The developer’s announcements also introduce fire and earth dragons; the specific abilities described here concern the water dragon, so do not assume every dragon performs the same jobs.
Morton found it useful to let the dragon finish a queued kitchen step before starting another. That is one player’s operational tip, not an official rule or a universal requirement. If an automated task appears to be in progress, check its status before adding more work.

Check the current build before following detailed instructions
A Dragon Shelter Wiki beginner guide updated September 25, 2026 warns that older video footage may show the pre-release demo rather than the full release. Its guidance is to compare menus and interface details with the installed September 24, 2026 release, and to advance the active quest if a tool or character is not present. Because detailed prerequisites can change between versions, rely on your current quest text for exact steps.
Morton also reported that some controls and interface details were unclear in her early playthrough. In particular, she found seed-season information behind a tips button in the gamepad-oriented interface and some backpack or control details unobvious. This is a dated reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee that every player or control scheme will have the same experience. Check the in-game help and tooltips for your chosen controls.

- Read the active quest before choosing what to gather.
- Use nearby resources and available tools before making a long trip.
- Plant once farming tools and seeds are available, and let current tasks guide what you grow.
- Use recipes, crafting stations, and repairs as they unlock rather than trying to anticipate every later requirement.
- Build trust with dragons to access their assistance, and check queued work when coordinating tasks.
- When a guide’s directions do not match your save, trust the current build’s quest tracker and tooltips.
