DraftKings reported that a November 2022 credential-stuffing attack may have let attackers access some player accounts using login credentials apparently obtained outside DraftKings. The company did not say that its underlying systems were breached. A Maine filing reported by SecurityWeek put the affected notification count at 67,995 people—often rounded to 68,000. The information potentially exposed included contact and account details, but public reports do not establish which fields were accessed for each person.
What happened in the DraftKings incident?
DraftKings’ 2022 Form 10-K says that beginning in November 2022, the company was targeted by “potential” credential-stuffing attacks. It said the credentials appeared to come from a non-DraftKings source and were used to access some player accounts. The U.S. Department of Justice later said the attack occurred on or about November 18, 2022, as part of a criminal scheme. DraftKings’ SEC filing and the DOJ account describe the event from different perspectives.
Credential stuffing is an account-takeover technique: attackers try email addresses or usernames and passwords exposed in other incidents against a different service. Reusing a password makes this tactic more likely to work. DraftKings’ own description is qualified—it characterized the attacks as potential and the credentials’ source as apparent—so it should not be recast as confirmation that DraftKings’ internal systems were breached.
How many people were affected?
SecurityWeek reported that DraftKings’ filing to Maine identified 67,995 individuals. Michigan’s Attorney General separately described the affected group as more than 67,000 customers. The 68,000 figure in the headline is a rounded version of the Maine notification count, not a separate count of accounts or stolen funds. SecurityWeek’s report provides the exact count.

A separate number appears in the DOJ’s November 15, 2023 account of Joseph Garrison’s guilty plea: prosecutors said about 60,000 accounts were accessed and about $600,000 was stolen from about 1,600 accounts. Those are figures for the criminal scheme, not the number of people DraftKings reported for breach notification. The DOJ release covers the prosecution figures.
What information may have been exposed?
Michigan’s Attorney General listed names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, profile photos, and the last four digits of payment cards. SecurityWeek’s summary of the customer notice also included account balances, prior transaction details, and the date of the last password change. Public reports do not give an account-by-account list showing exactly which of these fields were accessed for each affected person. Michigan’s Attorney General said Social Security numbers, driver’s-license information, and financial account numbers did not appear to be affected. SecurityWeek reported that DraftKings said it had no evidence those categories were compromised and that it did not store full card numbers, expiration dates, or CVVs. These are company and state descriptions, not an independently verified guarantee about every account.
Was your DraftKings account hacked?
The public affected-person count does not reveal whether a particular reader’s account was accessed or which details were involved. If DraftKings sent you a notice, use that notice as the account-specific source of information and follow its instructions. If you did not receive one but reused your DraftKings password elsewhere, change that password on every service where it was reused; the credential-stuffing method makes password reuse the relevant risk.

What should DraftKings customers do?
- Change exposed or reused passwords. Create a unique password for DraftKings and update any other account where you used the same password. Avoid recycling small variations of the old password.
- Turn on two-step verification or multifactor authentication. Enable it for DraftKings if offered, and for your email and other important accounts. Michigan’s Attorney General recommends using this extra sign-in protection.
- Review DraftKings account activity. Check profile details, account balance, transactions, and payment activity for changes or activity you do not recognize. Contact DraftKings through its official support channel about suspicious activity.
- Monitor financial accounts and credit reports. Michigan’s Attorney General recommends monitoring bank accounts, credit reports, and card statements. Pay particular attention to unfamiliar transactions or new activity.
- Treat messages about the incident cautiously. Do not follow unexpected links or provide passwords or payment details in response to an unsolicited email or text. Go directly to DraftKings’ official site or app instead.
Michigan’s alert ties its credit-freeze guidance to exposure of Social Security or financial account information, and said those categories did not appear affected in this incident. The reported information therefore does not, by itself, establish that every customer needs a credit freeze or paid credit-monitoring service. A physical FIDO2 security key is one optional way to use multifactor authentication, but Michigan’s guidance recommends MFA generally and does not endorse a particular key or brand.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “Joseph Garrison and his co-conspirators launched an online cyberattack, stealing approximately $600,000 from innocent victims’ accounts. Garrison now stands convicted of a federal crime for targeting the accounts of victims making legitimate online wagers.”
