Install Max from Google Play or your device’s official app store—not from an unofficial “HBO Max APK” site. The service is now called Max in its current installation guidance, and an APK alone cannot unlock 4K HDR: playback also depends on your plan, the title, supported hardware, the HDMI connection, and internet quality.
Is HBO Max still the right app name?
Max’s current support instructions refer to the app as Max. The older HBO Max name remains common in searches and may still appear on an older installation, but look for Max in your official app store. Max’s update guidance explains how to move from the former HBO Max app to Max.
How to install Max on Android
Android phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Max.
- Select the official Max app, then tap Download or Install.
- Open Max and sign in or subscribe.
Android TV or Google TV
- Open the Play Store on your TV or streaming device.
- Search for Max and select the app.
- Choose Install, then open Max and sign in.
- If prompted, follow the on-screen code or QR sign-in instructions.
Max’s supported-device and installation guidance lists most Android phones and tablets running Android 5.1 or later, and Android TV devices running Android TV OS 5.1 or later. These thresholds do not guarantee support on every device or in every country. Max says installations from outside the official Google Play store are not supported; it does not provide a standalone APK download link on that support page.

Update or replace an older HBO Max app
Open Google Play, search for Max, and choose Update if available. If the old app cannot update, uninstall it and install Max from Google Play, then sign in with your existing account credentials. On Android TV, Max’s listed update path is: highlight the Max app, press and hold the remote’s Select button, choose View Details, then choose Update.

Why an unofficial APK is a poor 4K shortcut
A third-party APK may be outdated, modified, repackaged, or incompatible with your device. It also lacks Max’s support for installations outside Google Play, and sideloading cannot grant a subscription, change title rights, or make unsupported hardware 4K-capable. A phone app package may also behave poorly on a television, where navigation, DRM, HDCP, or remote-control support can differ. Use the official store build where it is available rather than treating a repository’s upload date or version number as proof that a file is official or current.
What determines whether Max plays in 4K HDR?
The app version controls compatibility and service access; it does not independently enable premium picture quality. Max says quality depends on the title, subscription plan, device, and connection. On a title’s details screen, look for labels such as 4K UHD, HDR10, or Dolby Vision. Playback selects the best quality supported by the title and your setup, so a 4K television can still receive HD if another requirement is missing.

Which Max plan includes 4K in the United States?
The U.S. Max plan page reviewed for this guide lists Premium as the tier with 4K UHD where available. The figures below are U.S.-specific and can change; plan names, prices, and features differ by market and may also vary through billing partners. Check the current U.S. plan details before subscribing.
| U.S. plan | Listed price | Video quality | Simultaneous streams | Downloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic with Ads | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | Full HD 1080p | 2 | Not listed as a plan feature on the cited page |
| Standard | $16.99/month or $169.99/year | Full HD 1080p | 2 | 30 |
| Premium | $20.99/month or $209.99/year | 4K UHD where available | 4 | 100 |
The U.S. page also lists Dolby Atmos on Premium where supported. Download allowances are plan features; they do not establish that downloaded titles play in 4K HDR.

4K HDR setup checklist
Max’s 4K playback guidance gives these requirements and recommendations. The page is localized for Taiwan, so its technical guidance should not be read as a statement about every market’s plan names or catalog.
- A plan that includes 4K in your market.
- A title whose details show the desired 4K or HDR format.
- A compatible 4K display and supported 4K streaming device or TV app.
- At least 25 Mbps high-speed internet; Max recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. These figures are guidance, not a guarantee of resolution.
- HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compatibility across the connected chain, including the TV, player, receiver, adapters, and cables.
Dolby Vision and HDR10 are not interchangeable: your display, playback device, and title must support the same format. A receiver or HDMI switch that lacks the required standards can prevent 4K playback even when the TV and streamer support it.

If Max is missing from your TV’s app store
- Check Max’s supported-device information for your device and country.
- Install available operating-system updates, then restart the TV or streaming device.
- Search the official store for Max, not only HBO Max; check the device’s country or region settings and available storage.
- If the TV remains unsupported, use a supported external streaming player connected by HDMI, or use Chromecast, AirPlay, or HDMI from a compatible device where supported.
Max lists these fallback methods in its device support guidance. Supported devices and app availability can vary by market; an app’s presence does not by itself establish 4K HDR support.
Fix Max when it installs but only plays in HD
- Open the title’s details and confirm it carries a 4K UHD, HDR10, or Dolby Vision label.
- Verify that your plan includes the format in your country.
- Check whether the TV’s HDMI input needs an enhanced or high-bandwidth mode enabled.
- Temporarily connect the player directly to the TV, bypassing an older receiver, switch, adapter, or capture device.
- Try a certified high-speed HDMI cable and confirm every device supports the same HDR format.
- Test the network; Max says it adjusts video quality based on device support and bandwidth.
- Update Max and the device firmware, then restart the app, player, TV, and router.
- Try another title known to carry a 4K or HDR label. If the problem continues, contact Max support with the exact error message or code.
For Android TV, Max also lists Settings → System → About → System update → Check for update as the system-update path. Its Android TV troubleshooting guidance says to test the connection, lists at least 5 Mbps for HD, and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K.
