You usually do not need to download antivirus for Windows 10: Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built in and can provide real-time protection at no extra cost. Check its status in Start → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection before installing anything. But antivirus does not replace Windows security updates: Windows 10 version 22H2 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025, so also check your PC’s upgrade eligibility or Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) options.
Do I need to download antivirus for Windows 10?
For most users, no. Microsoft Defender Antivirus comes with Windows 10, so there is no separate Defender installer you need to find. Microsoft describes Defender as providing real-time protection and automatically downloaded updates. Check the protection status in Windows Security rather than downloading a file presented as a Defender installer from an unverified site. Microsoft: Stay protected with Windows Security.
Check protection status
- Open Start → Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Review the protection status and any prompts shown. Wording may vary by Windows build and configuration.
If another antivirus is active, Windows generally turns Defender off; removing the other product generally turns Defender back on. Check that product’s status and license before installing a second real-time antivirus. Microsoft warns that running multiple anti-malware apps at once can slow or destabilize a system. Is Windows 10 still safe after support ended?
Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but standard support no longer supplies routine security updates and fixes. Microsoft says Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025 for covered editions including Home and Pro, Enterprise and Education, and certain specifically listed long-term servicing editions. Edition lifecycles differ, so check the lifecycle for a particular Enterprise, LTSC or LTSB installation rather than assuming the date applies uniformly. Antivirus can help detect malware, but it does not patch vulnerabilities in Windows components. Keeping applications updated and using protections such as User Account Control and Tamper Protection are sensible security practices, not substitutes for operating-system fixes that standard support no longer provides. Defender updates are not Windows updates
Microsoft’s Defender team says security intelligence updates for built-in Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 continue through October 2028 for customers without Defender for Endpoint. These updates help Defender identify threats; they do not reinstate Windows support or fix vulnerabilities in unsupported parts of the operating system. What should I do now?
Check whether the PC can move to Windows 11
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Update (labels may vary).
- Check whether Windows offers the Windows 11 upgrade for your device. Verify hardware eligibility before planning a transition.
- Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro devices can upgrade to the equivalent Windows 11 edition for free. Microsoft: Windows end of support.
Consider Windows 10 ESU as a time-limited bridge
Microsoft’s consumer ESU page says eligible personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 can enroll using a built-in Settings tool. Organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices are excluded from this consumer offer, and availability can vary by market. The page states that enrolled devices receive updates through October 12, 2027, regardless of enrollment date. Confirm the current eligibility and enrollment choices for your device and location on Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU page.

If you keep using Windows 10 without ESU
Use Defender or one reputable, currently supported antivirus product, keep software updated wherever updates remain available, and avoid untrusted downloads and links. Treat this as risk reduction, not as an equivalent to using an operating system that still receives security fixes.
Should I use another free antivirus or a one-time scanner?
You can choose a third-party antivirus, but verify on the vendor’s official site that it supports your specific Windows 10 version and determine what its free tier actually includes. Check whether it provides ongoing real-time protection, how long the vendor supports it, and whether it conflicts with an existing active product. No product ranking or current competing free-tier comparison is established here, so do not assume a named product is better than Defender without current independent testing.

A one-time scanner is not necessarily a substitute for real-time antivirus. Microsoft’s statement about its Malicious Software Removal Tool says that particular tool lacks real-time protection and uses only a subset of signatures; that limitation should not be generalized to every scanner.
