A dome-switch keyboard uses a flexible dome beneath each key. Pressing a key pushes the dome down until conductive parts meet a circuit layer and register the keystroke; releasing the key lets the dome spring back. The label describes the switching mechanism, though the exact materials and layers vary by design.
How a dome-switch key works
- The key transfers the press. A key cap or overlay passes the downward force to the dome beneath it.
- The dome deflects. As it bends, conductive parts of the switch meet the circuit layer.
- The circuit registers the key. The electrical contact creates the switching event.
- The key resets on release. The dome returns toward its original shape, separating the contact and restoring the key.

What “dome switch” and “membrane” mean
“Dome switch” identifies the actuation mechanism, but it does not always specify every layer beneath the key. In one manufacturer’s terminology, membrane switches may also be described as dome-switch keyboards because a dome beneath the overlay provides tactile actuation. The terms therefore overlap in some product descriptions rather than defining two mutually exclusive categories. Telamco

Rubber-dome and metal-dome designs
Rubber or elastomer domes
A rubber-dome design uses a flexible rubber or elastomer dome for spring action and press feel. Manufacturer descriptions commonly characterize the response as softer or more cushioned, but the feel depends on the complete keyboard design.
Metal domes
A metal-dome design uses a formed metal dome as the tactile switching element. Some designs combine metal domes with membrane layers. Manufacturer descriptions characterize metal domes as crisper than rubber domes; that is a qualitative distinction, not a guarantee about every keyboard. Telamco

What to check when comparing keyboards
- Construction: Check whether the keyboard uses rubber or elastomer domes, metal domes, and what circuit or membrane layers sit beneath them.
- Feel: A softer or crisper response may be a useful description, but tactile feel depends on the whole design—not just the dome material.
- Layout and key support: Dome mechanisms appear in different form factors. Check the specific keyboard’s layout and key design rather than inferring them from the switch label.
- Durability claims: Look for a model-specific specification or test before relying on a cycle-life figure. The cited sources do not establish a reliable, comparable cycle-life statistic.
The construction descriptions do not establish that dome-switch keyboards are universally quieter, cheaper, more accurate, or longer-lasting than mechanical keyboards. Those comparisons require evidence from comparable models and conditions.
