Yes. YouTube Live lists AV1 as a supported video codec for RTMP/RTMPS streams, and YouTube describes both software and hardware encoders as supported encoder types. Its guidance does not restrict AV1 ingest to hardware. Your software must still offer AV1 output and send settings that comply with YouTube’s requirements.
What YouTube’s support means
YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming. Its encoder setup guide recognizes streaming software as well as hardware encoders. Taken together, these official statements mean that a software encoder can send AV1 to YouTube Live; no hardware encoder is required by the published guidance.
This does not guarantee that every application or computer can produce AV1, or that every AV1 configuration will work. Check that your specific encoder and version offer AV1 output, then verify the stream in YouTube’s preview before going live. YouTube says it will automatically detect the encoder settings selected in the Live Control Room, but that detection is not a substitute for checking the preview.
AV1 settings to check before going live
Use YouTube’s settings table for the target resolution and frame rate. Bitrate recommendations differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not assume one bitrate applies to every AV1 stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Video codec | AV1 is listed as supported, alongside H.264 and H.265 (HEVC). |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR. Select the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s settings table. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| HDR | AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited settings guidance. |
| AV1 tile columns at 3840×2160 and above | At least two tile columns. |
How to confirm your software can send AV1
- Open the encoder’s output or streaming settings and confirm that AV1 is available as the video codec. If it is missing, consult that application’s current documentation for whether AV1 is supported by your version and hardware.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS as the transport, then enter the YouTube stream details in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Set the frame rate to no more than 60 fps, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If you are streaming at 3840×2160 or higher, check that the AV1 encoder uses at least two tile columns. If the stream needs HDR, use a codec supported for HDR instead of AV1.
- Start the encoder and inspect the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears and that the detected stream settings match your intent before you start the public broadcast.
If AV1 does not work
- AV1 is unavailable in the software: YouTube’s acceptance of AV1 does not mean every encoder supports it. Check the application’s version and configuration; use another supported codec if AV1 output is not available.
- YouTube does not receive a preview: Check the selected RTMP/RTMPS transport and the stream details entered in the encoder. Confirm the encoder is actively sending and review the Live Control Room status.
- The stream is rejected or unstable: Recheck CBR, the resolution-and-frame-rate-specific bitrate recommendation, the maximum 60 fps rate, and the keyframe interval. At 4K or higher, also verify the AV1 tile-column minimum.
- You need HDR: The cited YouTube settings do not support HDR with AV1. Select a codec that meets YouTube’s HDR requirements instead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel using uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.
