Possibly—but only if your exact Echo model includes the hub your smart device needs. Some Echo models have a built-in Zigbee hub, while many others do not. Check the model and the accessory’s protocol before buying a separate hub.
How to check whether your Echo has a smart home hub
Ask Alexa: “Do you have a smart home hub?” Amazon gives this as a way to check. You can also compare your Echo’s exact model with Amazon’s Zigbee support list. Do not rely on the Echo name alone: hub support varies by model and generation, and Amazon’s list changes.
Amazon’s current Zigbee list includes, among others, Echo (4th Gen), Echo Dot Max (2025 release), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 21, Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release), and Echo Studio (1st Gen and newer, 2025 release). The list also covers compatible eero devices. Amazon says supported devices work with Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0. Check the current list for your model rather than treating this selection as exhaustive.
Check the accessory’s protocol, not just Alexa compatibility
A built-in Zigbee hub helps with compatible Zigbee accessories; it does not make an Echo a universal hub. Look for a Zigbee marking or certification on the accessory and confirm that its maker supports pairing with Alexa. Amazon lists lights, locks, switches, sensors, and plugs as examples of Zigbee device types, but a category match alone does not guarantee that a particular product or model will work.

Matter is a separate route. Amazon’s Matter support list covers many Echo models that are not necessarily on its Zigbee hub list. Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee, and Thread border-router support are distinct capabilities. Check the accessory’s protocol and the exact Echo model’s corresponding support list. Amazon’s Matter device category and cluster documentation also notes that Alexa functionality depends on supported Matter features; being in a broad category does not ensure every function is available.
Pair a Zigbee device with a compatible Echo
- Verify the Echo: Confirm that your exact model appears on Amazon’s current Zigbee support list.
- Verify the accessory: Check for the Zigbee logo or other maker guidance confirming Zigbee support and Alexa compatibility.
- Place it nearby: Amazon recommends putting the device within 30 feet (9 m) of the compatible Echo hub. It says a compatible device may also be placed near another Zigbee device already connected to that hub.
- Enable pairing: Follow the accessory maker’s instructions to put it in pairing mode.
- Discover it: Ask Alexa, “Discover my devices.” Amazon’s Zigbee setup instructions provide these steps.
When you still need a separate hub
If your Echo is not listed as having a built-in Zigbee hub, Amazon says a separate Zigbee hub can connect a Zigbee smart home device. You may also need another hub if the accessory requires capabilities your Echo does not provide, or if its maker does not support direct pairing with Alexa. Verify those requirements with the accessory manufacturer before purchasing.

If the accessory uses Matter rather than Zigbee, check Matter compatibility instead of buying a Zigbee hub by default. A compatible Echo may support the relevant Matter connection, but the exact model, connection type, device features, and Alexa support still matter.

Use this checklist before buying
- Identify the exact Echo model and generation.
- Check Amazon’s current list for the required capability: Zigbee hub, Matter support, or Thread border-router support.
- Confirm the accessory’s protocol and Alexa compatibility with its manufacturer.
- Follow the maker’s pairing directions and Amazon’s distance guidance for Zigbee.
- Buy a separate hub only if the Echo lacks the needed capability or the accessory requires one.
