For most people using a supported Windows 11 PC, no: you do not need to install a separate antivirus just to have antivirus protection. Windows already includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which provides real-time protection. A paid security suite is optional and makes sense when it adds features you actually want, not simply because Windows lacks antivirus. Microsoft’s U.S.-market guidance says, “For many users, this level of protection is plenty.” (Microsoft, January 13, 2026)

Windows Security is the built-in app where you review security settings; Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component within Windows. Windows also includes other protections, including Windows Firewall and Smart App Control.

What does Windows Security protect you from?

Microsoft says built-in Windows 11 protection can help defend against viruses, malware, trojans, malicious downloads, suspicious email attachments, and phishing websites. Defender’s real-time protection checks files and activity as you use the PC, without a separate installation or antivirus subscription. (Microsoft Windows Learning Center; Microsoft Learn)

That does not make antivirus a complete security plan. Microsoft notes that antivirus cannot fully prevent social engineering, newly identified ransomware, or attacks exploiting vulnerabilities before a patch is available. Risky habits, such as installing apps from unverified sources, can also put a device at risk. Keep Windows and apps updated, use strong sign-in security, leave the firewall on, and back up important files.

When might a separate security suite be worthwhile?

Consider another suite if it supplies a particular feature you need beyond basic antivirus. Microsoft gives identity monitoring and a bundled VPN as examples of extras some third-party products offer. Other features may include parental controls or coverage for multiple devices, depending on the product.

Before paying, compare current independent test results for the same product version, test period, and categories—protection, performance, and usability—and check supported devices, recurring cost and renewal terms, notifications, and compatibility. A certificate naming Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) for Windows is dated March 1, 2025, but the available certificate text does not provide comparable scores, so it cannot establish a current ranking against competitors. How to check Defender and run a quick scan

  1. Open the Windows Security app from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Quick scan to check the usual locations for threats. Microsoft’s support instructions are available at Stay protected with Windows Security.

Check that real-time protection is on. Microsoft says files you open or download are not scanned during a period when real-time protection is off, although it normally turns on again automatically. Avoid adding broad exclusions: excluded files and locations are not checked by Defender’s real-time scanning and could expose the device or data. (Microsoft Support; Microsoft threat-control guidance)

What happens if you install another antivirus?

On consumer Windows, Microsoft says Defender Antivirus turns off automatically after another antivirus app is installed and turned on. After installation, open Windows Security and confirm that the security product you intend to use is active; do not try to run two primary real-time antivirus engines simultaneously. Server and centrally managed organizational setups can behave differently and are outside this consumer-PC guidance. (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Defender compatibility guidance)

Does this apply to Windows 10?

The recommendation above is for supported Windows 11 PCs. Windows lifecycle matters: Microsoft’s statement about Defender inclusion in Windows 10 after end of support specifically describes devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates, not every Windows 10 device or support status. Check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and your device’s enrollment rather than assuming Windows 10 receives the same support as Windows 11. (Microsoft Learn)

Microsoft’s January 2026 guidance is written for the U.S. and says feature availability may vary by region. Its recommendation is product guidance, not an independent comparative test.
