Sometimes—but moving to a VPS makes a website faster only when the current hosting is the bottleneck and the VPS has enough resources and is configured well. It will not automatically fix slow code, database queries, missing caching, or delays from external services. Find the source of the slowdown before upgrading.
What a VPS can—and cannot—speed up
A virtual private server gives a site a hosting environment with resources allocated to it, rather than relying on the same shared hosting setup. That can help when the current service is constrained or overloaded. But a VPS is not a speed guarantee: its performance depends on the resources available, the server configuration, the workload, and how well the site is built.
Website response time reflects several services and steps working together. The WordPress Hosting Handbook describes page-load speed as the combined latency of services and the order in which an application processes them. A faster server may reduce one part of that chain while leaving another untouched.
- Hosting constraints: limited or overloaded server resources can slow requests.
- Application work: PHP scripts, plugins, and database queries can take time to produce a page.
- Delivery: large images, uncached files, network distance, and external services can add delays.
- Configuration: PHP runtime, caching, and server software affect how efficiently requests are handled.
OVHcloud says that, on its shared hosting, when its infrastructure is not overloaded and a website is optimized, TTFB does not exceed 800 ms. This is a conditional, provider-specific statement in a guide last updated November 17, 2025—not a universal target, a guarantee, or a VPS-versus-shared-hosting comparison. TTFB means time to first byte: the time before the browser receives the first response data.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does a high TTFB mean you need a VPS?
No. A high TTFB is a clue to investigate, not proof that hosting is the cause. OVHcloud cautions that a slow CMS page may be waiting on PHP, database work, or other internal processing. Heavy or slow queries can raise TTFB even when the hosting plan is not responsible. The provider also identifies overloaded shared infrastructure and requests that take too long or do too much work as possible causes.
OVHcloud characterizes most delays in its support experience as caused by the website rather than shared hosting. That is the provider’s description of its own support experience, not an independent industry-wide statistic. Its practical warning is useful: “A high TTFB does not automatically mean that latency is caused by your shared hosting infrastructure.” Read OVHcloud’s diagnostic guide.

How to diagnose the slowdown before upgrading
- Compare a slow page with a simple independent file. If you can, place or identify a basic static file on the same site and compare its response with the slow page. A quick static-file response alongside a slow dynamic page points toward application work or a dependency, though it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Repeat the check from another device or connection. This helps distinguish a problem limited to one device or network from a problem that follows the site.
- Check for provider incidents. Review your host’s service-status information for an outage or known issue affecting the server.
- Inspect application and database work. Look at scripts, plugins, database queries, and logs for slow or failing work. A page that waits on a slow query or external API will not become fast just because the site moves to a VPS.
- Review PHP and server configuration. Check the PHP version and runtime and whether the current environment is configured appropriately. OVHcloud says its PHP-FPM engine can be “up to 50 times more efficient” than PHP CGI for its tasks when using a recent PHP version and stable runtime. That provider claim concerns task efficiency; it does not mean a website will load 50 times faster.
- Check images, caching, and outgoing requests. Oversized images, missing or ineffective caching, and delays from services the site calls can all add time. Address the specific source rather than treating a hosting change as a general fix.
If the independent file responds quickly but particular pages remain slow, investigate those pages and their dependencies first. If even simple responses are slow, and the provider reports no incident, hosting constraints become a more plausible avenue to investigate.
Can caching or a CDN help more than changing hosts?
Often, caching can reduce repeated work without changing hosting. The WordPress Hosting Handbook explains that caching reuses previously computed results instead of calculating them on every page view. Full-page caching can serve a saved page without invoking PHP or the database for each request; browsers can also reuse static files. See the WordPress Hosting Handbook’s performance guidance.

For WordPress, full-page caching is generally suited to public pages. Pages that depend on a visitor’s identity or current activity—such as carts, checkout, and profile pages—need appropriate cache exclusions. Cache expiry and purge rules also matter so visitors do not receive stale content.
A content delivery network (CDN) can reduce network latency by serving content from an endpoint nearer to a visitor. But a CDN does not automatically make dynamic pages faster: if it does not cache the full page, the edge still has to fetch that page from the origin, and that extra step may increase TTFB. Its value depends on what is cached and how the site’s dynamic pages are handled.

When a VPS is worth considering
Consider a VPS when your checks point to hosting limits, the site remains slow after reasonable application and caching improvements, and your current service no longer meets the site’s needs. OVHcloud likewise suggests considering VPS or dedicated infrastructure if the service remains slow after diagnostic and optimization steps. The available sources do not establish that a VPS is always faster than shared hosting or provide a controlled head-to-head speed comparison.
Before choosing a plan, compare it against your measured workload and audience—not just its advertised processor count or memory.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Resources and I/O: available CPU, memory, storage performance, and capacity for database and file activity.
- Workload: expected concurrent visitors and the amount of work each dynamic request performs.
- Server location: distance from the people who visit your site, which affects network latency.
- Caching and CDN support: whether the setup can serve public content efficiently while correctly handling personalized pages.
- Management: how much server administration, configuration, and maintenance you must handle, and whether managed support is available.
- Measured results: response time for the same site and workload before and after any change, rather than an assumed speed gain.
A VPS can offer more control, but that control also means the operator may need to configure and maintain more of the server environment. If you cannot manage it yourself, account for the support and management included with the service.
What to expect after a move
Measure the same pages under comparable conditions before and after migration. Include both a public page and dynamic pages that reflect the site’s real workload; note how caching behaves and test from locations relevant to your audience. A faster result would show that the migration helped under those conditions, not that every VPS is faster for every site.
If response times do not improve, revisit the slow path: application code, database work, PHP and server configuration, caching, images, external requests, and network distance. A hosting change is one possible remedy, not a substitute for finding the cause.
