Yes, but “NVDIMM support” can mean two different things: adding a virtual NVDIMM to a VM, or using physical persistent-memory modules in an ESXi host. Each has separate compatibility requirements. A guest OS listed for a virtual device does not certify the physical server, and an OEM server compatibility example does not establish support for every ESXi release or configuration.
Virtual NVDIMM and host persistent memory are different
A virtual NVDIMM is a device presented to a virtual machine. The VM’s guest operating system must support that device, and the VM’s ESXi configuration must meet the applicable requirements.
Physical persistent memory (PMem) is host hardware installed in compatible server memory slots. Support depends on the specific server model, processor generation, module population, firmware and ESXi/vSphere build. In the cited OEM examples, the physical modules are Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory. These are separate checks: support for one does not prove support for the other.
Which guest operating systems does Broadcom list for virtual NVDIMM?
Broadcom Article 334927 identifies its environment as VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7 and lists the following guest OS minimums. Treat these as the versions documented by that article, not as a current, complete compatibility list for every ESXi release.

Can a server use physical Intel Optane PMem with ESXi?
Only if the exact server platform and configuration are supported. Broadcom’s compatibility examples are tied to named OEM systems and software versions; they are not a universal certification for all servers with compatible-looking DIMM slots.

Intel Server System S2600WF example
Broadcom’s S2600WF support page lists Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory modules in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB capacities, with one module per memory channel. For that documented system family, it gives these version thresholds:
| Operating mode | Support stated for the S2600WF example |
|---|---|
| App-Direct | vSphere 6.7 U2 plus Express Patch 10 (ESXi670-201906002) or later |
| Memory Mode | vSphere 6.5 U3 or later; also vSphere 6.7 U2 plus Express Patch 10 (ESXi670-201906002) or later. Earlier 6.7 releases are listed as unsupported. |
These thresholds apply to the cited S2600WF configuration, not to other server families. Do not use module capacity or physical fit alone to determine compatibility.

Other OEM examples
Broadcom’s Hitachi example covers specific HA8000V systems, including DL380 Gen10 and DL360 Gen10 configurations with second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors; the page states App-Direct support at vSphere 6.7 U2 plus Express Patch 10 or later. Its HPE example covers listed ProLiant Gen10 systems and Optane PMem 100 series, with version-specific support. These examples reinforce that compatibility is model-, processor-, mode- and release-specific; they do not certify an unlisted server or configuration.
Optane PMem is a legacy enterprise hardware category, and current availability is not established here. Before purchasing or reusing a module, confirm the exact part and population against the server vendor’s documentation and the applicable Broadcom compatibility information.

ESXi 8.0 power-loss warning for a PMem platform setting
Broadcom Article 313812 warns about the platform feature CPU cache Flush to NVDIMM Durability on Power Loss in the context of ESXi 8.0. Broadcom states: “The platform has enabled CPU cache Flush to NVDIMM Durability on Power Loss, but ESXi does not support it. As a result, write persistency loss could occur in the event of a power loss. Please disable this feature in your platform BIOS.”
For an affected platform running ESXi 8.0, follow Broadcom’s instruction to disable the feature in the platform BIOS. The warning is specific to that release and setting; it does not establish that every PMem system or ESXi version has experienced data loss. Confirm platform applicability with the OEM and Broadcom documentation.

CBT can block adding virtual PMem
Broadcom documents a configuration failure when adding PMem/NVDIMM to a VM with Changed Block Tracking (CBT) enabled. Its stated resolution is to disable CBT before adding the device, because CBT is unsupported for virtual PMem/NVDIMM.
CBT is used by backup workflows to track changed virtual-disk blocks. Disabling it can affect how a VM’s backup product performs change tracking, so check that product’s documented handling and plan the backup workflow before changing the VM. Broadcom’s finding does not establish how every backup product behaves.
NUMA placement can affect virtual PMem access
Broadcom notes that default PMem allocation for a VM does not account for NUMA placement. As a result, a VM can be placed on a different NUMA node from its PMem, causing remote memory accesses. The Broadcom guidance documents several advanced controls; use them only with a clear placement and operations plan.
numa.nodeAffinitycan set VM NUMA affinity.- NVDIMM
nodeAffinityis documented as introduced in the cited release notes for ESXi 6.7 EP14 and ESXi 7.0b/P01. - Per-vNUMA affinity is documented for ESXi 7.0 U2 and later.
sched.pmem.prealloc = TRUEpreallocates the full NVDIMM when the VM powers on.
Affinity settings can constrain where a VM or its PMem is placed. Check the host topology and workload needs before applying them; a setting that improves locality in one layout may be unsuitable in another.
What to verify before enabling or buying NVDIMM
Use the checks that match your deployment. For a virtual NVDIMM, validate the guest and VM configuration; for host PMem, validate the hardware and software combination as well.
Quick Recap
- Identify the layer: decide whether you mean a virtual device for a VM or physical PMem installed in an ESXi host.
- Check the exact software build: verify the ESXi/vSphere release and patch level, rather than relying on a broad version-family label.
- For physical PMem, confirm the platform: check the precise server model, CPU generation, BIOS/firmware and supported module population against current OEM and Broadcom information.
- Confirm the operating mode: where the platform supports both, verify the separate App-Direct or Memory Mode requirements.
- For a virtual device, confirm the guest OS: use documentation for the ESXi release you will run; the ESXi 6.7 list above is not a guarantee for later releases.
- Review VM dependencies: account for CBT restrictions and the backup product’s behavior before adding virtual PMem.
- Check durability and locality: review applicable BIOS power-loss settings and consider NUMA placement for performance-sensitive workloads.
