Yes. V-Sync can limit the frame rate presented to your display so it lines up with the monitor’s refresh cadence. That can reduce screen tearing, but may also make a game feel less responsive or stutter if it cannot keep pace. Whether it is worth enabling depends on what bothers you more: tearing, uneven motion, or input delay.

What V-Sync changes

A graphics card renders frames, while a monitor refreshes its image at a set cadence. When those are out of step, the display can show parts of more than one frame at once: screen tearing. V-Sync synchronizes frame presentation with the monitor’s refresh rate to reduce that effect. Intel describes V-Sync as synchronizing an application’s frame rate with the monitor refresh rate.

This synchronization can constrain the frames reaching the display. The practical ceiling and motion quality depend on the monitor’s refresh rate, game, graphics driver, and buffering behavior. If the game cannot sustain the display cadence, fixed V-Sync may produce stutter or a lower presentation cadence; NVIDIA discusses this behavior and its Adaptive V-Sync alternative.

V-Sync on versus off

Setting Tearing Frame rate and pacing Input response
V-Sync on Usually reduces tearing by synchronizing presentation with refresh. Can constrain presented FPS to the display cadence; falling behind can cause stutter or a lower cadence. Can add latency; the amount varies by game, driver, display, and buffering.
V-Sync off More likely to show tearing, depending on the setup. Allows the game to render without the V-Sync cadence cap, but does not guarantee a particular FPS or smooth motion. Can be preferable when minimizing delay is the priority, though results vary.

Intel says that with V-Sync off users get “virtually unlimited” FPS, while tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering is more likely depending on configuration. That is a description of the uncapped setting, not a promise that every system will achieve high or stable frame rates. Intel’s V-Sync guidance and NVIDIA’s system-latency guide both make clear that the trade-off is configuration-dependent; neither establishes a universal FPS loss or latency figure.

When to turn V-Sync on or off

Try it on when tearing is distracting

Enable V-Sync if visible tearing bothers you more than a possible reduction in responsiveness or frame rate. It can be a reasonable starting point in slower-paced games, or when performance stays comfortably consistent with the display’s cadence. Check the result in the specific game rather than assuming the setting will feel the same everywhere.

Try it off when responsiveness or uncapped FPS matters most

Turn it off if you prioritize minimum input delay or want the game to render without a V-Sync cap, and you can tolerate the possibility of tearing. This is a preference trade-off, not a guarantee that turning V-Sync off will improve every system’s perceived smoothness.

Revisit the choice if frame rates fluctuate

If fixed V-Sync produces visible stutter when performance falls below the display cadence, look for a game or driver option such as Adaptive V-Sync, a frame-rate limiter, or a supported variable-refresh-rate mode. They are not interchangeable: availability and behavior depend on the graphics card, monitor, driver, and game.

Alternatives and configurations to consider

Adaptive V-Sync

NVIDIA describes Adaptive V-Sync as disabling synchronization when FPS falls below the V-Sync cap, then re-enabling it when performance recovers. The aim is to reduce stutter below the cap while limiting tearing when performance improves. It is an NVIDIA-described feature; check whether it is available in your driver and how it behaves in your game. NVIDIA’s Adaptive V-Sync explanation describes the feature.

Variable refresh rate: FreeSync and G-SYNC

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh rate to follow changing frame rates, rather than relying only on a fixed refresh cadence. AMD says FreeSync synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the graphics card’s frame rate to reduce or eliminate tearing and stuttering. VRR requires compatible hardware, and support or operating range varies by monitor and GPU. Check the compatibility information for your exact combination. AMD’s FreeSync support information explains its approach.

A VRR-capable monitor is an optional hardware route if you want refresh to track changing frame rates; it is not required to use V-Sync. Verify the specific monitor’s VRR range and its compatibility with your graphics card before choosing one.

NVIDIA G-SYNC with a latency-focused setup

For G-SYNC users, NVIDIA’s system-latency guide describes using V-Sync with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency Mode to prevent tearing while keeping latency low. NVIDIA notes this has slightly more latency than uncapped Reflex. This recommendation applies to the described NVIDIA configuration; it is not a universal preset for other GPUs, displays, or games. Read NVIDIA’s configuration guidance.

How to choose for your setup

  1. Start with the symptom. If tearing is the problem, enable V-Sync and see whether the image improves. If responsiveness is the priority and tearing is acceptable, try it off.
  2. Test during actual play. Pay attention to tearing, uneven motion, and how responsive controls feel; a setting’s effect can vary by game and system.
  3. If on causes stutter, check alternatives. Look in the game or graphics-driver settings for Adaptive V-Sync, a frame-rate limiter, or a VRR mode your display supports.
  4. Confirm compatibility before relying on VRR. Check the monitor and graphics card documentation for supported features and, where applicable, the monitor’s VRR range.

No setting wins on every system: compare tearing, frame pacing, responsiveness, and the frame rate your setup can sustain. Vendor documentation describes the technologies and configuration-specific trade-offs, rather than a single best setting for all players.
